Welcome to Dbacks 2013 number 48. Will Brandon McCarthy have another great start or will he get attacked by Lotus Shrimp? find out after the jump

The game starts off with a quick 1st inning, as both pitchers sit down the opposing team in order. McCarthy runs into trouble in the top of the second when Carlos Quentin pummels a lead-off double to left field, then Yonder Alonso comes to bat and smacks a single to left field to score Quentin from 2nd. The Padres go down in order after that. In the top of the 3rd inning, Eric Stults hits a grounder to short and Didi Gregorious makes a fantastic running grab for the first out. The Padres go down in order after that. The game quiets down until the bottom of the seventh when Miguel Montero hits a ground rule double and Martin Prado hits a double of his own that scores Miguel Montero and ties the game up at 1-1. Parra grounds out but advance Prado to 3rd and Cliff Pennington walks. Wil Nieves comes in as a substitution for McCarthy and smacks a 2 run double to left and scores Prado from third to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Dbacks. A.J. Pollock decides to join the party with a single that scores Pennington to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Dbacks. Gregorious reaches on a fielders choice and Nieves gets thrown out at home. Paul Goldschmidt comes up and hits a double that scores Gregorious and Pollock that makes the score 5-2 in favor of the Dbacks. Cody Ross comes up and uses his evil powers to get a ground out and end the inning. David Hernandez comes in to pitch the top of the 8th and gives up a lead-off homerun to Everth Cabrera. The next two batters go down, but Carlos Quentin hits a double. Yonder Alonso flies out in the next at bat to end the Padres scoring threat. The Padres fail to make any more noise and fall to the Dbacks with a score of 5-2.

It was a good night for Brandon McCarthy as he put in another good start when he pitched 7 innings while giving up 1 run and 2 strike outs. Padres pitcher Eric Stults was troubling the Dbacks until the bottom of the 7th. Brandon gave up his only run in the 2nd inning when Yonder Alonso singles Carlos Quentin home from 2nd. All of the Dbacks runs came in the bottom of the 7th when they scored 5 runs on 3 doubles and a single. David Hernandez replaced McCarthy and gave up a home run to Everth Cabrera. To make the score 5-2 still in favor of the the Dbacks. The Heath Bell Experience came in for the save in the ninth and looked shaky, but managed to keep himself together long enough to get the save and notch the win for the Diamondbacks to keep them tied for 1st place in the NL West.

Ah, the joys of batting average on balls in play. McCarthy's BABIP during his five April starts = .404, a significant factor in why he went 0-3 with a 7.48 ERA. Over his four May appearances? .267. The latter is much more credible in terms of a long-term, sustainable number - while perhaps a little low, given his career figure is .289, it's not too far out of whack. So I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll be enjoying this version, as the "real" Brandon the rest of the way. Maybe not quite the one who has posted 17 consecutive scoreless innings, over the past two games, but I'd settle for the one who has given us a May ERA, down at an excellent 2.15.

It'll actually be the first time McCarthy has ever faced the Padres, and their current roster has a total of nine plate-appearances lifetime against him, most of those coming courtesy of Mr. Dead Horse v1.0. Arizona missed Stults over the earlier series, in San Diego:: we faced him three times last year, though the results were all over the place. While all three outings lasted 6-7 innings, he allowed six, zero and three runs respectively, so take from that what you will, and you'll probably find something to reflect tonight's results. Ross, Goldschmidt, Montero and Prado all have career OPS's against him in excess of 1.000, though that's 36 PAs combined, so small sample size applies.

Scoreboard watching will likely be in full effect tonight, as the two teams with whom we are tied for the lead in the NL West, the Giants and Rockies, are facing each other in San Francisco. So actually, in terms of the standings, I guess it doesn't matter much who wins, since our destiny is entirely in our own hands. We'll either be tied with one for first, and a game ahead of the other (if we win), or tied with one for second, a game behind the other (if we lose). BattleMoses is on the recap tonight, 'charmer continuing to find better things to do on a Friday night! :)
