The trade this afternoon has a number of ramifications for the team next year.

40-man roster

The move had a large impact on the 40-man roster, with both David Holmberg and Heath Bell coming off, and no players needing to be added to it - Justin Choate does not have enough service time to need adding, and of course, the player to be named later is still a hypothetical construct at this point [Schrodinger's Prospect, a wave-particle duality which will either collapse into something worth having or a bag of balls, at some point in the future]. Add in the decision to non-tender Daniel Hudson, and the team now has three spots open.

The Rule 5 draft takes place on December 12, as part of the winter meetings in Florida. I believe it's now too late for the team to protect any additional prospects by adding them to the 40-man roster - that had to happen when the teams filed their reserve lists on November 20. But it does mean the team has got plenty of scope, if they are interested in adding any unprotected prospects during the draft. Normal rules would have to be followed if they did, however, e.g. any player picked during the first phase, has to be kept on the 25-man roster for the whole season, or offered back to his original club. We'll get more into that next week, I imagine.

Bullpen construction

The departure of Bell does open up, somewhat, the apparent log-jam in the team's bullpen. It now seems likely that we will see J.J. Putz re-instated as closer, with David Hernandez in the eighth innings, and Brad Ziegler with a bit of a "reliever without portfolio" remit, working the seventh, or wherever we need a ground-ball. As before, Joe Thatcher is the situational leftie, Josh Collmenter works long relief, and Will Harris mops up, but there's now an open spot. That could be used for someone picked up in the Rule 5 draft, or it could go to Matt Stites, the potential closer of the future, received from San Diego in the Ian Kennedy trade.

The purse-strings loosen

The financial flexibility resulting from the move will allow the Diamondbacks, according to Kevin Towers, "to add depth and plug holes." How much does the team have to play with? When I looked at our salary bill last week, here's how things stood: "After the decision to let Tony Sipp go, the D-backs will pay almost $90 million to 15 players on their roster who are under contract or eligible for arbitration. With replacements for Eric Chavez and Wil Nieves still to be signed, if we budget $4 million for that pair, and the balance of the roster spots at league-minimum ($500,000 in 2014), that would take the total to $97.8 million."

Per Nick Piecoro, the trade will save the Diamondbacks $6 million, taking us down to $92 million. Ken Kendrick has already said the team payroll will be at or above the highest it has ever been, which would be $103 million or more, so that would appear to mean around $11 million, possibly a little above that, will be available for further acquisitions this winter. The tally may be higher, depending on any additional moves affecting the roster. For instance, if the deal involved us trading Gerardo Parra, his expected salary of $4 million would be added to the pot. If it's Didi Gregorius; the impact on the available cash would be pretty negligible.

The question is, do we split this across the team's needs, of a power-hitting corner outfielder and a front of the rotation starting pitcher? Or do we avoid putting all our eggs in one basket, and allocate the resources to both? The danger of the latter approach is that you end up having to settle for mediocrity (in the true sense of the word), and we already have a fair number of mid-rotation possibilities. What seems increasingly clear, is that this is just the first shot in the winter salvos for the Diamondbacks. I'm definitely thinking this won't be the last move of the winter, nor will it be the biggest.

Reactions are beginning to filter in to the trade this afternoon, which sent Heath Bell to the Rays, and David Holmberg to the Reds.

Kevin Towers explains

Ok, so the Diamondbacks got abour $5.5 million in salary relief as a result of the trade. What are they going to do with it? Kevin Towers told MLB Trade Rumors during a post-deal conference call this afternoon: "We still got some bench pieces that we need to put together, we still have interest in bringing back Eric Chavez as a guy who was a key bench player on the club last year. We also want to add depth to our starting pitching, a No. 1 or a No. 2, that would probably come via trade. We have some free agents [that we like], but we'll probably be more aggressive on the trade front. Also, with Cody Ross coming back from the hip injury, we'll also look into a corner outfield bat."

Interestingly, no mention of any apparent desire for the team to replace Heath Bell in the Diamondbacks bullpen, even though he finished with most saves on the 2013 version. It seems more likely that the team will simply shuffle the existing pieces and promote from within, but I think we'll save more analysis of that for a separate post on the roster implications. Towers also said that Bell's problems really stemmed from location more than velocity, which does kinda tie in with what we saw: when Bell could locate his big curveball for strikes, he was lights out, but if hitters could lay off that and wait for the fastball...

More on the minors

John Sickels writes a bit about Choate, though even he doesn't have too much more to offer, which shows you how obscure a prospect we're talking about! He says, "Although he had a solid year in 2013 and expected to be drafted, he was not chosen and ended up signing a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Rays... He is listed at 6-0, 170, small for a right-hander and perhaps one reason why he wasn't drafted. He performed well in his pro debut with a 2.88 ERA and a 35/9 K/BB in 41 innings for Hudson Valley in the New York-Penn League. Control is his best attribute and if he makes it, it will be as a middle reliever." So, nothing too special, it would seem.

But Towers also discussed the PTBNL, and if we believe Towers, seems we should perhaps hold off on any real decision as to the trade's merits, until it has been announced. He said that prospect "will probably be the key player in the trade from his side," but rather than a list of possibilities, it appears the player in question has already been decided, and can't be named for "administrative reasons." I do know that PTBNL have to be named within six months, but it's unclear whether this would covers a 2013 draftee: they're not eligible to be dealt for a year, there seems some uncertainty as to whether that's a year from the (variable) draft date or the next June 1.

Fan reaction

It's always fun, in the wake of trades such as this, to lurk on the other teams' sites, and see how their readers are reactive. Over at Drays Bay, the fans there seem... strangely happy to have Bell on the roster, figuring he'll be their closer this year. I guess they weren't paying much attention to the National League in 2013, or perhaps they just have a lot more faith in Bell's peripherals. This appears to be in sharp contrast to Red Reporter, who were basically praying Bell wouldn't be heading their way. Though perhaps the funniest bit of rosterbation also came from Red Reporter, further up their trade thread, while the deal was still developing.

In decades to come, we'll look back and ask each other, "Where were you when you heard Heath Bell had been traded?" In my case, it was watching a spaghetti war flick called "Churchill's Leopards."

Let's start by reviewing the full details of the trade, because as usual with three-way deals, it's more than a little confusing.

Diamondbacks: Get Justin Choate + player to be named later (or cash), both from Rays
Give up Heath Bell + $500 K to Rays and David Holmberg to Reds.

Reds: Get Holmberg from the D-backs
Give up Ryan Hanningan to the Rays

Rays: Get Bell and $500K from the D-backs, catcher Hannigan from the Reds
Give up: Choate + player to be named later (or cash) to the D-backs

I hope that has cleared things up for everyone. From the D-backs point of view, the main things this does is free up about $5.5 million in payroll for this year, and one imagines this can now be used to fund the acquisition of a power outfielder with some pop or a starting pitcher, the two areas which Kevin Towers has made clear he feels are in most need of improvement. Bell arrived in Arizona in October 20th last year, part of another three-way deal with the other Florida team. That one saw Chris Young go to Oakland and Cliff Pennington come to Arizona, but I think this new deal tacitly admits the Heath Bell Experience wasn't what we wanted.

I guess we can pretty much now put a value on Holmberg: about $5 million: It's presumably coincidence that the move comes less than 24 hours after we non-tendered Daniel Hudson, meaning that both players received in the July 2010 deal with the White Sox for Edwin Jackson, are no longer with the Diamondbacks. Holmberg had a solid season at Double-A Mobile, putting up a 2.75 ERA over 26 starts, though hus K-rate did drop significantly at the new level. He made one start for the Diamondbacks: it didn't go well, and I just hope the deal works out better for us than the last guy to be one and done in our rotation.

As for what we received. The 22-year-old right-handed Choate signed with the Rays as a Minor League free agent in June 24 after pitching with the Roswell Invaders of the independent Pecos League. Choate pitched collegiately at his native Texarkana College from 2010-11 and Stephen F. Austin State University from 2012-13, and was 1-3 with six saves, a 2.88 ERA and 35:9 K:BB ratio in 40.2 IP, over 16 relief appearances with Short-Season A Hudson Valley. Beyond that... Yeah, there's not much to be found online, in part because there's a Justin Choate who is on some reality show called Swamp People. I don't think it's the same one. :) Our Justin is on the Twitter, however.

There's also the player to be named later, who could also turn into a suitcase containing an indeterminate amount of money. Which probably gives you an idea that he's not going to be anything particularly special. That's also suggested because, according to Nick Piecoro, players eligible to be picked in the Rule 5 draft next week can't be traded - which makes kinda sense, if you think about it. But if the player was any good, he'd have been protected by the Rays and on their 40-man roster. Since that apparently hasn't happened, presumably there's a list of possible players we'll get, and we get to pick from whatever's left after the draft.

As was already suggested in the comments thread of Clefo's news post, I also tend to think that this is the first move, rather than an end in itself - pleased though Mrs. SnakePit was when I told her at lunchtime that she wouldn't have to undergo the Heath Bell Experience again. It certainly does not appear that the D-backs do have enough salary payroll room for at least one significant addition to their 2014 roster. Going by Towers' previous comments, probably not a free-agent, so we're going to keep the Trade Alert Threat Level at Orange for the time being.
