The D-backs reach the All-Star break in first place, but couldn't end with a win, as the Brewers avoided the sweep at Chase Field. Ian Kennedy took the loss, dropping his record for the year to 3-6.

Record: 50-45. Pace: 85-77. Change: +3

Ian Kennedy gave up 3 runs in the first inning, 1 run in the second inning, and after a clean 3rd & 4th inning he allowed another run in the 5th. Enough said. The Diamondbacks packed their vacation bags - including their bats as Milwaukee's Wily Peralta struck out 8 giving up only 1 run on a Miggy homerun in the 5th inning. Dbacks lose in an uneventful manner 5 to 1.

On the bright side (of life), newly recalled from Triple A Reno, Eury De La Rosa pitched 2 strong innings of relief striking out 3.

Side Note: Gibby makes an unusual move and takes an early trip to the mound to scold IPK. Ian Kennedy believes he has the right to claim himself the Dbacks "Ace". Slotted as the #1 pitcher, 2 years removed from from a 20 win season yet, if there weren't 25,057 people watching, I believe Gibby would have pulled Kennedy's pants down and spanked him like a 2 year old. Kennedy pitched like a spoiled child wanting more candy.

I'm the Angry Saguaro and I watch baseball, MLB & MILB 24/7 and have plenty of angry opinions & beer talk. I'm willing to start a Dbacks "Beer & Trader Post" during the All Star break if interested...up to my boss Jim. Let me know-I'll work the boards 24/7.
Kennedy managed to suck the life out of the Gameday Thread earlier, with a lot of people understandably deciding they had better things to do after the three-run first. JoeCB1991 led the way, ahead of preston.salisbury, soco: those were the only three even to reach 20 comments today. Present in smaller quantities were: 4 Corners Fan, Angry_Saguaro, Clefo, D-Back, EzioExManAZ, Fangdango, Gravity, GuruB, Jim McLennan, , Majabe, Rockkstarr12, Stumpy657, UAwildcats, alphadrew88, asteroid, azshadowwalker, cheese1213, coldblueAZ, cole8865, hotclaws, onedotfive, piratedan7, txzona and xmet. Mr. Saguaro picked the CotD above, but an honorary mention to joe:

That's it for meaningful games until Friday. The Rockies have completed their defeat of the Dodgers, so we are 2 1/2 up at the break. Don't go away though, as there will be lots of stuff taking place during the break, including Gameday Threads for the Home-run Derby and All-Star Game. And don't forget the SnakePit Video Roundtable at 8pm tonight, with your host, Clefo.

Not with a bang, but with a whimper, go Arizona into their All-star break, as they couldn't complete the sweep over Milwaukee at Chase Field. Ian Kennedy struggled early, and the offense weren't able to do much either.

Ian Kennedy's afternoon started badly, as the first four Brewers got hits, and by the time he escaped the first, they had scored three runs, which was easily all the visitors would need. They added single tallies in the second and fifth: Kennedy ended the day in the seventh inning, allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks with five strikeouts. He took the less, and heads into the break with a 3-6 record, and 5.42 ERA. Josh Collmenter finished the seventh, and left-hander Eury de la Rosa had an impressive major-league debut, working two perfect innings and striking out three.

The offense had some chances, but couldn't convert them, and their only score came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Miguel Montero hit his eighth home-run of the season. Paul Goldschmidt and Aaron Hill each had a pair of hits, while Adam Eaton reached base twice, on a hit and a walk, though was also picked off base for our daily TOOTBLAN. Martin Prado hit into his team-leading 15th double-play. The defeat locked the SnakeLine of the week at under, with a run differential over the weekend of -2.

Right now, the Dodgers are losing to the Rockies in the eighth inning: if that keeps up, the D-backs lead will remain at 2.5 games over the All-Star break. Angry Saguaro will be along in a little bit with the guest recap, and don't forget to tune in later for the weekly SnakePit Video Roundtable. Arizona's next game is on Friday, when they start the second-half with a series against the Giants in San Francisco.

Two top Diamondbacks' prospects should appear: Matt Davidson is starting at 3B for Team USA, and Archie Bradley is also on the roster. With both scheduled to be a big part of the Diamondback future, here's a chance to jump on the bandwagon now. The game is on ESPN 2, so you can kill a couple of hours with that, before Arizona starts their quest to complete a sweep of Milwaukee at Chase Field. Ok, there is another reason I'm posting this early: we're off to see Pacific Rim this morning, so by the regularly-scheduled time of posting, we'll be knee-deep in severed kaiju limbs. Looking forward to it: haven't seen a really noisy, mindlessly-large action flick for a while.

Hopefully, the Diamondbacks will deliver the same against the Brewers while we're out, completing the four-game sweep over the visitors and going strong into the All-Star break. It has been quite the series, with Arizona coming from behind to take all three games so far. Last night, as in the opener, they did it from three runs back, and beating another opposing #1. I like the way they were able to hold on, with Randall Delgado just about keeping the team in the game, within striking distance, and even after the three-run sixth put Arizona down again, they didn't quit. Just what we needed to see, after a disappointing series against LA.

Can Kennedy finish things off in style for us, and pick up his first victory since the first of June? He hasn't necessarily pitched badly since, but last time definitely felt like a step backwards, as he allowed nine hits, three walks and six runs against Los Angeles, without getting through the sixth inning. We'll need better than that kind of outing from Kennedy in the second half, and again, I think there's a psychological boost to be had from going into the break strong. Be interesting to see what Gibson does in terms of organizing the rotation when we start up again on Friday. That would be scheduled to be Kennedy, but will Gibby re-arrange things?

On the opposition side, we face Wily Peralta, Super Genius. Yeah, I know it's pronounced the same way as Wily Mo Pena [who, incidentally, is playing for the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks over in Japan these days], but I imagine Peralta's video session involve him coming up with schemes to retire batters that involve rocket-propelled roller-skates, an anvil, and industrial-strength elastic, all ordered from Acme, naturally. All the D-backs hitters need to do, is paint a fake home-plate on the side of the dugout, and Peralta will be hopelessly confused. Sounds like a plan to me, anyway.

No line-up at this point. I trust some kind editor will pop one into the Gameday Thread between now and first pitch this afternoon. Angry Saguaro Joel will be on the guest recap this afternoon, so looking forward to that. I feel confident there might be a mention of beer in there somewhere....
