The Bullpen can’t hold the lead for Zack in his final start as a DBack

Zack Greinke’s final start in a Diamondbacks uniform was a good one. He went 5 innings, allowing just two runs on two hits, a double and a homer to Mike Tauchman in the 2nd. He struck out 7 while walking 3. He threw 15 of 20 first pitch strikes, and flummoxed Yankee hitters with his assortment of off speed pitches and well located fastballs. In short, it was a typically good Greinke start. He left the game with a 3-2 lead, but it would not last.

Rain came in the 6th inning and his day was over. News came in the top of the 7th inning that his Diamondbacks career was over. I’m feeling surprisingly sad and emotional about his departure. That’s the gut reaction to him leaving. However the haul they got for him is astonishing. But I’m not doing the trade recaps, and the show must go on.

The DBacks had 6 baserunners against Masahiro Tanaka through the first four innings, but were not able to push across any runs. However when Jarrod Dyson and Wilmer Flores singled to lead off the the 5th the Dbacks were in business, (Hat tip Nick Piecoro). David Peralta hit what should have been a single to right, but Wilmer Flores got a bad read and was out at 2nd on the fielders choice. Dyson scored though so he got an RBI. Christian Walker drew a walk, which was followed by a sinking line drive off the bat of Jake Lamb to centerfielder Aaron Hicks. Hicks made a nice running grab and came up throwing but it sailed into the DBacks dugout. Peralta came in to score as well as Flores and the Dbacks had a 3-2 lead.

After the DBacks went 1-2-3 in their half of the 6th the tarp came out for a 36 minute rain delay, and Greinke’s day was over. Yoan Lopez came out and retired all 5 batters he faced in the bottom of the 6th and 7th innings. However as the skies darkened with the Greinke trade news and the rain began to fall once again. Andrew Chafin came in with two outs in the 7th and promptly allowed a double to Mike Tauchman. Yoshihisa Hirano then came in and was greeted by an Austin Romine homer giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead.

The Yankees tacked on three more in the bottom of the 8th. Hirano gave up two more base hits to start the inning and was relieved by TJ McFarland. TJ gave up a ground out RBI, a double and a single of his own and it was a 7-3 ballgame going to the 9th.

A deflated DBacks offense went hitless in the 7th and 8th. But in the top of the 9th Tim Locastro hit his first MLB homerun over the left field wall. In landed right in front of all his family and friends who were all out in left field. But a Yankee fan threw the ball back on the field. With the score now 7-4 and a save situation Aroldis Chapman came in to close it out for New York. Adam Jones, pinch hitting for Dyson drew a walk. After Flores grounded out and Escobar struck out, David Peralta laced a double into left for his third hit of the day to drive in Jones. That got the tying run to the plate in Christian Walker who drew the two out walk. Ketel Marte came up as the go ahead run. But the rain began to fall again, perhaps the metaphor for the day, tears being shed with the departure of Greinke. Marte quickly fell behind 0-2, and before grounding out to 2nd to end the game.

With the loss the DBacks fall back below .500 to 54-55.

After the game Torey Lovullo said he found out during the 7th inning and had to leave the dugout to inform Zack, who had already been pulled from the game. He had not had a chance to work out any roster questions with Mike Hazen, and that will be something they discuss right away.

Zack took it in strike, like he always does. It is now time to move on and continue fighting for a wild card spot.

Based on today’s line-up, it does not appear that David Peralta, Jarrod Dyson or today’s starting pitcher Zack Greinke will be going anywhere. Though, of course, you never know... I’m not certain what the specifics rules are, with regard to trading a player during a game in which he is taking part. Or even during a rain delay, because the forecast for this contest gets a bit dicier as we move closer to the trade deadline at 1pm Arizona time. We’ll have to wait and see how that works out: I’m sure both teams will do what they can to get this one in. I just hope we don’t end up with Greinke going two innings, then a lengthy rain delay. Might make sense if that’s the forecast, to go with an opener like Godley?

Yesterday’s unexpected win gives Arizona the chance to go for a two-game sweep of the Yankees, which would salvage the road trip overall with a 3-3 split. It would also even their second-half record at 9-9, and give the D-backs a winning record in July (12-11). Though that’s still short of where they should be, when we plotted a road to 85 wins - according to that, they need to be at 10-8 in the second half, after this game. Personally, I think I’ve more or less written off any hopes of contention, until proven otherwise. We’ll see what trade deadline activity (or lack thereof) shows, about the opinion held by Mike Hazen and the Arizona front-office on this topic.

Business as usual, Trade Deadline blocked out as best as can. But eager for deadline to be over. It’sa built-in distraction and can cause guys to get off path. It’s Torey’s job to keep them on point. Once it passes, feels the team will have a different mind set

Mix and match on lineup. Marte scheduled rest. Walker DH, Lamb 1B. Just trying to get best matchups

Great moment for Locastro to start today with many of his family and friends in stadium. He’s starting in RF, but his family all bought tickets in LF today. Oops!

Stabilized rotation: Credit to player development. Last couple of turns 4 & 5 have been strong. Feel good about rotation now, couldn’t say that 3 weeks ago.
