The Bats get left behind in New York, spoil Alex Young’s great outing

Joe Ross and four relievers combined to shutout the Diamondbacks tonight on 1 hit. The lone hit was an infield single by the pitcher Alex Young. (Young’s first hit of his major league career)

The Diamondbacks just could not put together any good at bats. The frustration was off the charts as Ross issued five walks in the first 3 innings but no hits or runs followed. In fact the five at bats that followed those walks produced 3 groundouts, (including a Carson Kelly GBDP), a strikeout and a flyout on just 20 pitches. The approach and execution with runners on base was more than lacking. You could sense the frustration for manager Torey Lovullo after the game

In fact , about Young’s hit, this sad little note was passed to me during the game:

No pitcher since 1906 has struck out at least 9 batters and accounted for all of his team’s hits in a game

Young pitched really well again, matching Ross through the first five scoreless innings. But in the 6th he allowed a leadoff double to former DBack Adam Eaton. Two outs later Torey called for the intentional walk to Brian Dozier with first base open to get the lefty on lefty matchup with Matt Adams, who had already struck out twice in the game. As Lovullo said after the game, it was really a no brainer move, and I can’t disagree. But the move backfired, as Adams ripped the first pitch he saw, an 84 MPH cutter, for a double down the right field line scoring both Eaton and Dozier. It was Young’s worst pitch of the night

Young’s final line was 6 IP, 2 hits, 3 walks, (1 IBB) 2 ER, and a career high 9 strikeouts. He was getting ahead all night, and had Nationals hitters off balance, lunging out in front of his off speed stuff . He kept the ball down, with most of the swing and misses on pitches at or below the knees. It was an impressive performance, and he continues to show he belongs in this rotation.

Stefan Chrichton relieved Young in the 7th, and after a scoreless frame, came back out and surrendered a solo homerun to Juan Soto for the final run of the game. Greg Holland pitched a scoreless 9th.

A couple of points of note from the Nationals side: Former DBack closer Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless 8th inning. Also, Nationals reliever Roenis Elias was sent out to hit in the 8th inning because the Nationals were working with a short bench. (Howie Kendrick was a late scratch). I Heard after the game, he was told not to swing in two languages.

Oops.

Asked once again why his team struggles at home, and if lack of crowd energy has anything to do with it, Torey had no firm answers. He did mention they have played some games in front of sparse crowds on the road and managed to put up plenty of runs, so he didn’t feel it’s an energy problem. Whatever the problem is, it’s not going to get any easier tomorrow, as they will face off against Stephen Strasburg at 5:10 P.M.

The loss drops them 4.5 games back in the wild care and their hopes will quickly fade if they don’t right the ship over the next two days.

That was certainly among the most tumultuous of trade deadlines for the Diamondbacks in a very long time. A significant chunk of the starting rotation is different from what it was when the team started play in their last game, with the departure of Zack Greinke, and the arrivals of Mike Leake and Zac Gallen. The future is a very different place now, it seems. And there were a bunch of roster movies as well since last time, to open up a 40-man roster spot for Gallen, as well as for other movies. If you’re playing Reno Bus Bingo, here are the full details.

Recalled RHP Stefan Crichton from Triple-A Reno and optioned INF/OF Yasmany Tomás to Reno.

Reinstated INF Kevin Cron from the 10-day injured list (right elbow inflammation) and optioned him to Reno.

Transferred UTL Blake Swihart to the 60-day injured list (strained right oblique).

Designated RHP Joey Krehbiel for assignment.

I think there may be one more movie necessary, to open up a 25-man spot for Gallen, but he’s not here yet, so time enough for that. Could be Crichton going back down? Interesting to see the Tomas stay proving so short, and ultimately, fruitless. We’ll see if he is recalled when rosters expand at the beginning of next month. This will be a tough series for Arizona, with about the only saving grace being that they won’t see Max Scherzer. With Steven Strasburg and Patrick Corbin starting tomorrow and Sunday, it feels like tonight’s contest is one they need to win, to have much of a chance of taking the series. We’ll see if Alex Young can keep up the strong start to his career, or if tonight is regression night at Chase Field.

Notes.

Luke Weaver threw out to 150 feet. Should be progressing from long toss to flat ground throwing, but no time-table was given. I am personally increasingly skeptical Luke Weaver throws more than a few relief innings before the end of the season.

Taijuan Walker is a little behind Weaver, throwing out to 75 feet. I doubt we see him in the majors at all this year.

Matt Andriese threw 1/3 of an inning in the AZL. Was supposed to be 1 full inning, but he got knocked around. At least he’s healthy.

The newly acquired starters Gallen and Leake will both throw in the Philly series. For at least this time through the order and the home-stand it looks like a 6 man rotation.

The closer situation is still fluid depending on matchups. It could be any one of Archie, Yoan, Yoshi, or even Chafin depending on matchups and situation. Only thing for certain is it WON’T be Holland...

Bonus audio file!

This is a full 10-minute discussion in the dugout with Mike Hazen. Most of the questions cannot be heard that easily but you can hear Hazen’s answers pretty clearly - you may need to turn your sound up! Jack’s question was the one about Smith and Beer, and what positions they are likely to play.
