Tonight marked the return of A. J. Pollock to the lineup, and the watch was on to see if it would also mark the return of Daniel Hudson from the bullpen and Chris Owings from the bench...

Record: 57-81 On Pace: 67-95 Change on '13/'10: -13/+1

Miley started the night off strong. He did give up a walk to Abraham Almonte and a hit each to Jedd Gyorko and Rene Rivera and , but thanks to a pick off and a double play, only faced one batter over the minimum through the first four innings, with only 39 pitches thrown. Maybe it was just the complete lack of offense that the Padres always give, but Miley was really seemed to be dealing out there early tonight.

In the top halves of the inning, the Diamondback offense wasn't doing quite as well as Miley. Through the first three innings, they only managed two base runners, the first of which was when David Peralta reached on an error in the first inning and was promptly erased on a pick off. The second was a Mark Trumbo single which didn't amount to anything, thanks to in being followed by a fly out, fielder's choice, and a ground out to first.

The fourth inning went better, though, with both Cliff Pennington and David Peralta getting singles to put runners on the corners with now outs. Trumbo struck out, but Miguel Montero hit an RBI single to bring home Pennington. However, thanks to an A. J. Pollock fielder's choice and a Jake Lamb strike out, the inning came to an end without any more scoring.

Which ended up being unfortunante, because the Padres got to Miley a bit in the fifth inning. A single for Rivera and a double for Rymer Liriano put runners on second and third with no outs. Miley did get the next batter, Cameron Maybin, to strike out. However, Alexi Amarista did get an RBI single to tie the game at one.

After that short spurt of scoring, neither team really seemed interested in doing anything else. The Dbacks went down in order in the fifth through eighth innings, and while the Padres did get a solo base runner in both the sixth and seventh innings, neither of them was able to score. One thing of note, Chris Owings did make his return in the eighth has a pinch hitter for Miley, who ended up getting the no-decision. Owings grounded out to short stop.

The Padres tried to put something together in the eighth but they walked away from it. The first two runners got in base, thanks to singles, putting runners on first and third. In a great show of futility, however, the three, four, and five hitters all struck out to end the threat.

In the ninth, Arizona also put together something resembling a threat. Peralta lead things off with a single. Trumbo grounded out, moving him to second. Kevin Quackenbush, the closer for San Diego, intentionally walked Montero, so he could face Pollock and get him to fly out and end the inning.

It all came to a crashing end in the bottom of the ninth when Cory Spangenberg hit a pinch-hit, walk-off home run against Ziegler to put the Padres on top and give them the win.

Couple things of note. Daniel Hudson did not make his return tonight, remaining in the bullpen for the entire contest. Also, I did not hear any of the post game interviews, but shoewizard is saying that Ziegler mentioned his landing knee is not feeling up to par. Hopefully, he is going to get that checked out, and it will be taken care of if there is a real issue. Please don't be an idiot and try to tough this out any further than you already have, Brad...

Good pitching and/or putrid offense was the hallmark of this entire game. It really is hard to tell whether or not the starters were dealing or the opposing offenses were just sucking that badly. Wade Miley ended up going seven innings, only giving up one run, but was only able to get a no decision. A similar story could be told for the Padres starter, Odrisamer Despaigne. He too went seven innings, and only one run, but his team wasn't able to get him the decision either. It all was decided in the ninth when Corey Spangenberg hit a walk-off, one run home run against Brad Zeigler to give the Padres a 2-1 win.

A quick word on our returning wounded warriors. A. J. Pollock started the game, but was pretty quiet going 0-for-4 with two fielder's choices. Chris Owings made a pinch hit appearance that ended in a ground out to short. Daniel Hudson remained in the bullpen once again. Full recap to follow shortly.

It's the waiting that's the hardest part. It's bad enough for us, I can't imagine what it must be like for Daniel Hudson. I would have thought that, after adding him to the roster yesterday, Kirk Gibson would have wanted to get him into a game as soon as possible. If you're sitting on the edge of the high board, looking down at the pool below, the longer you sit there, the greater a drop it seems. But even after Trevor Cahill left the game without retiring a hitter after the fourth inning, we got to see Eury de la Rosa, Oliver Perez and Will Harris. Maybe Gibson was waiting for a lower-leverage situation. In which case, here's to a nice, early blowout this evening.

Two more arrivals for the Diamondbacks this afternoon, with the returns of both Pollock and Chris Owings. The latter is being held out of the line-up on the advice of the training staff, who told Gibson they though a day off for his should was for the best. I'm entirely down with that. Rushing anyone back is an entirely pointless exercise, given where the 2014 Diamondbacks season currently sits. Miley will be glad the calendar has turned to September, after failing to notch a win in August, going 0-3 with a 5.04 ERA. The odd thing is, he didn't actually pitch that badly, with a quality start in four of the five games. But we scored a total of seven runs in support. That'll do it....
