This was a fun game

Shelby Miller retired the Padres in order through the first two innings, but let them take advantage in the third. Eric Aybar lead off the inning with a walk, and he was moved to second on a Travis Jankowski single. Their pitcher, Jarrod Cosart, bunted unsuccessfully, with Chris Iannetta throwing Aybar out at third. Miguel Margot made the second out when he flew out to Jake Lamb, but Wil Myers singled, scoring Jankowski. Miller shut it down after that Yangervis Solarte to pop out to end the inning. 1-0 Padres

The Diamondbacks wasted no time in answering back in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, David Peralta singled and Goldy walked. Lamb struck out for the second out in the inning. Tomas singled, loading the bases. That brought up Drury. He walked, bringing home a run, on four straight pitches. Turns out there was a reason for that, as Cosart left the game due to injury. A later report says it was due to a right hamstring injury, so he’ll probably be out for a little bit.

Craig Stammen came in to replace him and face Chris Owings. Owings dropped down a bunt back to the mound. Stammen threw it away, which allowed Paul Goldschmidt and Yasmany Tomas to score. Stammen recovered and got Chris Iannetta to strike out, but the Dbacks were just getting started. 3-1 Diamondbacks

They didn’t wait around either, jumping right back into the swing of things, pun intended, in the top of the fifth. Again with one out, Pollock walked. Peralta popped out for the second out, bringing Goldy to the plate. Goldy walked, and, during the at bat, Pollock stole second. Lamb singled Pollock home, still with two out. Yasmany Tomas was up next. He hit the first pitch he saw out to extend the lead even further. 7-1 Diamondbacks

While all this was happening, Miller was absolutely cruising. After giving up the one run, he only allowed three more base runners on the night. He was pretty routinely hitting upper 90’s with his fastball, and just generally making the Padres look foolish up there. Obvious caveat of who his opponent was, but this is definitely something I look forward to seeing more of in the future.

The offense added a couple more in both the eighth and ninth, padding the lead even further. Of note there, Chris Iannetta hit his second home run of the season, Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a two run triple, and Shelby Miller himself got two walks and had some aggressive, heads up base running when he went first to third on a throwing error.

The Padres did add one in the ninth, but it didn’t really matter much tonight with them being down by ten and all. Dbacks easily take the game, and start the series off on the right foot.

A very nice game both offensively and defensively for the Diamondbacks tonight. The offense put a beat down on the Padres pitching tonight, putting up crooked numbers in both the fourth and fifth innings. The two big at bats this evening came from Chris Owings and Yasmany Tomas. Owings bunted with the bases loaded and two runs scored after pitcher Chris Stammen threw the ball away. Tomas’s big hit came in the form of an actual big hit, a three run home run in the fifth, to help put the game far out of reach. To finish it off, they added two more in both the eighth and ninth

As good as the offense was, Shelby Miller might have been even better. His final line was 7.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, and 5 K’s. Of course the caveat of he was facing the Padres is important here, but he didn’t just pitch well, he dominated. Even late in the game, he was able to reach back and get in the high 90’s with his fastball. It was a far cry from his game in San Diego around this time last year when he grazed the mound with his pitching hand and started his decent into terrible. Full, happy recap to follow!

Remember when the Padres used to be relevant? Kids, ask your parents! For it has now been over a decade since San Diego last appeared in the post-season, back at the end of 2006. The following year was likely the last time we paid them much attention, as us, the Rockies and the Padres were covered by a game for the top three spots and Colorado beat San Diego in a one-game playoff. The Padres are still waiting for Matt Holliday to touch home-plate. Over the nine seasons since then, they've managed no titles, no wild-card slots and one season higher than third, with this looking likely to be their seventh consecutive losing campaign.

It's certainly a different approach in San Diego, after the spending spree before the 2015 campaign failed miserably to buy success [a lesson sadly lost on Dave Stewart and D-backs management, the following winter]. Now, they have a farm system regarded as among the top three in baseball, along with the Yankees and Braves, though the talent mostly appears to be a long way from the majors at this point. They also ended up with the players taken in the first 3 slots of the Rule 5 draft this winter - infielder Allen Cordoba, reliever Miguel Diaz, and catcher Luis Torrens - though none of them are in the starting line-up this evening.

But it may be an ugly couple of seasons for Padres' fans, before this starts to show fruit. For the last team to carry three Rule 5 picks for an entire campaign were the 2003 Tigers, and they went 43-119. While no-one is expecting San Diego to be quite that bad this year, this is the kind of team everyone else in the West should be pounding on a regular basis to pad their records. That said, so far they are 5-5 against the West, having won series against both the Giants and Rockies, so it would not behoove the D-backs to think they just need to show up to collect three victories.
