Brandon McCarthy pitched a complete game shutout, the first for a Diamonbacks starter this season, and Gerardo Parra gave just enough offensively and defensively for the D'Backs to take the series from the Marlins.

Are you the sort of person who watches the first pitch of a baseball game and then say to themselves "Well, that's all I need to see in this game. Time to watch the Sonic the Hedgehog Cartoon on Netflix. Not the serious one, the weird educational one!"? If you are, then this particular game validated your life choices up to this point in your life. Gerardo Parra smashed the first pitch he saw from Marlins starter Tom Koehler into the Right Field bullpen to make it 1-0 Diamondbacks.

Brandon McCarthy was the starter for the Diamondbacks. He had previously pitched eight shutout innings against the Phillies last Sunday, but was pulled in the ninth for Heath Bell and... Well you remember how that went down. He continued where he left off in this start. He got two quick outs to start off the game, but then gave up a "walk" to Derek Dietrich. I put "walk" in quotation marks all clever-like because from my eye and according to gameday, McCarthy threw two pitches that seemed obvious strikes that were not called as such. Marcell Ozuna singled and that brought up Chris Coghlan. He lined a ball that was just out of the reach of Martin Prado at second, but Gerardo Parra exists and was able to gun Dietrich down at the plate.

Replays show that, at the very least, it was a close play and there might have been an argument for Dietrich being called safe, depending on when Miguel Montero's glove got to him. In this recapper's opinion, it wouldn't have been too egregious if called either way, and wasn't the worst umpiring decision of the game.

From that point forward, McCarthy retired the next fourteen batters he faced, and did not give up another baserunner until Adeiny Hechavarria singled in the sixth. He walked Marcell Ozuna to lead off the seventh, but after Coghlan struck out swinging, it looked like Montero had him picked off at first for leaning off the base too much, and he did! However, the umpire, who was part of the crew in the Bo Porter thing from last week, seemed to think that the base is really just an artificial construct in our minds, man, and that we are all really safe if you really think about it. He then asked Paul Goldschmidt if he had any Funyuns. Goldy did not.

That was the last baserunner McCarthy allowed. He went 1-2-3 in the eighth, and in a move makes you think that Gibby is learning, was left out in the ninth and also went 1-2-3 to secure the complete game shutout. Sure, it's the Marlins, but the last three starts for Brandon have been of the "Quality Start" variety, and is a really good sign going forward, especially after his struggles in April, and while pitcher wins are also a meaningless construct created by The Man to keep us down (Funyuns, anyone?) , it was good to see Brandon finally get one.

And the offense that couldn't push across more than one run? Well... Hey look, a bird! *runs*

Touchdown, Seahawks!

At the time of writing, the Rockies are up 6-1 on the Giants in the seventh. If that holds, the D'Backs will be alone in first place. That is nice.

Tomorrow morning (10 AM Arizona time!) The D'Backs will go for a sweep with Wade Miley facing off against Rickey Nolasco. Watch it, because I will be!

Brandon McCarthy threw a complete game shutout as the Diamondbacks took game two from the Marlins, and the series win along with it.

Gerardo Parra homered the first pitch in the entire game from Tom Koehler and that was the only run that crossed the plate as the Diamondbacks took the win over the Miami Marlins by the score of 1-0. Brandon McCarthy pitched the first complete game for the D'Backs this season, and he got his first win of the season. McCarthy only gave up three hits and two walks and struck out five in the shutout.

The only chance the Marlins had was in the bottom of the first. With Derek Dietrich on second base, Chris Coghlan hit a liner just out of the reach of Martin Prado. However, Parra was able to get it and gunned it to the plate in front of Dietrich and Miguel Montero applied the tag and Dietrich was called out. Replays show that it was a fairly close call and Dietrich might have been safe. However, it was a bang bang play and it being called either way would have probably been "right". It was not the most egregious umpiring decision of the game. What was the worst? Find out in the full recap, coming soon!

Brandon McCarthy, you may not get a better chance to win a game this season. I recommend taking advantage.

Dang. Three days in a row with the same starting eight? Hey, don't change what's clearly working, amIright? For Arizona are 8-3, since going into Los Angeles just one game over .500, and are tied for the lead in the NL West, thanks to Colorado managing to hold on for the win last night over San Francisco, by the odd run in nineteen. But there's absolutely no reason to let up, and we expect to see McCarthy get his first W today, ending an eight-game streak without a victory, that's the longest by a Diamondback starter since Joe Saunders went 11, beginning late in the 2010 campaign. [The all-time mark is 17, by Brian Anderson in 2001-02]

But does it count, if it happens in Marlins Park, and nobody sees? Last night's game there had an announced attendance of 13,444, the worst since they opened the new stadium - as kishi pointed out, factor in the usual no-shows and the number actually there was likely below an average game at Salt River Fields. The honeymoon is over, and the Marlins' average crowd is right back in to the same eighteen thousand range occupied from 2009-11, before the taxpayers handed over that shiny, new bauble. And the trend ain't good: the high over the last seven home games for Miami, is 16,680.

It's not inconceivable, once the true, historical wretchedness of this team becomes apparent, that we could end up seeing an average number at or below the 2006 number, of 14,372. It's all but certain Florida will go back to being the least-attended team in the National League, since they're already more than two thousand a game behind the 14th-placed Pirates. [Curiously, eight of the bottom ten teams in attendance right now are American League outfits, which seems to belie the idea that the designated hitter draws people to the ballpark] For what it's worth, attendance overall this season is down about 800 per game.

Anyway. I trust the Diamondbacks will deliver a kerb-stomping not dissimilar from last night's. If the Rockies co-operate, we could find ourselves in sole possession of first place by the end of the day. We then simply have to hang on to it for 119 games...
