The Diamondbacks offense was rendered ineffectual and the Barves took the first game of the series

The offensive output of the Arizona Diamondbacks at Coors Field the past three nights was prodigious, and they probably felt good about themselves, but coming back home a vacation hangover ensued against the Atlanta Braves tonight.

It was not apparent at first, as Didi Gregorius hit his second Home Run of the season, and his second leadoff homer of the season. This accounted for half the scoring against Atlanta and Julio Teheran. Uh, spoilers I guess.

Brandon McCarthy has had trouble after the first time through the order in many of his previous starts, but overall was not bad tonight. He allowed 3 Earned runs in 6 and 1/3 with 9 Strikeouts. Two of those three runs came in the 5th, when Jason Heyward hit a ball that was more than a bit outside opposite field with Jordan Schafer on base to make it 2-1 Braves.

David Peralta lead off the bottom of the inning with a ground-rule double. That is nice. However, with Tuffy Gosewisch, Ender Inciarte, and McCarthy coming up, you'd be right to think that he would be stranded. Through 66.6% of those names, it became so. However, McCarthy was able to hit one into the hole between Short and Third and Peralta scored to tie the game at 2-2. This was also McCarthy's first career RBI, so good going, Brandon!

The Braves retook the lead in the 7th when Andrelton Simmons doubled home Heyward from first to make it 3-2. That did it for McCarthy, but Joe Thatcher was able to strike out Freddie Freeman and Randall Delgado got Justin Upton to fly out (WE WON THE TRADE) to limit the damage.

To keep going on the damage theme, the Diamondback offense was unable to cause any more of it, and Trevor Cahill, coming in for the top of the 9th in a one-run game, caused a lot. Heyward and Upton got RBI singles off of him to make the lead 5-2. Gerardo Parra had a nice play in the outfield. So he's got that going for him. Craig Kimbrel did his thing and the D'Backs went meekly into the 9th.

Kimbrel also became the all time Braves leader in saves with this one. La de dah. You want a medal or something? Can't wait for Fredi to not put you in in a playoff game again?

Sorry, I'm bitter.

The Diamondbacks three-game win streak ends and they drop the first game against Atlanta.

Brandon McCarthy allowed 3 runs in 6 and 1/3rd innings, a better pace from previous outings, but the Diamondbacks offense was less up to the task as they dropped the first game of the series against the Braves.

Didi Gregorius has homered in 100% of his leadoff at-bats this season, and that gave the D'Backs a 1-0 lead to start off the game. The Braves struck back in the 5th when Jason Heyward hit a two-run opposite field homer off McCarthy on a pitch that was very much outside.

The Diamondbacks tied the game up when McCarthy was able to get his first career RBI on a seeing-eye single in the bottom of the inning that scored David Peralta to make it 2-2.

Atlanta retook the lead in the 7th when Andrelton Simmons doubled home Heyward from first base to make it 3-2. They added on off Trevor Cahil another run when Heyward singled home Jordan Schafer. Justin Upton then got a cheapie bloop single to make it 5-2.

Craig Kimbrel did his thing in the 9th.

Yeah, it's probably going to continue to be A Story, for as long as Upton is in the majors. So, probably at least another decade or so. Get used it.

Bunch of stories here tonight. The return of Justin Upton, etc. etc. Starting against us is a pitcher whom we supposedly spurned in preference for Randall Delgado. B.J. Upton's late arrival, due to his girilfriend giving birth in Tampa on Thursday [his flight is due in about 5:30pm, so he's not in the Braves' starting line-up]. And Beach Night at Chase Field, with the presence of some special guests, which leads to Tweets such as this:

Got thrown from a mechanical Shark, then met @GenaLeeNolin #NewsLife Beach Night at Chase @Dbacks @azfamily pic.twitter.com/tOB0KpjAkk

And then, of course, there's the ongoing struggles of Brandon McCarthy. Updating some stats from his last start, his ERA through the first three innings is now 2.00; thereafter, it's 8.35. And then, there's this:

So, brace yourself. A loss tonight would keep McCarthy on track with Willie Blair, tied on eight for the most losses by a Diamondbacks pitcher at this point in the season. Blair ended with 15 losses for us in 1998, particularly impressive since he only made 23 starts. Mind you, if the offense performs like they did the past couple of days, that'll help. Arizona tied a franchise record with 28 runs over two games, something they haven't done since the very end of the 2002 season, when they beat the Rockies 17-8 and 11-8, at Bank One. Of course, that was a) in Coors, and b) against Colorado. Teheran and the Braves should present just a slightly tougher challenge.
