It's safe to say it's decision time for the Diamondbacks in regards to Brandon McCarthy after yet another poor pitching performance that resulted in a loss at home.

It was just your typical Brandon McCarthy 2014 outing, well kind of. The D-backs right hander normally cruises through the first two innings and finds trouble a little later on, but that wasn't the case tonight. McCarthy recorded the first out just fine, and then the game erupted in his face from that point. He's now 1-10 on the year, and with the loss the D-backs are 14 games back of first place, so it wouldn't be surprising to see yet another roster move.

Hunter Pence got the "snowball" rolling with a base hit up the middle, and both Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval followed that up with singles of their own, the latter scoring Pence. Tyler Colvin then poked a single through the hole between short and third to score two more. And just like that, Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong had a three-run cushion to work with before he even took the mound.

After a quiet bottom of the first for the D-backs, the Giants were able to add another in the top of the second on another RBI single off the bat of Sandoval; this time coming on a two-out rally.

But it was just a matter of time for Arizona to pounce on Vogelsong, considering the track record of some of the guys in the lineup, one being Aaron Hill. Hill continued his dominance of the veteran Giants pitcher with a double to right to start off the bottom of the second. Miguel Montero then promptly doubled down the left field line to score Hill and two batters later, David Peralta hit a double of his own to cut the deficit down to just two runs.

McCarthy had his only 1-2-3 inning in the third, and struggled to keep the Giants scoreless in the fourth, something he couldn't do in the fifth. Brandon Crawford started the inning off with a triple to the left center gap and was pushed across with a quality groundout from Tyler Colvin for his third RBI on the night, extending the lead to three.

The Arizona offense wouldn't go away quietly, however. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Hill drove the ball away from the semi-shift to the right side and knocked in two with a single to pull the D-backs within one. Though the inning ended on the same play when Hill was caught trying to advance to second on the throw to home.

In the next half, Hunter Pence absolutely killed a ball that went all the way to the second deck in left field off that guy who was included in the Justin Upton deal. Giants up two.

Aaron Hill had another chance with the bases loaded in the seventh against Jean Machi, but he couldn’t get it done this time. In one inning, he delivers runs, the next he pops out in foul territory and the D-backs went away quietly. And it was much of the same in the ninth as Arizona was able to get two runners on for Paul Goldschmidt to be the hero, but he lined out to right to end the game.

Hot like fiya: Hunter Pence (12.3%), Pablo Sandoval (16.0%), Tyler Colvin (12.3%)

Cold, just cold: Brandon McCarthy (-28.3%)

The Giants snapped their six-game losing streak and stay four games ahead of the Dodgers for first place in the NL West. The rubber match of the series tomorrow starts at 1:10 and we'll see Mike Bolsinger up against Madison Bumgarner.

Brandon McCarthy cashed in yet another poor outing, and the D-backs couldn't catch up from the early deficit.

Brandon McCarthy has been by far the worst starter in the Diamondbacks rotation all year, and Saturday night proved to be no different. The Giants jumped out to a three-run lead in the first with a couple of RBI singles off the bats of Pablo Sandoval and Tyler Colvin, forcing McCarthy to throw over 30 pitches and face all nine hitters in the inning. They were able to add to the lead in the second when Sandoval dealt yet another RBI single.

The D-backs were able to push across two runs in the second with three doubles in the inning from Aaron Hill, Miguel Montero and David Peralta.

The score stayed the same until an RBI groundout from Tyler Colvin in the fifth, and although McCarthy was able to get out of the inning, his day was done right there.

Arizona made it interesting in the bottom half of the fifth with a two-run single from Hill to pull within one, but Hunter Pence hit a towering home run to right for the security blanket the Giants bullpen needed to nod the series at one win apiece.

There have actually been longer winless streaks by a Diamondback. Much longer. More than twice as long, in fact. Poor Brian Anderson went almost a year between wins, going 17 starts from July 2001 to the following June. Even future Cy Young winner Max Scherzer had a 13-start streak - and those were the first 13 of his career. You'd have got long odds against him taking 14 starts to record his first W, especially after he threw 4.1 perfect relief innings in his debut. But McCarthy is certainly on pace for one of the worst first-halves in Diamondbacks history - admittedly, as measured by losses, and we'll take the caveats there as read. .

He'll probably get four more starts before the break, but he's already well up the list of most losses by a D-backs pitcher prior to the All-Star Games, and could conceivably top the list, if he loses out the rest of the way. For right now, the eight others to have nine or more first-half losses, all had at least two more bites at the cherry than McCarthy - and all had more wins too. Here's the top 15:

He's also moving up the list for most first-half starts with only one win. Since 1998, his 15 currently have McCarthy tied for 11th, with three players level on 18 starts. Most recently Zack Greinke in 2005, who went 1-11 with a 6.20 ERA. How things change. Again, if McCarthy gets through his next four starts without a W, he'll top the list - the only pitcher in the past century to make 19 first-half starts with one win was Matt Keough for the 1979 Athletics. He went 0-11 on his way to a 2-17 record. Let's hope McCarthy can render all this entirely irrelevant by beating the Giants' this evening, and get his W total a little closer to his RBI one!
