Jean Segura was fantastic as usual, homering twice in as many days to lead the offense to victory.

Jean Segura coming into this year had 23 career MLB homers. He had shown some power his rookie year, smashing 12 en route to an All-Star appearance. His off the field struggles are well documented, and his success for the D-backs this year is a lone bright spot. An argument could be made that Segura probably won't match these numbers next year and a trade would do wonders to rebuild a dilapidated farm system, but in the meantime let's just enjoy what he's doing out there while we can.

Rubby de la Rosa was called upon to start the game, in an effort to acclimate him back into the starting rotation before the start of next year. That experiment might come to a close after his last two appearances. Rubby had little command of any of his pitches, showing the type of rust you would expect someone to have after not pitching in a couple months. Charlie Blackmon greeted fans immediately, crushing the 8th pitch of the at-bat down the right field line for a home run 1-0. DJ LeMahieu singled, but Arenado struck out for the first out. Carlos Gonzalez walked on 4 straight balls to put a runner in scoring position, but a Mark Reynolds grounder put runners on the corners with 2 outs. Gerardo Parra walked, loading the bases and bringing out Chip Hale, who left Rubby in there to face Tom Murphy, and it paid off, as he struck him out to end the threat. 39 pitches and lots of balls is not what you want to see from a guy coming off an elbow injury.

The D-backs responded in their bottom half of the inning, and as usual it was Jean Segura (hit number 1!) blasting one to left field for another leadoff home run, his 2nd in as many days. 2 quick outs followed, but Jake Lamb kept things going with a walk and Yasmany Tomas doubled to center, driving home the run and giving the D-backs a 2-1 lead.

Rubby came on again in the top of the 2nd and immediately walked Descalso. Hale had rightfully seen enough and pulled Rubby in favor of Randall Delgado who immediately got 3 outs. The D-backs kinda threatened in their half of the 2nd, with a Segura single (hit number 2!) moving Tuffy into scoring position, but Owings struck out to end the inning.

Braden Shipley came on to relieve Delgado in an uneventful 3rd inning, with each team trading leadoff hits, Arenado with a double and Goldy with a single, but doing nothing with them. The 4th was worse, with each team going down in order.

Shipley gave up two hits in the 5th, sandwiched between a double play ball and a force out, pitching his 3rd scoreless frame. The D-backs responded in a big way, scoring 5 runs and blowing the game open. Shipley led things off with a single, and Jean Segura homered (his 3rd hit!) to left, clearing the wall by a couple rows. Chris Owings doubled, and Jake Lamb reached on a fielder's choice and error, scoring Owings. After a Tomas fly out, Drury doubled to left scoring Lamb. Brito followed suit, singling to right field and giving the D-backs the 5th run of the inning 7-1.

Shipley came out in the 6th on a roll and continued that, getting a double play to erase a leadoff single. But a Tom Murphy walk preceded a Descalso homer, cutting the lead to 7-3. The D-backs kept on hitting, with who else starting the rally than Jean Segura, who singled (hit number 4!) in front of an Owings homer, 9-3. They had a chance at more, with a runner reaching 3rd and two outs, but Brito popped out to end the inning.

The 7th saw Shipley falter and the Rockies capitalized. Blackmon tripled to right, LeMahieu singled driving home a run. Arenado followed with a double to CF and after a pitching change for Edwin Escobar, CarGo singled to left, scoring another run. Barrett replaced Escobar and got a Reynolds lineout but Parra hit a sac fly to left, scoring Arenado and cutting the lead to 9-6. The D-backs loaded the bases in their half of the inning, and scored a run on a wild pitch but Lamb grounded out to end things at 10-6.

Burgos was excellent in the top of the 8th, getting two strikeouts and allowing no hits. Brandon Drury homered in the 8th and three D-backs reached to give Jean Segura a chance at 6 hits, but he struck out on the 11th pitch of the at-bat. Oh well. Daniel Hudson came on in the 9th and allowed runners to reach 1st and 3rd, but struck out Parra to end the game and give the D-backs their first series sweep at home this year.

Double-plus tacos last night, for the second consecutive game. First time the D-backs have managed to score more than 10 runs two contests in a row - the last time was clubbing the Phillies 13-3 and 13-1 on August 10-11 last season. I wouldn't expect it again tonight, as the team has never managed to score greater than 10 in three consecutive games. If they do manage it, however, the woeful Rockies pitching staff would be the best chance we're likely to have. The team hasn't scored 34 runs in a three-game series since the very end of the 2002 season, when they drubbed - O HAI! - the woeful Rockies pitching staff 8-6, 17-8 and 11-8.

You won't be surprised to learn that the D-backs offense has delivered double-tacos against no other team more than the Rockies. Of the 234 times in franchise history, they have reached double-digits, a full 39 or one-sixth, have been against Colorado. Compare and contrast the numbers for the rest of the National League West, whom they face as often. 18 for Los Angeles, 20 for San Diego and just 17 for San Francisco. In other words, we've reached ten runs against the Rockies more often than any other two sides in the NL West, combined. And if you go higher, the spread sharpens. We've had as many 15+ run games vs. Colorado as everyone else in the West combined [never managed more than 12 vs. the Padres]

Of course, it's a double-edged sword, not least because of half those games taking place in Denver. The Diamondbacks have allowed 10+ runs on 224 occasions. The Rockies are good for the most, 31 of those, but the game is narrower: 17 for the Dodgers, 23 for the Padres and 20 for the Giants. Still, it's safe to say that the Diamondbacks have both scored and allowed more runs per game against the Rockies than any other franchise. So, you should probably be taking the over for tonight's contest too!
