It was my last recap of the year, so the Dbacks felt like they had to give me one more extra inning game. At least this one was a win!

The first inning didn't go as smoothly as Robbie Ray wanted, tonight. It started off with three straight singles to Charlie Blackmon, Jose Reyes, and an RBI single to Carlos Gonzalez. They added another run on a Nolan Arenado sac fly put the Rockies up 2-0. Not the greatest start for Ray, but the Dbacks would help him out in the bottom of the inning and cut the lead in half. A. J. Pollock, who was once again batting in the third spot, doubled for the 38th time this season. He was followed by Paul Goldschmidt, who did what he does, and singled him home. 2-1 Rockies.

Ray sat the Rockies down in order in the second, and Christian Bergman responded by doing the same to the Diamondbacks in the bottom of the second. In the third, Ray wasn't fantastic, but he got the job done, for the most part. He gave up another single to Reyes, but picked him off in the next at bat. That was fortunate, because right after the pickoff, CarGo hit a no doubter home run to put Colorado up by two.

The Dbacks would claw back to tie the game. Ender Inciarte got a one out triple in the third, setting up Brandon Drury to bring him home on a groundout, bringing the Dbacks within one. To tie it up, David Peralta got the fourth started by hitting his tenth triple of the year, setting up Jake Lamb's sac fly to tie the game.

After that, the teams just kept trading zeros. The two teams both went down in order once. The Dbacks did it in the fifth, and the Rockies did it in the sixth. They kept trading those zeros until the bottom of the eleventh. Brooks Brown loaded the bases with three walks on thirteen pitches. He was pulled, and Phil Gosselin hit an RBI single to win the game. 4-3 Dbacks.

The roll call tool isn't working for me tonight, so I'm going to skip it. It seems to be stuck somewhere in the sixth inning or so for comment counts. As for Comment of the night, I'm going to give it to everyone who showed up. As I mentioned, this is my last recap of the season. I've had a blast writing about the team and giving myself a reason every week in my hectic schedule to sit down and actually listen to a game, but it wouldn't be nearly as fun if you all weren't in the GDT's and commenting on my recaps. Thanks guys. Of course, thanks also goes to Jim for putting up with me. I haven't been the most punctual or reliable of his writers this season, and yet he still hasn't kicked me out yet. Don't have too much fun during the winter, watching your Non-Baseball sports. If you need me, I'll be staring out the window, waiting for spring...

In a game that a lot of people thought would be a slugfest going into the night, given the offenses on the two teams, it ended up being night dominated by pitching. Despite a Rocky first (see what I did there?) where he gave up two runs, Robbie Ray ended up going six innings and only letting the Rockies get three runs on seven hits, and two walks. Not a great start, but another very serviceable start from the 23 year old lefty.

Meanwhile, Christian Bergman, who looks like a clone of Jeff Samardzija in his MLB.com picture, also pitched an effective game. He only went five innings, but also held the Dbacks to three runs, five hits, and one walk.

In the end, the starters didn't factor in to the decision. The game went to extras, finally being decided in the 11th inning. The Rockies reliever walked the bases loaded on 13 pitches, and then Phil Gosselin won it on an RBI single 4-3 Dbacks.

Say what you like, but I think Ray has actually had a pretty good season. 23-year-olds who can throw 100+ innings with an ERA+ of 116 and a FIP basically in line with his ERA (3.54 vs. 3.53) don't come along very often. In fact, Ray will be only the second pitcher that age in franchise history with 100 IP and an ERA+ of 110 or better, the other being Patrick Corbin in 2013. Even if you broaden your scope out to cover the entire major-leagues, in any given season, you will typically only find a handful of young pitchers who put up comparable numbers. Obviously, there are still issues (pitch count!), but there aren't many names likely ahead of Ray at this point, in terms of 2016 rotation spots.

This will likely be his penultimate start, though that may depend on whether the team opts for a five- or six-man rotation the rest of the way. It's certainly looking likely that the Astros will not have clinched by the time they come to town on Friday, being just half a game ahead of the Angels for the second wild-card, and if their final series, against us at Chase, turns out to be pivotal, one imagines Chip Hale could be less inclined to roll out that staple of rotations at the end of the season, Toby Announced, as the starting pitcher. We'll see how things work out over the next few days, but I'm inclined to suspect Ray will get to start the final game on Sunday.

Somebody who won't be starting any more games, however, is shortstop Nick Ahmed, who appears to be done for the season, due to his hip and lower-back issues. No point pushing it, according to Hale, and that makes sense, even if the MRI showed only bruising. Someone else who won't be taking part tonight - albeit for rather more pleasant reasons - is Brad Ziegler, who is still with his wife and newborn daughter. Oh, and I though this Tweet was kinda interesting...
