Diamondbacks lose because they're smelly and stupid.

Record: 59-87. Pace: 65-97. Change over last year: -14.

Ugh.

Ugggggggggggggggggggggh.

If there's any consolation to the sweep the Giants just put on the D-backs is that it puts them closer to matching LA for the NL West lead. Which is not something I particularly want in a vacuum, but would certainly be amusing when compared to the $900MM team in the City of Angels.

So what happened in the game? Do you really want to know? Fine.

The Giants scored a run in the 1st, and had a 3 run lead before Arizona could even counter with one run in the 6th. Of course, 'Frisco then scored 3 more runs in the bottom of the 6th and it was good night, Gracie.

Jake Lamb got a homer, so that's cool, but that was about for the visiting team.

Jake Peavy only pitched 5 2/3 innings, but he struck out 8 during his brief time on Earth so I guess it was enough. Randall Delgado started for the Diamondbacks, but only managed 4 innings with 3 strikeouts. After that it was all bullpen, but who cares about them? They're like the primadonnas of baseball, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight?

The loss now puts the Diamondbacks on a 6 game losing streak, and tied for last in the NL West with the Rockies. The Diamondbacks remind their fans that depression ice cream will not be provided unless you buy a Super Special Ticket Package that comes with a swift punch to the gut by a pant-less Baxter.

235 comments is more then I would have thought for an afternoon game at the end of this long season, so good job to all the people in the Gameday Thread. Roll call: Angry_Saguaro, AzRattler, Clefo, GuruB, Jim McLennan, JoeCB1991, JoelPre, Makakilo, MrMrrbi, Paulnh, SenSurround, Steven Burt, The Lord Humungus, david.munter, ford.williams.10, onedotfive, preston.salisbury, and shoewizard.

Tomorrow sees the Diamondbacks return home to Chase Field to face the Padres. First pitch is at 6:40pm, so if you can't find something more useful to do with your time, tune in, I guess.

Jake Peavy didn't go deep in the game, but he didn't need to with 5 relievers ready to finish the 3 game sweep.

One would be forgiven thinking this was a Spring Training game with the amount of players that got see action in the mid-September getaway game. 16 Diamondbacks made and appearance to face 17 Giants, though not all at once because that would be ridiculous.

If some on our pitching staff have been putting up their best stretch of the season, the same can't be said for the Diamondbacks offense, which has been mired in a historic slump since the loss of Paul Goldschmidt at the start of August.

The Diamondbacks have played 36 games from the beginning of August. They have scored two runs or fewer in almost half of those, 17 times, and have averaged barely three runs a game, scoring 110 in total. There has been only one lower offensive streak in team history, during the second half of the 2004 season, reaching its worst between August 17 and September 26, when the team scored 107 times. Since August 1, in over 1,300 plate appearances (1,324 to be precise), Arizona is hitting a collective .217/.280/.320, for an OPS that's sitting exactly at .600. John McDonald's career OPS is .595, so we've basically been hitting like him for a month and a half.

There are individual variations, of course. David Peralta continues to hit well, with an OPS of .777 over that time. Inciarte is at .747, with Trumbo and Miguel Montero also semi-respectable. But at the other end of the table? Hoo-boy... Among the everyday players, Didi Gregorius (as noted in this morning's SnakeBytes) is off the charts bad, batting less than a buck fifty with a .445 OPS. Jordan Pacheco is even lower, with a .358 OPS that would rank him third among our starting pitchers over that time, behind both Miley and Collmenter. #Pitcherswhorake - at least, relatively to some position players over the past six weeks..
