In a game highlighted by the pitching staff getting out of sticky situations, the offense came from either the most unlikely or obvious source, depending on your point of view :-)

The Diamondbacks had a couple of false starts this evening before they got the offense going tonight. They wasted a one out double from Paul Goldschmidt in the first, and then again wasted a single from John Ryan Murhpy and a walk from Nick Ahmed. Things went better in the third inning. Jon Jay lead the inning off by doing what he does best and getting hit by a pitch. Paul Goldschmidt flew out for the first out but moved him to second. Jake Lamb followed that up with an RBI double to break the shut out. He was then in turn brought home by another double, this time off the bat of David Peralta. 2-0 Dbacks

Meanwhile, Zack Godley was effective, but sloppy. He gave up a single to Derek Dietrich on the first pitch of the game, but got Brian Anderson to ground into a 5-4-3 double play in the next at bat. The inning extended again, though, when he gave up a walk to Justin Bour. Starlin Castro grounded out to end the first before any damage was actually inflicted.

The bottom halves of the second and third were similar. A lead off double in the second from the bat of JT Realmuto was erased thanks to him trying to extend it to a triple. Miguel Rojas then reached on a Nick Ahmed error. Godley extinguished that as well by getting a fly out and a ground out for the last two outs of the inning.

He wasn’t quite as lucky in the bottom of the fourth. JT Riddle (no word on if he is any relation to Tom) lead off the inning with a single. Miguel Rojas moved him to second on a ground out and Riddle then went to third on a single Lewis Brinson, who took second on the throw. That set the table or Bryan Haloday to get bring home Riddle with a ground out and put the Marlins on the board. 2-1 Dbacks

Arizona answered right back in the top of the fifth. Lamb drew a one out walk and Peralta followed that with a single. Ketel Marte struck out for the second out, bringing John Ryan Murphy, who I might start calling The Outlaw, because whether or not he is a hero or a villain seems to depend on who you ask and what stories you hear, to the plate. This is one of the stories that paints him as a hero, though, because he dropped a double just inside the third baseline to bring home both Lamb and Peralta, extending the lead by two. 4-2 Dbacks

The Diamondbacks would need that run, as Godley failed to have a shut down inning in the last half of the fifth. It was going smoothly, needing ten pitches to get the first two outs. But as the radio team was talking about Godley’s chance for his first 1-2-3 inning of the night, Starlin Castro put a fly ball over the wall in left for a solo home run. 4-2 AZ

Both teams were quiet in the sixth. Dyson, Godley, and Jay went down in order for the Diamondbacks. Marlins didn’t accomplish much more. However, a lead off single from Rojas was the end of the road for Godley, before Salas sat down the three batters he faced to end the sixth.

John Ryan Murphy continued his good night in the seventh. After a walk, an error, and an intentional walk loaded the bases, he brought home his third RBI and the Dbacks’ final run of the night with a sac fly. Archie Bradly gave up a single and a walk before the second error committed by the Diamondbacks tonight brought home the Marlins last run. 5-3 Diamondbacks

Yoshi Hirano appeared tonight, and he extended his scoreless innings streak, though not without some drama of his own. He loaded the bases thanks to a HBP with one out and then back to back two out singles. A Bour flyout to center ended the inning without any runs crossing the plate, however. Brad Boxberger pitched the ninth and got his 18th save of the season

An all around good game for the Diamondbacks with both the pitching and hitting getting it done. On offense, John Ryan Murphy was the man, to much rejoicing or chagrin, depending on which side of our fan base you happen to be on :-) He drove in three RBI on the night, thanks to a two RBI double and a bases loaded sac fly. Also joining him in driving the offense were Jake Lamb and David Peralta, who had back to back RBI doubles in the third inning.

The pitching was sloppy but got the needed result. He ended up going 5+ innings and failed to sit the side down in order in any of them. However, he only gave up two runs, so he did pitch around the trouble he created for himself. It was a similar story for the A Bullpen tonight, as well. Bradley struck out the side in his inning, but gave up a run on a fielder’s choice. Hirano loaded the bases, but managed to get out of it with his scoreless inning streak intact.

In the end though, it was good enough to even the series at a win apiece. Full recap to follow shortly!

Firstly, your daily roster update - or perhaps it just seems that way... Braden Shipley gets a quick hook after an ugly outing yesterday, where he allowed four runs in a 38-pitch eighth inning, the eventual margin of our defeat. Having thrown 48 pitches in total, he wasn’t going to be any use for the next couple of days, so gets churned back to Reno for the fresh arm of Jimmie Sherfy. He spent a week with the team already in mid-May, appearing in three games and tossing a pair of hitless innings, with two walks an a strikeout. This may be a short stay for Jimmie, with the team needing to make another roster move tomorrow, so that Robbie Ray can rejoin the rotation.

Godley has a 2.95 ERA over his last three outings, and was one out short of giving the team three quality starts in a row. This comes as a surprise to me, because it feels like Godley has been really struggling of late, to the point of there being a legitimate discussion as to whether he or Clay Buchholz would lose their spot on Ray’s return. That has obviously been tabled for a bit, given Buchholz going on the disabled list, but Godley’s recent outings have probably deserved to be filed under “ugly but effective”. Kinda like Godley himself. :) He has struck out a solid 21 over 18.1 innings in those three games, though eight walks and a pair of hit batters is rather too many free passes.

Like all of Arizona’s pitchers, he has been helped by Arizona’s defense. By Defensive Runs Above Average (Def), the D-backs are second in the majors, at +20.2, behind only the Cubs (21.9). That’s quite a turnaround, considering that last year they were well below average, coming in 24th at -19.7 runs, and were thereabout in 2016 too (-19.5). One of these (off) days, I’m going to have to break down this striking improvement by position and see where the drivers are. To this point, the team is on pace to be the second-best in franchise history defensively. The projected figure of +42.0 would trail only the 2011 D-backs, who were a startling +73.6. Maybe those “fundamentals” aren’t so bad after all...

Also, this is important:
