Robbie Ray was excellent as he faced off against Bartolo Colon in New York.

Going into today's start, Bartolo Colon had pitched in 498 career games and beaten every current team at least once except for one other team. That other team? The Diamondbacks. The 2016 team looked to keep that streak going and started out the game in excellent fashion.

Jean Segura started things off with a leadoff double to right field and Michael Bourn bunted to the pitcher, beating the throw and putting the D-backs in a prime scoring situation with runners on the corners and Paul Goldschmidt at the plate. But like most good things that happen this season, it was squandered away. Bourn was picked off 1st and got into a rundown between 1st and 2nd. The Mets did their best to help out, allowing Bourn to take second easily. But Segura was jumpy at 3rd, and a sharp throw easily had him picked off for the 1st out. Goldy and Lamb struck out and that was the inning. Disappointing.

Thankfully Robbie Ray didn't care and pumped strikes all night long. His pitch count was under control, and the contact was weak. He had a no-hitter through 3 and finished his 7 innings of work giving up just three hits, with two of those in the 4th inning. He struck out 4 and threw a very efficient 98 pitches.

The offense did just enough to support Robbie, giving him a lead as he left. In the 3rd, Segura again reached base on a single. As Bourn struck out, Jean stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd after an arrant throw escaped Travis D'Arnaud. Goldy came in clutch this time around, smacking a single into left to give the D-backs a 1-0 lead.

The D-backs again scored in the 8th inning against a familiar face in Addison Reed. Jean Segura continued his solid day with a line drive double to lead off the inning. Bourn sac bunted, moving Segura up a base and Goldy hit a ball into foul territory, which was deep enough to score Segura and give the D-backs an insurance run 2-0.

Enrique Burgos did his job in the 8th, retiring the side in order. With a 2-run lead, Hale called upon Jake Barrett to close things out. To say he struggled would be an understatement. De Aza walked on six pitches. Granderson struck out and after a pitching visit by Mike Butcher, pinch hitter Kelly Johnson launched a fastball deep into the upper deck of Citi Field to tie the ballgame at 2-2. Adam Loewen came on in relief, allowing a single to Neil Walker before getting a grounder from Jay Bruce for the 2nd out. Hudson came on and retired Flores on a flyout to end the inning and send us to free baseball.

The two teams traded singles in the 10th but nothing came to fruition. The 11th was more of the same, with the D-backs getting a single and the Mets going down in order. The 12th was a different story. Oscar Hernandez, only up and playing because of injuries and babies, hit a deep fly ball to left field that stayed in the air for what seemed like minutes. It drifted back and back and back and wouldn't you know it? Oscar Hernandez hit his first career home run. Randall Delgado was excellent through two innings to pick up the 3-2 win.

Nice turnout for a Wednesday, although the extra innings probably padded the comment totals a tad. Comment of the thread goes to hotclaws for this amazing depiction.

One of the best things we’ve watched in the Olympics so far was a quarter-final in the men’s table tennis. We were cheering wildly for Vladimir Samsonov, a 40-year-old from Belarus, a country we could not locate with absolute certainty, as he took part in his sixth Olympics, striving to get past the quarter-finals for the first time ever. This had so much inherent drama, it needed none of NBC’s fluff pieces, and was amplified by Samsonov suffering a leg injury in the second game that required a lengthy medical time-out before he could continue. Games are played to 11, but you have to win by two, and the third was a nailbiter that ended up going 17-all before Samsonov broke through. He eventually prevailed, four games to two: high-fives around SnakePit Towers.

What does that have to do with today’s game? We face Bartolo Colon who, like Samsonov, is playing at the highest level well beyond when he should. Colon is already in the top 10 all-time for wins after age 40, with 57, and shows no signs of slowing down. He recently said he wants to win 19 more, a mark which would put him fourth, ahead of Randy Johnson, Cy Young and Warren Spahn. There are just two other active major-leaguers whose debut pre-dates the Diamondbacks: one (A-Rod) will be calling it quits on Friday, and the other (Big Papa) hangs up his cleats at the end of the month [B-R.com still lists Karim Garcia as “active”, even though he last played in the majors for MLB, because he’s still playing in Mexico]

This puts it into focus. The pitcher he’ll be facing today, Robbie Ray, was 5½ when Colon made his major-league debut in April 1997. A sharper contrast in styles could hardly be imagined. Ray’s average two-seam fastball this year clocks in at 93.1 mph, and he peaked at 97.5 mph. The fastest of the 1,207 two-seam fastballs Colon has thrown in 2016, didn’t even reach 91 mph. Among the 101 qualifying pitchers, Ray’s strikeout rate ranks third (11.31, behind only Jose Fernandez and Max Scherzer). Colon is 95th (5.87). But it’s Colon who has the better record and a significantly better ERA. It can only be roundly applauded, particularly by anyone for whom forty is now but a distant memory.
