When we get good starting pitching and offense, the bullpen melts down. When we get good starting pitching and relief pitching, the offense doesn't show up. I guess, tomorrow will be the starter's turn to suck.

There wasn't much wrong with Brandon McCarthy this afternoon, striking out a career high 12 batters and going a solid seven innings for the Diamondbacks. He allowed seven hits and a walk, but got no real help from his defense. The first Phillies run scored on a high fly-ball which stayed in the air for what seemed a very long time, before dropping between A.J. Pollock and Cody Ross. And the second came after Chris Owings made all advised throw to third, which caromed off the runner, allowing the Phillie to go home as well. But it was certainly Brandon's best outing, and he deserved better his record going to 0-5, the first D-back there after 29 games since Willie Blair in 1998.

The offense was absolutely no help at all, managing six base-runners all afternoon off A.J. Burnett and Jonathan Papelbon. Perhaps their best chance came in the third, when A.J. Pollock and Owings singled to lead things off. However, McCarthy couldn't get a good bunt down, and Gerardo Parra hit into a double-play. We got the tying run to the plate in the ninth after Miguel Montero singled, but nothing ensued, and the team were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, dropping their average there this season to .218. Owings had a pair of hits.

Tommie will be along in a bit with the full recap, and we now await the arrival of the Rockies, for a three-game set starting tomorrow night. Franklin Morales vs. Wade Miley is the match-up in tomorrow's opener.

Any momentum the team had, was derailed by a single wretched inning last night. How will they respond in the rubber game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Chase Field this afternoon?

So, the win streak which started with a bullpen meltdown in Chicago, ended in the same way, as Joe Thatcher and Trevor Cahill (with a little assist from Martin Prado) couldn't hold on to a three-run lead for three outs in the eighth innings yesterday. Much criticism of Kirk Gibson's management, and some is certainly justified, though his options were limited by both Brad Ziegler and Addison Reed having pitched in three consecutive games, so effectively being crossed off. The aim was clear: get through the eighth and turn the save situation over to J.J. Putz in the ninth. However, it didn't quite work out that way.

It's really the manner of the loss which is particularly annoying, rather than the loss itself - the pitching match-up there didn't seem to favor Arizona at all, but we got an excellent performance from Bronson Arroyo, and hit Cliff Lee far better than expected. Not being able to take advantage of that, is certainly a downer. We'll see how the team bounces back from this. On the opposition side, there'll be a familiar face, as Jody Jackson subsequently Tweeted:
