The Diamondbacks' starter pitched well. Addison Reed blew the save. It must be Tuesday.

Record: 38-54 On Pace: 67-95 Change on ‘13: -10

We traded Brandon McCarthy for a former independent league pitcher that most people agreed wasn't going to figure in to the team's plans very long term. Tonight, we got Vidal Nuño: Ace pitcher. And it was glorious. He basically spent seven innings making he sat the side down in order in the third, fifth, and seventh innings. Each 1-2-3 inning had at least one strike out. For his first outing as a Diamondback, Nuño went seven innings (a career high), only three hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts, also a career high. It was the kind of start you always hope for from your starter.

The offense was... less than good, to be honest. Brad Hand shut them down tonight. Any other night, he gets the win. The Dbacks did peg him for one run, however. It came in the fifth. Nuño started the inning off by reaching on an error by Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee. Ender Inciarte moved him to second on a single, and then Nuño was brought home thanks to another single, this time off the bat of Aaron Hill. That was basically everything that the Dbacks managed on the night, as far as offense went. And it wouldn't be enough

After Nuño pitched the first seven, Zielger pitched the eighth and, thanks to his trademarked double play, only faced three batters. It looked like, as flimsy as it was, the one run lead was going to hold up. Then Addison Reed came into pitch. It didn't start off well. He walked the first batter he faced. Something, something, lead off walks. Then, somehow, he managed to strike out Giancarlo Stanton, and McGehee lined out to center. Two outs. He got to two strikes on Marcell Ozuna, and then gave up a home run to center field. 2-1 Marlins. The Dbacks went quietly into the night after a 1-2-3 ninth.

No television tomorrow for the 12:40 start time. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go watch Torchwood, a television show with strong horror notes that still will not replicate the feelings of horror I get when Addison Reed is brought into the ball game.

Videl Nuño was great tonight. He didn't pitch anything at all like the former independent league pitcher that we were promised. Instead, he pitched like... an ace. I'll admit, and I don't think I'm alone in this, I wasn't expecting much out of this game. Nuño showed me up tonight. He went seven innings, no runs, only three hits, no walks, and set career highs in both innings pitched and strikeouts.

Normally, I focus almost exclusively on the Dbacks during the quick recaps, but I've got to give credit to Brad Hand, the Marlins starter. He also pitched well tonight, giving up only one run, scattering eight hits, two walks, and a couple of strikeouts over six and a third innings. Any other night, he probably gets the win, but Nuño just straight up out-pitched him. I'll take words I wouldn't type tonight for $1000, Alex.

The Diamondbacks went into the ninth with a one run lead. Addison Reed came into pitch. He gave up a lead off walk, struck out Giancarlo Stanton, and then gave up a home run Marcell Ozuna. This is my shocked face. 2-1 Marlins, and that would be our final score. Full recap to follow

So, I DVR's the World Cup semi-final this afternoon, but was a bit short of time when I came back to the house, and figured I'd fast-forward through the first half, reckoning it'd be a close game and likely go to extra-time or penalties. At the very least, the score at half-time wouldn't be a decisive blowout. I mean, it's not as if one side was going to be 5-0 up inside thirty minutes or anything... Damn. Kinda shot myself in the foot there, didn't I? Wasn't a great deal of excitement left, watching the second half after that. Let's hope this evening's game does not result in such a blowout of the home side.

What? Tuffy is hitting sixth? He'll need oxygen to cope with being so high in the batting order. It's a first in his career, but perhaps indicates less a great deal of confidence in his offensive ability, than a lack of that in the prowess of Parra against a left-handed pitcher ad Ahmed in general. Of course, it's the southpaw on the mound which explains why Gosewisch is starting again: it's his second game in three days, which is unheard of this season as well. In the 89 games prior to Sunday, he had precisely 12 starts, so was getting out there about once every eight or nine days on average.

But of most interest tonight with be the Diamondbacks debut of Mr. Alt+164, Vidal Nuño [man, I haven't had to use that since the days of Tony Peña]. I think it's safe to say that expectation in general for Nuño are modest. Still, we've seen generally adequate performances from our other replacement starters like Chase Anderson and Mike Bolsinger, so if we can get the same from Nuño, we'll be satisfied with that. How the bar has been lowered on the 2014 Diamondbacks. We were supposed to be competing in this division, now we're hoping we might get "generally adequate" out of a guy plucked from indie ball...
