Offensive competence, but bad starting pitching. That is the story of the season and it has played out yet again.

I understand that this is a fairly well-respected site in the realm of Diamondbacks internet, and I will soldier on to recap yet another stinker by the 2014 Arizona Diamondbacks, but man it's not easy.

Wade Miley took on Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Franklin Morales in hot Lefty on Lefty matchup. Wade Miley had never received a loss against the Rockies before tonight. This is not subtle foreshadowing.

Miley gave up the first run of the game on a Carlos Gonzalez double-but-thrown-out-trying-to-stretch-it-to-a-triple-but-the-run-still-scored-because-that-is-how-life-works to make it 1-0 Rockies in the first frame.

In the bottom of the second, something magical happened. Gerardo Parra hit a Home Run. You might be thinking, "Hey, he does that occasionally, I mean, it's cool, but not really worthy of that hyperbole' THAT IS WHERE YOU ARE WRONG, FAKE STRAW-PERSON. Franklin Morales is a lefty and....

So, hah.

However, this began an endless spiral of booze, pills, and the Rockies re-taking the lead after the Diamondbacks tied it. The first instance of this would happen in the form of a Troy Tulowitzki RBI double that scored two runs in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, the D'Backs would get those two runs back after a Miguel Montero sac-fly that scored Martin Prado, and an Aaron Hill single that scored Paul Goldschmidt to make it 3-3 square.

How long would the game remained tied? If you guessed "up until the next half-inning", congratulations! Nolan Arenado and Jordan Pacheco would each double off of Miley to make it 4-3 Rockies. The Diamondbacks tied it back up at 4 in the bottom of the fifth on a Goldy RBI groundout that scored Prado.

The sixth was the inning that broke the camel's back for Miley. Tulo lead off with a solo homer to give the Rockies the lead again. This was aggravated by a Arenado single that was followed by another homer from Justin Morneau to make it 7-4.

The D'Backs added on in the seventh on a Miguel Montero single to make it 7-5. The Rockies, being the jerks that they are, added another run in the ninth off of Joe Thatcher. The D'Backs did absolutely nothing in their final two at-bats and ergo they lost.

So you can watch if you want. Me? Well I think I'll just go to bed and- What's that, bottle of bourbon? You're offering me unconditional love that the Diamondbacks aren't? Well, how can I say no?

Another loss.

Wade Miley did not have a good outing. Those happen sometimes, but when he's been consistantly your only good starter, that is inconvenient at best.

Miley gave up an RBI double to Carlos Gonzalez in the first frame (though he was thrown out a third on the play so ha ha?). The Diamondbacks answered back with a Gerardo Parra solo-shot off of Franklin Morales to tie it. The Rockies took the lead back on a Troy Tulowitzki double that scored two in the third. The D'Backs answered back in the bottom of the frame with a Miguel Montero sac-fly and an Aaron Hill single.

The Rockies answered the next half-inning. (You see a pattern here?) on a Jordan Pacheco double to score one to make it 4-3. The Diamondbacks got tied back up in the fifth on a Paul Goldschmidt RBI groundout.

Colorado put in the killing blow in the sixth thanks to a solo homer by Tulo and a two-run shot by Justin Morneau to make it, at the time, 7-4. Each team added another run on various bullpen maleficence, but the Diamondbacks could not do anything in the ninth and lost yet again.

The Diamondbacks starting pitching has been very effective this time around the rotation. But can it stand up to the Rockies' offense, which on first glance, has been equally good? But wait...

Fabian already pointed out the gaudy numbers being put up by the Colorado offense this year. However, as a counter-argument, it's worth mentioning how heavily dependent this is on their park. Away from Coors, the Rockies have a mediocre line of .247/.298/.366, a .664 OPS, which is actually below the NL average (.671), though obviously, they don't get to play road games in Coors, like the rest of the league. Their home OPS is a staggering .984, which is 187 points ahead of the 2nd-placed Marlins - who are closer to the 13th-placed Pirates, than they are to the Rockies. That's largely why Colorado are 8-4 at home, and 6-8 on the road.

The more conspiratorial minded of you could insert a rant about humidors, juiced balls and home-team advantage here. Especially since the Rockies pitching doesn't show anything like the same split, as you'd expect if there was such a strong environmental factor in the park, altitude, etc. . Indeed, their home and road OPS are almost identical, .760 and .766, which is a smaller split than the 29 point average across the entire league. Also, the Rockies hit 115 points better when they are behind; the NL overall has basically no difference there. It's curious, certainly - but since this series is at Chase, probably irrelevant. Something to keep an eye on, however.

For the purposes of this series, however, it's perhaps an indication that our pitchers shouldn't feel too intimidated. The Arizona starters have been very solid, and we'll be trying for our fifth consecutive team quality start, Miley having been the only member of the rotation who didn't deliver last time through. Considering we only had a total of three in our first 24 attempts, going into the series finale against the Cubs on Thursday, that's quite some turnaround. Not that it proved particularly helpful on Saturday and Sunday, admittedly, as the bullpen and offense respectively proved feeble enough to lead to defeat. But I'm of the opinion that it all starts with starting pitching.
