The post ASB doldrums continue as the D'Backs drop the second game of a three game series against the Giants.

I'll level with you guys. I could probably sum up this game with the following cropped screenshot of the position players for the Diamondbacks tonight:

But I think Jim would get mad at me, so we soldier on. Wade Miley took the hill against Matt Cain and things happened. The first thing that happened was Miley giving up an RBI double to Pablo Sandoval to make it 1-0 Giants in the 1st. Wade settled down in the 2nd and 3rd innings. However, in the 4th he ran into some trouble. He loaded up the bases with no outs. He also walked Jeff Francoeur with some "looks good to me!" pitches being called balls to make it 2-0.

Now, you might think things would really go to poop at this point, but to Miley's credit that was all he allowed that inning. After a wild pitch, he made a good play at the plate to tag out Pablo Sandoval to prevent a run from scoring. He then got Tony Abreu to ground to Martin Prado, who threw Pence out at the plate. A strikeout later and Miley was out of it with minimal damage.

Not that this impressed Kirk Gibson very much, but you can't please everyone, I guess. With two runners on and one out, Gibby pulled Miley for pinch hitter Eric Chavez. Chavez proceeded to ground into half a double play. A takeout slide by Cliff Pennington combined with a bad throw from Tony Abreu ended up with a relay throw not in the First Baseman's glove, which scored Martin Prado to make it 2-1 Giants. Adam Eaton and Gerardo Parra drew walks against Cain and for the second time in two games, Paul Goldschmidt came up with the bases loaded and two outs and a chance to give his team some runs. For the second time in two games, he grounded out.

Josh Collmenter came in relief of Miley in the 5th. With two outs and one runner on, he faced Buster Posey. Posey proceeded to be very rude and drive one to dead center field for a home run to make it 4-1 Giants. In the top of the 6th, Aaron Hill and Parra would lead off the inning with singles. Martin Prado had a single himself after that and the D'Backs got that extra run they needed in the previous inning to make it 4-2. Two fly outs and a walk later, Adam Eaton came up with the bases loaded and two outs. In a familiar theme, he struck out swinging on a very ugly pitch that most Little Leaguers would have laid off of. Except for that one guy I knew. Wonder what happened to him?

Anyway, for the rest of the offensive night, the D'Backs would get runners on base and then proceed to strand them in the last three times at bat. However, in the 9th, Martin Prado was able to get an RBI single to score Paul Goldschmidt to make it 4-3! There was a chance to tie the game possibly with two outs. It's Cody Ross against a righty, what could go wrong?

He struck out, and that was that.

The Diamondbacks left a lot of dudes on bases tonight. Like, a lot. Like bases loaded twice and two men on a few times. Well let me tell you kids, leaving men on base is NOT COOL.

You might think that just because your friends are leaving men on base that it's okay that you do too, and maybe you heard that your parents did it in the 60s, but that's no excuse my friend.

You might think you're Paul Goldschmidt, after leaving the bases loaded last night, you do it again tonight in the 5th inning. Or you're Adam Eaton, and you do it in the 6th.

Buster, soon you'll be sleeping under bus stations and begging on the streets for a hit of drug cigarettes if you keep doing that.

Also a menace: Pitchers allowing early runs. Pitchers allowing late runs. Pitchers allowing any runs. Wade Miley allowed an RBI double to Pablo Sandoval and walked in a run. He was pulled early for Josh Collmenter, who gave up a two run homer to Buster Posey.

Sure you almost come back with a late run in the 9th, but that's never enough, kids. You just strike out in a bad righty on righty matchup to end the game.

Full recap coming.. IF YOU HAVEN'T DIED YET.

Safe to say, last night's game wasn't quite the start to the second-half of the season we wanted: we're still looking for our first run. Hopefully, tonight will go a little better, offensively.

Well, I had a lovely preview under way, but then my computer locked up totally: not even a CTRL-ALT-DEL could rescue it from its state as a high-tech doorstop. Finally, a hard reboot eventually did the trick, but took forever. And I get back in to find that the auto-save feature which should have kept a copy of my preview, hadn't. So you'll forgive me if this preview is short, bordering on the terse, and probably rather grumpy.

On the other hand, might be best it was lost, as it was rather scathing, shall we say, about the social media outpouring of woe after last night's game. Judging by the Twitter, the Diamondbacks will never score again and have just been eliminated from playoff contention. Sure, it'd have been nice to have started the second half better: by scoring a run, for example. But there are 66 games left, and contests like last night are going to happen. Even if we make the playoffs, we're probably looking at close to 30 losses between now and the end of the season. In other words: chill, people.

And with that. Beat the Giants. Dodgers and Nationals are locked in a scoreless game in the sixth, should you be interested. And I know you probably are,
