Welp

Hey guys, I'm back. I just had a very busy work week that required me to be working every night from last Monday to yesterday, so I've been out of the loop. Let's see how the Diamondbacks did in my absence..

...

Oh wow, really? Okay then. Hopefully the Rockies would be the cure for what ailed the Diamondbacks, cause they usually have been. Except it wasn't tonight. Because reasons.

Robbie Ray and Rockies starter Chad Bettis exchanged zeroes for awhile, leading to a lot of awkward silences at the bar they were at, but Ender Incarte singled home Chris Owings in the 3rd to make it 1-0 Diamondbacks. The very next batter, a fella named A.J. Pollock, hit a two-run shot to make it 3-0.

The Rockies got a run off of Ray in the bottom of that inning, when Jose Reyes singled home Charlie Blackmon, who had tripled the previous at-bat, to make it 3-1. That would be the only run that Ray allowed. Spoilers, I know. David Peralta added on another run in the 5th on a single that scored Paul Goldschmidt to make it 4-1.

For his part, Ray lasted 5 and 2/3 innings, giving up 1 run on 5 hits with 8 Ks and 3 BBs. That'll do fine. Unless it doesn't. Look, I don't know what makes you monsters happy anymore, okay? Randall Delgado came in to get the last out of the 6th and all three outs of the 7th, despite some baserunner related squiffyness.

David Hernandez came on for the 8th, and gave up a leadoff single to Nick Hundley. It could have been much worse the following at bat except A.J. Pollock was like

Your browser does not support iframes.

Hernandez also picked off Hundley (after a replay review) and got out of the inning unscathed. Brad Ziegler came in for the 9th, despite pitching the entire game yesterday (That's what I gathered from the GDT, okay?) It was not great. Daniel Descalso singled, Charlie Blackmon struck out, but Jose Reyes doubled. Nolan Arenado got thiiiiiiis close to a homer, but it was a long single off the top of the fence, but ended up scoring two runs to make it 4-3. After getting Carlos Gonzalez to fly out, a slow roller with an errant throw from Ziggy against D.J. Lemahieu brought it to runners on second and third with two outs. He walked Nick Hundley and that was it for Ziegler.

Pitching Guru Matt Reynolds came into the game to face Ben Paulsen who delievered a walkoff single and well screw this stuff here's the standard bells and whistles I'm going to bed.

After a homestand which made Requiem for a Dream seem like a Disney movie, it's on to Colorado, where out pitchers can look forward to throwing roughly 36 innings in Coors Field over the next three days, before finally getting the blessed relief of an actual off-day on Thursday. Which makes it kinda odd that the team has decided to call up Phil Gosselin for today's contest, instead of using the slot belonging to yesterday's starter for an extra bullpen arm today.. Of course, tomorrow, rosters expand, so it's only a case of getting through today, before reinforcements will arrive, but still...

Gosselin gets no time to acclimatize to the new surroundings, being dropped right in to the starting line-up at second-base today, to become the 20th position player and 47th player overall to be used by the Diamondbacks in their 2015 campaign. For the remainder of the month, I would imagine he will likely take on a role like that of Cliff Pennington, getting some time at various spots in the infield, but I'm not sure how often he is going to start, ahead of Owings, Aaron Hill and Nick Ahmed. With a career OPS+ of 87, I'm not expecting much - but even this would still be considerably better than that trio have managed this year, being at 61. 57 and 71 OPS+ respectively.

Ray has had his struggles of late, whether it's due to fatigue or simply the hitters doing a better kjob of adjusting to Ray, than he has done of adjusting to them. Coors Field is not exactly the best place for a struggling pitcher to recover his groove, and he'll need to do a better job of locating his fastball than he has, because mistake pitches tend to have a habit of turning into souvenirs here. On the other had, after a homestand where we scored only a total of twenty runs over the seven games, an extended series at altitude could be just what the doctor ordered to kick-start the offense.
