It was a showdown between Zack Godley and the immortal Bartolo Colon at Chase Field tonight...

Zack Godley was the star of the show, but A.J. Pollock got the game started off on the right foot. Godley sat down the side in order via a strike out, a groundout, and a before most fans had even gotten to their seats yet, and then with two outs, Pollock smacked a home run, his 15 of a significantly shortened season, to get the Diamondbacks on the board early on. 1-0 Diamondbacks.

The Rangers would respond in the top of the second with what would turn out to be their biggest threat of the evening. After Godley got two quick outs, striking out Adrian Beltre and getting Ronald Guzman to ground out to short, Robinson Chirinos singled and Willie Calhoun drew a walk. That was as far as they got, though, after Carlos Tocci struck out to end the inning.

The Dbacks offense came back for more in the bottom of the third inning. Jon Jay singled on a line drive to start the inning. Paul Goldschmidt followed that up with a hard hit line drive that hit right off the bottom of the wall to bring him home. However, Pollock couldn’t keep it going and flew out to end the inning. 2-0 Diamondbacks

The bottom of the fourth was the killing blow. Steven Souza Jr. lead off with a walk. Eduardo Escobar flew out, but Descalso singled to move Souza to second. They both came home, thanks to a Nick Ahmed double. Two batters later, Jay brought him home for the third run of the evening. 5-0 Diamondbacks.

Meanwhile, Godley continued to excel. After the slight bump in the road in the second inning, he sat down the side in order in the third and fourth innings. He did give up a one out single in the fifth, but easily worked around it. Another 1-2-3 inning followed in the sixth. He gave up one last baserunners on a HBP in the seventh, but nothing came of it. His final line looked like: 7IP, 2 H, 0 R, 10 K, 1 BB, 1 HBP. Pretty incredible.

Arizona added one more run in the sixth, but it was just the cherry on top of a great game. TJ McFarland pitched the final two innnings. He wasn’t quite as dominate as Godley, but he held the Rangers scoreless and didn’t give them a chance to make things interesting. Final score, 6-0 Dbacks

One last thing of note. Zack Godley is the first pitcher since 1974 to strike out the first batter he faced in the seven innings he pitched. H/t to GuruB for bringing it to my attention and to Zack Buchanan of the Athletic for tweeting it out in the first place!

While tonight’s Diamondbacks game wasn’t quite the beat down that the Nationals put on the Mets, it was a fantastic pitching performance from Zack Godley, and a solid performance from the offense.

Godley was just straight up dominate. He went seven innings, and at no point did it seem like the Ranger’s offense stood a chance. Ten strikeouts, one walk, and only two hits. He sat down the side in order in the first, third, fourth, and sixth. Only in the second did the Rangers even get a runner to second. Fantastic. TJ McFarland replaced him in the eighth, and closed out the game while preserving the shut out.

On the offensive side of things, they were just as good, though on a night where eight other teams reached six runs, it seems almost pedestrian! Jon Jay, AJ Pollock, Paul Goldschmidt, and Nick Ahmed all got RBI tonight. Ahmed got two and Pollock’s came on a home run. Full recap to follow as soon as I make it home from the ball park!

Quite the day of flux for Arizona, especially on the pitching front, and particularly for bullpen. In case you lost track, or weren’t paying attention, here’s a quick summary of everything that went down today, time-stamped per the official announcement emails:

11:34 am. The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired RHP Brad Ziegler from the Miami Marlins for RHP Tommy Eveld. To make room for Ziegler on the 40-man roster, the D-backs transferred RHP Shelby Miller (right elbow inflammation) to the 60-day disabled list.

1:49 pm. The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired LHP Jake Diekman from the Texas Rangers for RHP Wei-Chieh Huang and a player to be named later and designated LHP Jorge De La Rosa for assignment.

2:53 pm. The Arizona Diamondbacks placed LHP Andrew Chafin on the Paternity Leave List and recalled RHP Silvino Bracho from Triple-A Reno.

If you’re playing along at home with your Milton Bradley 25-man Roster Board, you’ll have noticed that we still need to make one further move - taking someone off that 25-man roster, to make room for Ziegler when he arrived on Thursday. That’ll be an interesting decision, and there have been a number of possible suggestions as to who the odd man out might be. Someone with options would be the most obvious choice, unless the team wants to cut ties more permanently with a player. John Ryan Murphy is one possibility, considering he has been wretched at a historical level this month; newly-acquired reliever Matt Andriese is another, after a bumpy start to his time with the Diamondbacks. We’ll see on Thursday.

For now, with all the excitement out of the way, and fresh arms in the shape of Diekman and Bracho available for tonight’s contest, we get another crack at seeing if we can take over the lead of the NL West. It didn’t go quite as planned last night: the Brewers did their bit, beating the Dodgers, but neither the D-backs nor the Rockies were able to take advantage, both being beaten. So, everything effectively resets for a do-over this evening. If the Dodgers lose, and we can win, we’ll be in first place. But we could end the night anywhere from first to third in the division, depending on how results go. We face Bartolo Colon tonight, so that’ll be fun regardless. But a win would definitely be helpful.
