The Diamondbacks are going to continue to have 1 run games, whether you like it or not.

Record: 15-14. Pace: 84-78. Change over last year: +2.

Don't let the score deceive you; this game was not as close as it appears. It wasn't a blow-out, either. It was just a long walk through suburbia.

The Diamondbacks started the game with two straight strikeouts against Jason Marquis of all pitchers could have been considered a sign of what was to come. Not that the Diamondbacks struggled offensively, though they kind of did despite the end score, but more that it was a weird game.

Arizona would strike first in the second inning, with Miguel Montero depositing a home run past the centerfield wall for his second of the season. Maybe now he'll get it going. His blast didn't last long in keeping the away team in the lead, though, with the Padres fighting back in the bottom of the second to get two runs. It was a inning where Wade Miley was getting kind of hit hard, giving up a double, a single, and a triple.

Miley didn't have a great night, going only 5 innings whilst giving up 9 hits, 4 earned runs, and 3 walks. He did get 4 strikeouts, but he just hasn't looked comfortable on the mound for the past couple starts. What's the matter with Torgo? I can't say for certain, but I'm putting my money on a goblin curse.

Anyways, there was a point, before Miley gave up the lead again, that it looked like the Diamondbacks might hold on to a win. Granted, it was early, but baby, I'm a dreamer. In the top of the fourth Arizona got things going again, and had two on by 2 walks and a fielder's choice for Eric Chavez. He promptly doubled to bring in Cody Ross. Then <strike>Chad</strike> Cliff Pennington grounded out to bring in Montero for a second run to give the D-backs a 3-2 lead.

But good things never last, in my experience. The Padres took back the lead in the bottom of the fifth and never looked back. Jesus Guzman was on base after a fielder's choice, and he won one free pass to pass home, courtesy of his good friend Yonder Alonso, who hit a homer somewhere yonder the right field wall, right where the Jack Daniels fields a home run of choices in adult beverages.

Things happened after that, I guess. Brad Ziegler came in a turned the Moulin Rouge into a real theater, to predictable results. Gerardo Parra made things kind of interesting in the ninth by hitting a three run homer with two outs to make the deficit only one.

It wouldn't be enough, which you should already know because the title of this recap has the score.

Not a very busy Gameday Thread, just barely topping 400 comments. I think this was partially due to it being a Friday night, but also due to the soul sucking nature of the game. Even Parra's home run didn't generate too much excitement. I topped the list with 45 comments, and I was joined by: 4 Corners Fan, AJV19, AzDbackfanInDc, AzRattler, Baseballdad, Bryan J.
So there you have it, another D-backs loss. Tomorrow they face off against the Padres again, with Patrick Corbin and Clayton Richard being the respective starters. First pitch is at 5:40pm, so be here, or somewhere else.

Well, at least the bullpen didn't blow this one. They didn't help [SnakeLines count: 3 runs], but they didn't give up the lead.

Is it time to be concerned about Wade Miley? Because in his last two starts, covering just 9.1 innings, he has now allowed 13 hits and 10 walks. And unlike last time, he couldn't slide out of trouble, as the Padres took him for four runs in five innings tonight. That cost the Diamondbacks a pair of leads: they got on the board first, with Miguel Montero's first home-run in over a month, and retook the lead with a two-run fourth, before a Yonder Alonzo homer in the fifth, gave San Diego the lead for good.

They then padded the lead, adding three more against Josh Collmenter and Brad Ziegler, and those insurance runs proved to be vital, as the Diamondbacks staged a late, late rally, Gerardo Parra homering with two out in the ninth, a three-run shot which pulled the visitors back within one (and provided tacos). But Martin Prado flew out, and it was just another one-run game, our 13th in 29 contests this season. Prado got two hits, while Montero and Paul Goldschmidt each reached base safely three times, but the defeat extended the Diamondbacks' losing streak to four.

soco will be along with the recap shortly, and tomorrow, it will be Patrick Corbin going up against Clayton Richard.

We arrived in San Diego, where the Padres, after a wretched start which saw them win just five of their first twenty games, have bounced back to take six of the last eight, including a sweep of the same Giants who just swept us. It wouldn't do to take them lightly - though the sweep was by a combined margin of four runs, and like the D-backs, a lot of their intra-division contests have been quite close. I'm still hoping for a blowout victory tonight, simply because I feel we deserve one. The Padres already had their good fortune for the week: four games against the Cubs.

As usual for the opening game in the series, ZM has written about the opposition much better than I could, though I will say I don't think we ever hated Carlos Quentin. He was basically the 2008 version of Justin Upton, who had trolls breathlessly rushing in to enlighten us, whenever Carlos did anything good. Of course, in the four-plus seasons since then, he has put up a grand total of 3.9 bWAR, a win less than another former D-backs outfielder from that era, Scott Hairston, over the same time. There's probably a moral here, though I'm not quite sure what it is. And it probably only works if you ignore the #22 jersey, lying crumpled up at the back of the wardrobe.

It's kinda ironic Quentin is back under Padres GM Josh Byrnes, he being the same man who traded Quentin away from Arizona, for Chris Carter, in December 2007. One thing which hasn't changed, is Quentin's ability to get hit by pitches. Since the start of the 2011 season, Quentin has been hit 43 times; that's eight more than the second-placed Kevin Youkilis, who has over 200 more trips to the plate. Among batters with less than 900 PAs during that time, like Carlos, the next most is Sean Rodriguez, all the way down on 23 HBPs. So you'd think Quentin would be used to it by now. Not according to Zack Greinke, anyway.

Might be myself, might be soco, on the recap tonight. It kinda depends how things unfold. 'charmer is on baby watch. I don't think she's the one actually having the baby, but let's be honest, I pretty much glaze over and tune out when the B-word crops up, much as Mrs. SnakePit does with words like "BABIP". There will be a recap, though it may not come from someone who actually watched the game.
