Well, it wasn’t actually the difference maker, but it was still really cool, okay?

The Mets were the first to strike tonight against Zack Greinke and the Diamondbacks. Neil Walker lead off the second inning with an infield single, and he then was moved to third on a Wilmer Flores ground rule double. Greinke was able to get an out, thanks to Lucas Duda striking out. Rene Rivera walked to load the bases. Curtis Granderson walked to push in a run and keep the bases loaded. After that, Greinke shut them down and got two more strike outs to end the inning.

The Dbacks answered back in the third inning, and it was the bottom of the line up that got things moving. Daniel Descalso lead the inning off with a walk, and went to third on a Jeff Mathis double. Greinke popped out to foul territory for the first out. Gregor Blanco singled and drove home both of them to give the Dbacks the lead. Ahmed, who inexplicably, to me at least, was batting in second and not eighth or ninth, flew out for the second out. Tommy Milone walked Goldschmidt intentionally, bringing up Owings. Owings singled, bringing home Blanco and sending Goldy to third.

Then it got fun. While Tomas was batting, Owings took off. They had him dead to rights, but he managed to get caught in a run down. While they were distracted, Goldy hesitated, but took off for home. Thanks to a bad throw he was able to make it standing up. Owings was thrown out at third, but the lead had been secured. 4-1 Diamondbacks

The Mets got one of them back in the fifth. Curtis Granderson lead things off, hitting the second pitch of the bat into the bleachers for a solo home run. 4-2 Diamondbacks

Yasmany got that run back in the sixth with a solo home run of his own. This time it was a pool shot, extending the lead a bit more. 5-2 Diamondbacks

And it was a good thing too, in retrospect. Greinke went back out for the ninth inning, which didn’t seem like that bad of an idea at the time. Overall he had pitched fairly well, seven strikeouts with only two walks, and he was only at 93 pitches. However, he quickly gave up a single to Duda and then a homer to Rene Rivera, cutting the lead to only one. Greinke did get the next two out, but that was the end of the road. Chacin was brought in for the last out, which he recorded. 5-4 Diamondbacks

Bradley and Rodney took it from there, both throwing perfect innings. With that, the Dbacks secured the series win, and the Mets continued their losing streak.

The night was defined by one big inning for the Diamondbacks . They struck hard in the third inning, putting up four runs, and putting a decent amount of breathing room between them and the Mets early, and it was a lot of fun in the process. It all got started with the bottom of the order, with Descalso, Mathis, Ahmed, and Blanco getting on base. The best part, though, was when Goldschmidt and Owings pulled off a double steal. When Goldschmidt was on third base. And stole home. It was great.

On the flip side, Grienke wasn’t great, but he was serviceable. He scattered four runs over six and two thirds innings. His biggest issues came, once again from the long ball. He was able to work around them for the most part, however, and left the game with the lead. The bullpen finished it off, and kept things where they were to secure the series win. Full recap to follow.

Has Zack finally figured it out? He has given the D-backs five consecutive quality starts, with an ERA of 2.06 - and perhaps most impressively, a K:BB ratio of 44:4 over those 35 innings of work. No Arizona pitcher has managed more than five QS in a row since the end of the 2014 campaign: Josh Collmenter had a streak of seven to finish off that season. After that, we've had Corbin with a couple of five-game runs of quality starts, in both 2015 and 2017, and now Greinke's ongoing set. But if you throw in six-plus strikeouts per game, as Zack has managed, you've then got to go back to Dan Haren in June + July 2009, to find a longer run.

Left-hander up for the Mets, which may play into why Jake Lamb and David Peralta are sitting, though the team may also be being cautious with Peralta. Lamb is 7-for-42 against southpaws this season, though has still been taking his share of walks. That helps get his OPS up to .557, but that's not good enough to be considered better than Descalso for tonight's game. I imagine we may well see Lamb off the bench later on if necessary. Interesting to see Ahmed batting #2 in the order, just behind Blanco. It'll only be the second time this year Ahmed has started a game higher than seventh in the order (the other being May 6 in Colorado).

If the team would indulge me and score some runs slightly earlier in the game than last night, it would be appreciated. Things to do, y'know.
