The Buster Posey rule, introduced to limit collisions at the plate, turned around and potentially cost the D-backs this game.

Record: 45-60. Pace: 69-93. Change on 2010/2013: -9/+6.

Rule 7.13: Baseball announced -- effective this year -- that a runner "may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher." Similarly, catchers are not allowed to block the plate unless they are in possession of the ball. If the runner violates the protocol, he's out. If the catcher errs, the runner is safe.

With the game tied at 2 and with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th inning, Ryan Howard walks. Marlon Byrd follows with a towering pop fly that Didi Gregorius manages to drop causing a running Ryan Howard to try for home. Ender Inciarte throws a bullet to Miggy who tags out Ryan Howard 2 feet in front of home plate. According to the Buster Posey rule, the Phillies thought Miggy was blocking the plate and challenged the play.

Upon review, the umpires determined a nailed "dead" Howard, who never touched home, is allowed to score. Evidently, Miggy needs to tag a "dead" runner 15 feet up the first base line. Gibby was not happy (lip reading) and many thought a Reno vs. Albuquerque fight might ensue instead; the D-backs lamely chose to sit on their hands. Ironically, this all happened while Tony LaRussa was accepting his induction to the Hall of Fame.

Nuno was oddly effective today; 6.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K however, the kicker - the D-backs rewarded Nuno with 2 errors which caused 2 unearned runs and an offensive offense. Nuno allowed a first inning 2 run home-run to Ryan Howard but settled in for quality start. Nuno left after another D-backs error by Peralta (later changes to a triple by some friendly home-field scoring) allowed Will Nieves to score with 2 outs in the 6th

Inheriting a runner at 3rd base Matt Stites came in to close out the 7th and effectively got Jimmy Rollins to ground out. Delgado and his distracting Sedona Red socks followed Stites to pitch an impressive 8th by striking out the side. To start the 9th inning, Peralta continued his torrid hitting collecting his second hit of the day. Goldy struck out and then Miggy singled to put the tying runs on base. Prado followed with what Prado does best - hit in to a double play.

Game Over. Buster Posey Wins.

A light Gameday Thread - I think most of Arizona has other things to do on a Sunday morning, or maybe they were watching the HoF induction instead. Paulnh led the way, ahead of JoeCB1991 and GuruB, with the others present being: Alfred E. Neuman, Angry_Saguaro, Hazzard21, James Attwood, Jim McLennan, TucsonPete, Zavada's Moustache, catbat, freeland1787, hotclaws, onedotfive, preston.salisbury and xmet.
It's now off to Cincinnati for three against the Reds. I trust MLB will review the ridiculous scenario which unfolded this afternoon, and make a swift change to a rule whose inadequacies were obviously demonstrated this afternoon.

Well, that was unfortunate. Vidal Nuno pitched well, but two errors and a dubious interpretation of a bad rule proved decisive., as the Phillies took the game and the series.

Vidal Nuño's fondness for the long-ball didn't take long to show up this afternoon. With two outs, he walked Chase Utley and Ryan Howard cranked the next pitch into the bleachers for a 2-0 Phillies lead. Arizona climbed back into the game, however. Nick Ahmed doubled home Gerardo Parra in the second, and Paul Goldschmidt tied this up in the sixth, his sac. fly scoring Ender Inciarte. But it was a play in the bottom of the sixth that got the baseball world buzzing.

With two outs, another Nuño walk put Howard on first. The next batter sent the ball skying high behind shortstop, where Didi Gregorius let it clank off his glove. Howard, came around third and was out by the length of a buffet table. However, on appeal the call was reversed on the ground Miguel Montero was "blocking the plate" - a dubious interpretation of the letter, of the law (Howard could have slid around it, but didn't even bother to try) and woefully far from its intent. The Phillies added on in the seventh, in part on a David Peralta error*, though the throw home beat the runner, but Montero seemed more concerned about not repeating the block, and dropped the ball.

The D-backs rallied in the ninth, getting the tying run on base with one out, but the inevitable Martin Prado GIDP ended the game. We'll need a few cheesesteaks to wash the sour taste of this one away.

* - just changed to a triple. I trust the Coors Field scorer is enjoying his stay in Philadelphia.

The teams came into this series with the same mediocre records, and two games later, we have a fairly good idea of exactly why that has been the case - their pitching. Over the two games, the teams have combined for 30 runs - the split has been mirrored in the scoring, at 15-15. In the 38 total innings of work, the hurlers have allowed 56 hits and 13 walks, with an ERA of 6.87. And considering the starters in this morning's rubber match have a record together of 6-14, I wouldn't be looking for that to be going down by much before the Diamondbacks leave, on their way to Cincinnati.

No Aaron Hill in the line-up today, which isn't a good sign. He may be available off the bench: Jody Jackson says "he was headed to the cage to see how hand feels. He was surprised it was hard to grip bat last night." This sounds disturbingly like what happened after the last time Hill was hit on the hand: the severity of the damage was no realized immediately. It was almost a week after being hit - including a couple of pinch-hit appearances - before Hill eventually hit the DL. I trust lessons were learned, and the negative X-rays are genuinely the case here, rather than just casual medical examination, as they apparently were previously.

And if anyone can tell me why I keep writing "Edgar Inciarte" in the line-up, I'd be grateful. Thanks.
