An early surge of runs was more than enough for the Diamondbacks to take the final game of the series against Philly

So you come back to the finale of a weird wraparound series and you find some weirdness. Like. Goldy isn’t there, and why the f*** is Chris Hermann batting leadoff? I have three straight Monday recaps off and this is how you repay me?

Of course, like a minute after typing the Hermann thing, he hit a leadoff Home Run. I’ll keep it in the recap because I enjoy ironic comeuppance as much as anybody.

In the following inning, Daniel Descalso singled home Chris Owings to make the score 2-0 Diamondbacks off of Phillies starter Nick Pivetta.

For his next trick, Pivetta walked Jeff Mathis, Zack Greinke, and Chris Hermann in succession to score another run. There could have been more, what with the bases loaded and nobody outs, but Nick Ahmed decided to come up hacking against a guy who hadn’t shown any control and hit into a double play. Ah well.

Pivetta loaded the bases to start the 3rd, and Descalso had another hit, this one scoring two runs, to make it 5-0. Rey Fuentes followed with an RBI single of his own to bring the score to 6-0 (Tacos in the before times, basically) Pivetta only lasted 2 and 2/3rds innings against a Diamondbacks lineup sans Paul Goldschmidt.

Greinke had a rocky first frame, but was clean in Innings two through four. Inning five, however, was very rocky. He allowed a run on a Daniel Nava RBI single and loaded the bases with two outs, but got out of it.

Silvino Bracho came in for two innings of scoreless relief. Rubby De La Rosa needed only 9 pitches to get three outs in the 8th. T.J. McFarland pitched a clean 9th and hey it’s a game and series win!

No Goldschmidt. No Drury. Herrmann batting lead-off, ahead of Ahmed. Bottom half of Descalso (hitting .231), Fuentes (.241), Mathis (.165) and the pitcher's spot. Insert paragraph complaining about Torey Lovullo clearly not wanting to win the game here...

But, really: if you're going to give Goldschmidt a game off, doing so with the team's Opening Day starter on the mound, and going up against the worst team in major-league baseball is as good a day as any, I'd say. But it would be interesting to do a spreadsheet and figure out what the average runs per game scored is, when Player X has been in the starting line-up this year. I just need to figure out how to do it in Google Sheets. There will probably be pivot tables involved. So, don't hold your breath.

Greinke took his first loss of the month in his last start, but that did come against the Rockies at Coors Field: if he'd got the same run support the starting pitchers did in the other two games, he'd have got a W, rather than coming out on the wrong end of an rather unlucky 4-3 loss. I'd say that allowing four runs over 7.1 innings at Coors probably should count as a quality start. It has actually been a while since Greinke has had one of those: his outing in Miami on the first day of the month, in fact. Since then, his three starts have seen an ERA of 3.50, but he has fallen short of six innings twice, and the Coors game was the other. K:BB of 19:3 over 18 innings, so I'm predicting this afternoon ends the streak.
