The Dbacks spoiled the return of Madison Bumgarner, despite a night of less than stellar pitching.

Both teams were quiet in the first. The only player to get on base was Paul Goldschmidt with a two out single in the top of the first off of Madison Bumgarner. It was a different story in the top of the second. Ketel Marte lead off the inning with his tenth double of the season. Chris Owings immediately followed that up with his eighth double, bringing Marte home. Next up, Deven Marrero popped out to first, but Owings was able to move to third, and then be brought home on the next at bat thanks to a single off the bat of Kristopher Negron. That was all they managed that inning, as Corbin sacrificed Negron to second, but Ahmed failed to bring him home. 2-0 Diamondbacks

They put together another good threat next inning. David Peralta and Goldy both got singles to start the inning and put runners on the corners with no one out. They failed to convert it, though, after John Ryan Murphy grounded into a fieldder’s choice that saw Peralta thrown out at home and Marte followed it with a 5-3 double play to end the inning.

Meanwhile, Patrick Corbin was cruising through the Giants lineup. He sat down the first 11 Giants he faced, including three strike outs, and he didn’t even allow a ball out of the infield until Buster Posey lined out to right field for the second out in the fourth inning. Andrew McCutcheon broke it up before anything really started, though, when he got a single to shallow center right after that. Corbin induced a ground ball from Evan Longoria to end the fourth and keep the momentum going.

The fifth inning saw the Diamondbacks fail to capitalize on another opportunity. Ahmed singled with one out and Goldy hit a ground rule double with two outs, his third!! hit of the game, putting runners on second and third. Murphy grounded out to end the inning without any runs scoring

In the bottom of the fifth, the wheels almost came off, but Corbin managed to hold it together. He allowed the first four hitters to reach on a double, double/RBI, single, walk. Then he put on a clinic, striking out Bumgarner, Gorkys Hernandez, and Buster Posey in a row to end the inning and limit the Giants to only one run, despite having the bases loaded and nobody out. 2-1 Diamondbacks

Bumgarner sat the side down in order in the sixth, but that was it for him. Mark Melancon came in for the seventh, and it was a bit of an adventure. He struck out Patrick Corbin on a swing at a wild pitch, and Corbin started towards first. Posey threw it away, though, so Corbin was able to make it to second. Nothing came of it, but I just feel like any time the pitcher makes it to second on a strike out, it should be recorded for posterity.

The seventh inning was another case of letting the Giants get way to close for comfort. Corbin walked Crawford to start the inning, but got Sandoval to line out to right fielder Owings. That was the end of the road for Corbin, and he was replaced by Andrew Chafin. Chafin put away the one batter he faced, but once Pence was announced as a pinch hitter, he was lifted for Yoshi Hirano. Hirano struggle. He walked Pence and Gorkys Hernandez to load the bases with two outs. Once again, Posey failed with the bases loaded and flew out to end the inning. Still 2-1 Diamondbacks

Archie Bradley wasn’t quite his sharp self in the eighth, but he made it work. He stranded a one out single and a two out walks by getting Sandoval to ground out.

In the ninth, the Diamondbacks added a bit of insurance. Owings led off with a single, but was thrown out at second on a botched bunt by Marrero. Dyson walked. Jake Lamb pinch hit for Bradley. He singled to right field and Marrerro came home. That was all they got, after Ahmed popped out and Peralta lined out, ending the inning. 3-1 Diamondbacks

Continuing the theme of getting out of jams for Dbacks pitching tonight, Boxberger didn’t have the best inning either. He got the first out, but gave up a double to Alan Hanson. Two batters later, Hanson came home after Posey battled a six pitch at bat into a single. Andrew McCutcheon got a single of his own to put the winning run on base for Evan Longoria. That winning run stayed put, though, as Longoria ended the game on a ground out to short.

The Diamondbacks got the luck of the draw of being the first team that got to face the Giants with Madison Bumgarner. He pitched pretty much like classic Bumgarner, but the Diamondbacks were able to get on the board and keep the lead, despite some rough moments from Diamondback pitching tonight.

A night with some missed opportunities for the offense, with two RBI hits in the second being the difference for the majority of the game. They added on in the ninth, with an RBI single off the bat of pinch hitter Jake Lamb for a little insurance.

On the pitching side, it was more a story of getting out of tough jams unscathed. In the fifth inning, Corbin allowed the first four runners to reach, but followed that up with three straight strikeouts to keep the damage to one. In the seventh, Corbin, Chafin, and Hirano combined to load the bases, before Hirano was able to get Posey to pop out and end the threat, and in the eighth, Bradley put two on before he was able to shut down the inning and keep the Giants from scoring. Add to that Boxberger allowing the winning run to reach in the ninth, it was not the best night for Diamondbacks pitching. In the end, a lot of bending, but no breaking, and the Dbacks were able to even the series at one. Full recap to follow shortly

Last night the Diamondbacks finally became the 29th MLB team this season to concede double-digits in a game, leaving only the St. Louis Cardinals without such a contest this year. It ended a streak of 66 regular season games allowing fewer than ten runs for the D-backs, dating back to two consecutive contests against the Marlins on September 22-23 last year - one a 13-11 win, the other a 6-12 loss. However, it was some way short of the franchise record, as in exactly half of it. For the D-backs went 132 games in a row without allowing ten runs, from July 2011 though the following June. Hopefully, a new streak will start tonight for the Diamondbacks!

They do have a fresh bullpen arm, with Jake Barrett having been taxied back down to the Aces, and Silvino Bracho making his eleven billionth (approximately) trip on the bus from Reno. I’m not exaggerating much: I believe this is Bracho’s sixteenth stint with the major-league club all told, since his debut on August 30, 2015. His numbers this year have actually been very good, albeit in a small sample-size. Silvino has allowed one earned run over 8.1 innings of work, with a K:BB ratio of 12:4 (albeit with three hit batters, perhaps making him the team’s designated enforcer!). We’ll see how long this stint lasts: with Randall Delgado heading on a rehab assignment soon, that might be the next bullpen roster change.

Tonight is the 2018 MLB debut of Madison Bumgarner, and I’m sure the Giants will be delighted to have him back. They have weathered the storm of his absence better than might have been expected, and welcome his return just 1.5 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks for first place in the NL West. That has been with a pretty shaky rotation, whose ERA ranks 23rd in the majors, at 4.59, despite the benefits of a pitcher-friendly park like AT&T. Let’s not forget, he can hit, too. Indeed, he’s one of the best hitting players at his position in baseball. His 17 home-runs lead all active pitchers, and since the mound was lowered in 1968, trails only Carlos Zambrano’s 24. Keep it in the park, please, Patrick...
