After the promising start to the doubleheader earlier in the day, hopes were high, at least on my side of the screen. However, it really wasn't to be. I feel like I've said that a lot this season.

Record: 20-32, On Pace: 62-100, Change on '04/'10/'13: +1/+/-0/-10

After a quiet exchange of zeros in the first inning, the Diamondbacks jumped on top in the second with a two run inning. Aaron Hill lead it off with a single, and was quickly brought home by Martin "I can too hit something other than a single" Prado triple. Prado then scored when Ross hit grounded out to short stop, but did get the RBI. Chris Owings then grounded out to the pitcher, Daisuke Matsuzaka, and Sir Tuffy Gosewisch struck out to end the inning, and the Dbacks offense for the afternoon.

Because, seriously folks, that was it. They completely failed to deliver some final, crushing blow to the Mets, and thus they were left to creep back into the game. And they wasted no time in creeping, either. In the bottom of the same inning, Matsuzaka got an RBI single that scored Wilmer Flores, making the score 2-1.

The lead managed to last until the bottom of the fifth, when Bobby Abreu proved that he really should retire already... and hit an RBI double to tie the game at two. Then we were losing by the end of the sixth inning, after Ruben Tejada pinch hit for Matsuzaka, and he hit a single, scoring Anthony Recker. 3-2 New York.

The Mets added another run in the eighth, but it wasn't really needed. The Dbacks went quietly into the night and back to Arizona with a final score of 4-2.

The Dbacks offense continued its stretch of being offensive in the second half of the double header, only managing six base-runners, two runs, with seven strikeouts. According to Fangdango in the Gameday Thread, we've only been averaging two runs a game since the 18 run outburst against LA. Not exactly a recipe for winning a baseball game, and that was born out in the final score as the Mets beat the Dbacks by a score of 2-4.

One bright spot for the Diamondbacks was their pitching. Zeke Spruill pitched well, only giving up three runs over five and a third innings. After that he was relieved by Trevor Cahill and Joe Thatcher who combined for two and two third inning of one run baseball to continue to keep the team in the game, but it wasn't to be.

Something else of note, Aaron Hill was removed from the game in the seventh inning after fouling a ball off his ankle. Official word is that is was just a precautionary measure, but still kind of scary for the team. Losing a player like Hill would be a big deal eve for a good team. I'd hate to see what it does to a team like the Dbacks who were struggling to begin with. If there is any more news about Hill, you'll be able to find it here, along with the full recap of today's game, which will be following shortly.

The Diamondbackjs go for the sweep on the road in New York, after squeaking out a 2-1 victory in the opener. Zeke Spruill makes his season debut this afternoon.

Who knows, maybe we'll even get a hit with a runner in scoring position this time. But let's not get over-ambitious...

And we roll on to the second game in today's double-header, with Zeke Spruill making his first appearance of the season for Arizona. Can we sweep the Mets in New York, as they swept us in Arizona?

I'll keep this short, since there's a very quick turnaround today. This isn't a day-night double-header, there will be only 30 minutes between the end of the first game and the start of the second, and I'm still waiting for the line-up we'll use in Part TWo. Hard to know what to expect from Spruill; he has only 11.1 innings in the majors, last season, when he put up a 5.56 ERA on 17 hits and five walks. For the Reno Aces, he has pitched both as a starter and out of the bullpen, and has a 4.72 ERA over 34.1 innings this year, in 12 appearances, including five starts. He has won last two starts without allowing a run, over 13.1 innings; he pitched on the 20th in Tacoma, blanking the Rainiers for six innings.

Matsusaka has been a reliever his season for the Mets, so this'll be his first start. Be interesting to see how that works out for him. He did throw 56 pitches in a long relief outing on May 13, but his last appearance was only three days ago, albeit only a nine-pitch outing. I can't see him going tremendously deep into this one. After some shuffling around, ish95 will be bringing you this recap, with Turambar beer-capping Tuesday night instead. And with that, I'm off to the supermarket for supplies!
