The game opens loudly with a miraculous double by Willie Bloomquist, however the next 3 batters go down in order to end the top of the 1st. The game is pretty quiet until the bottom of the 3rd inning when Kurt Suzuki leads off the half inning with a walk. Gio Gonzalez advances the runner with a sac bunt and Denard Span hits a single to center that scores Suzuki to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Nationals. Anthony Rendon hits a single as does Jayson Werth. Werth's single scored Spand and moves Rendon over to 3rd to make the score 2-0 in favor of Washington. Adam LaRoche hits a 3-run Home run to make the score 6-0 in favor of Washington. The game slows once again until the bottom of the 5th, when Jayson Werth hits a leadoff double and LaRoche singles. Ian Desmond hits a sacrifice fly to right field and scores Werth to make the score 7-0. Chad Tracy and Roger Bernardina make two quick outs to end the inning. Bloomquist starts the inning off with a line out and Aaron Hill gets a double. Paul Goldschmidt hits a single to right as does Montero. Montero's single scored Hill to make the score 6-1. Cody Ross and Parra make two outs to end the top of the 6th. The game quiets down for a half inning until the top of the 7th when A.J. Pollock hits a single. Cliff Pennington and Bloomquist both make ground outs but they advance Pollock to 3rd. Aaron Hill walks and Goldschmidt hits another single that scores Pollock to make the score 6-2 and extends Goldy's lead in most RBIs for a National League player. Montero reaches on a fielding error by Rendon and Hill scores to make the score 6-3. Not much happens in the bottom of the 7th other than a couple of hits from LaRoche and Rendon. In the top of the 8th Martin Prado leads off with a solo home run to make it 6-4. The Dbacks go down in order after that. More scoring takes place in the bottom of the 8th when Steve Lombardozzi scores on a missed catch error by Brad Ziegler. Bloomquist and Hill leads off the top of the 9th with a couple outs. Paul Goldschmidt singles on a line drive to center. Miguel Montero Hits a single as well and scores Goldschmidt to make the score 5-7 but Martin Prado grounds out after a Cody Ross single to end the attempted comeback and the game.

The offenses did its part tonight with 14 hits however the pitching didn't fare so well as Trevor Cahill had a meltdown and gave up 6 earned runs over 5 innings pitched. Paul Goldschmidt continued his stellar hitting by going 3-5 with an RBI. Aaron Hill looked good in his return from the DL going 2-4 and scoring twice.

The Washington Nationals had a good day on offense as well with 11 hits. Ex-Dback Adam LaRoche had a good day at the plate going 3-4 with 1HR and 3 RBI. Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez had a good start as well giving up 2 earned runs over 6.1 innings.

This game was a kind of a slug fest. The Dbacks fought their hardest to comeback from the deficit but fell short with a score of 5-7.

Into the NL East go the Diamondbacks, beginning a tough stretch that sees them playing every day until the All-Star break. The 10-game road trip which starts that off, begins this evening in Washington.

Aaron Hill returns to the Diamondbacks line-up this afternoon, and immediately gets plugged right into the #2 spot. It's amazing how much better that makes things look, from the point of view of offense - even if it does mean that, because we are facing a left-hander, we get Willie B batting leadoff [actually only the second time we've seen that this season]. Prado is also back in the line-up at third, a return which seems just about pre-destined after Cliff Pennington clanked the first ball hit to him at third-base on Sunday. Don't think that's an experiment we will see being repeated at any time in the near future.

Next, some good news concerning Thursday's game. Well, and some bad. Starting with the former: It was not originally going to be televised by Fox Sports Arizona, has now been added to the schedule. That's mainly because it features Patrick Corbin making another stab at getting his 10th win, and taking his record to 10-0, unprecedented in Diamondbacks history. The bad news? The game still starts at 1:05pm Arizona time, so those of us here with day jobs will still be on Gameday yelling, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT? WHAT JUST HAPPENED? at cryptic (but likely gloomy) comments in the Gameday Thread. While it'll be replayed in the evening, that just won't be the same...

Elsewhere, J.J. Putz should have completed his rehab work, throwing an inning for the Aces this afternoon in the second of his back-to-back appearances. He led off with a walk, then got a pair of ground-balls which erased the runner and ended the inning respectively. He is now apparently headed back to Phoenix for evaluation, and isn't sure whereabout he'll pitch next. However, assuming there are no ill-effects from these consecutive outings, it's not too much of a stretch to think that he'll join the team in Washington at some point this series. Not sure what the roster move will be: probably be Zeke Spruill going back down, though it could be Will Harris. Speaking of closers:

Translated from the Gibby: I've a feeling this means, "Bell is slightly behind Josh Wilson in terms of pitching a save situation this evening." Which is saying something, considering Wilson was DFA'd during the Cincinnati series. I'd expect Hernandez to get the call tonight if the opportunity arises, with Ziegler getting any important outs in the eighth, because I do not want anyone "working on mechanical corrections" to be found in the same zip-code as a high-leverage situation. If Bell is going to give up any home-runs - and given the performance in his last five outings, that's a certainty - it should be in mop-up duty.

Right, better get this posted, since it's an early game and I already got distracted by the Hinske suspension thing. BattleMoses on the recaps, see you for that.
