Perhaps moral has improved enough, the beatings can cease?

The Diamondbacks took on the Reds tonight looking to follow up yesterday’s offensive explosion with their first series win since their undefeated streak ended so long ago. It didn’t start off too great. Zack Godley started the game off by giving up a lead off double to Alex Blandino. Tucker Barnhart struck out, but Joey Votto singled, moving Blandino to third. A grown man who goes by the name Scooter grounded out for the second out, but Blandino was able to score. Godley walked Eugenio Suarez, and Butcher came out for a mound visit. Whatever he said worked, and Godley got Scott Schebler to strike out swinging, ending the threat, with only a 1-0 deficit.

Arizona came back right away in the bottom of the inning. Jake Lamb took a two out walk, bringing up Daniel Descalso. He took a 2-1 fastball and put it in the right field bleachers, taking the lead for the home team. 2-1 Diamondbacks

In the third, Jarrod Dyson lead off with a walk. Ketel Marte brought him home with a double, and Marte went to third on the throw home. Jake Lamb came up and hit a sac fly to bring Marte home. Daniel Descalso got his second hit of the night, a single, but Peralta grounded into a double play to end the inning. 4-1 Dbacks

Meanwhile, Godley had settled down nicely. He sat down the side in order in the second on two flyouts and a strike out. In the third, he gave up a couple of two out singles, but worked around them.

He started off the fourth by losing control of a pitch that hit Scott Schebler in the knee, but after a brief delay, Schebler stayed in the game. Godley struck out Adam Duvall and Luis Castillo before giving up a single to Billy Hamilton but Blandino grounded into a force out to end the inning.

Much of the same in the fifth inning. He gave up a lead off walk to Barnhart, but got Votto to GIDP and Scooter Gennett also grounded out to end the inning. His final blemish of the evening was a solo home run in the sixth, but that was it. He ended the day with a line of 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, and just the one home run. That would have been a great line for him regardless, but even better considering that he started the night with such a rough first inning.

The Diamondbacks added a fifth run in the fifth on a fielding error to give them their final tally for the evening. For the first time in what seems like a long time, the A-Bullpen of Hirano, Bradley, and Boxberger came on and each pitched a clean inning to close it out. 5-2 Dbacks

I hesitate to say the Diamondbacks’ offense actually showed up today, as they only managed four hits today, but they took advantage of every opportunity they had. They ended up with five runs, one unearned, all of them off Reds’ starter Luis Castillo. I would have liked to see a bit more production beyond the four hits they got, but they added in four walks and made it work.

On the flip side, the pitchers, lead by Zach Godley, did a great job. Godley struggled in the first, throwing a lot of pitches, but got out of it with only run and really settled down, managing to go six innings and only gave up two runs. The A-Bullpen came in and did their thing in almost a month, with Brad Boxberger coming in for the first time in almost a week and getting the save. Full recap to follow shortly!

Paul Goldschmidt is not in the Diamondbacks’ starting line-up tonight, for only the second time this season. The previous such occasion came against the Nationals in Washington on April 28, a game the Diamondbacks ended up winning 4-3. Though even there, Goldy ended up pinch-hitting in the eighth inning: we’ll see if this “day off” ends up being a true day off, or if he’s called into action. It’ll probably depend on the game situation: I’m hoping the offensive surge we saw last night from the D-backs, with a season-high 12 runs, is maintained this evening, and Paul can settled back in the dugout with his feet up. Elsewhere, Alex Avila starts in place of John Ryan Murphy, Guess how Twitter reacted? :)

Hopefully, on the other hand, the D-backs’ pitchers will not concede 16 hits, because that’s not typically a recipe for success... Over the past decade in MLB, teams allowing exactly 16 hits are 51-509 in regulation. Indeed, in franchise history, there have only been four such wins where Arizona allowed more. Our record is a startling nineteen - any guesses as to in which ballpark that took place? No prizes if you said Coors Field. Sept 22, 2013 saw Patrick Corbin and six relievers allow 19 hits and four walks, including five hits and four runs in the ninth. Yet Arizona still beat Colorado 13-9, as the Diamondbacks got the same number of knocks and five walks. It’s the only MLB game since 2008 where both sides had 19+ hits.

I’d feel more comfortable if it wasn’t Zack Godley on the mound. Godley’s starts have been a struggle of late - more “in spite of” than “because of” - but the last one, in Milwaukee, was the first time the wheels completely fell off. He walked six batters while retiring only ten, and over his last six starts he has 21 BB in only 32.1 innings, helping lead to opponents getting on-base at a .390 clip. While his immediate spot in the rotation is secure, there will be spots needing to be freed up for the returns of Shelby Miller and Robbie Ray. Matt Koch and Clay Buchholz are still the most likely losers. But if Godley has many more outings like last time, his name is going to end up in that conversation.
