The Diamondbacks hadn’t won a series in Philadelphia since a sweep in 2007, which was part of an 11-1 stretch in late May that vaulted the Diamondbacks into the middle of the NL West race. Circumstances this year are different, but Archie Bradley took the mound looking to end the run of futility in Philly, and give Diamondbacks fans something to cheer about.

Record: 32-39. Pace: 73-89. Change on 2015: -3.

From the very beginning, Bradley pounded the strike zone, reaching an 0-2 count on five of the first seven hitters he faced. A two-out infield single by Odubel Herrera in the first inning was the only blemish until Cody Asche led off the fifth with a single, but Zac Eflin was perfect for the first two innings.

Bradley helped his own cause in the third. Brandon Drury led off the frame with a double, and advanced to third on a groundout by Nick Ahmed. Bradley’s fly ball into center field was shallow, but a poor throw from Herrera helped to make sure that Drury scored and Bradley got the RBI as the D-backs took a 1-0 lead.

Bradley finally ran into some trouble in the fifth. Asche’s single was followed by a one-out walk to Cameron Rupp, putting two on with only one out. But Freddy Galvis fouled out and Eflin grounded out to end the threat. Still, though, the game seemed likely to come down to which pitcher would crack first. With both orders coming up the third time in the sixth inning, the time was right for someone to break through.

Eflin retired the first two in the sixth, although it took him 14 pitches to do so. Goldy hit a single the other way, and, on the 24th pitch of the inning, Jake Lamb lined a double to the left-center field wall to make it 2-0. Chris Herrmann was intentionally walked to get to Peter O’Brien, who has only hit home runs since being called up. David Hernandez was brought in to face O’Brien. However, O’Brien struck out to end the inning. He made the final out in the second, fourth, and sixth, but broke the pattern with a single in the eighth and instead made the final out in the ninth.

Meanwhile, Bradley had lost the strike zone in the fifth and couldn’t find it again in the sixth. A leadoff walk got the bullpen active, and a single followed, and then Nick Ahmed committed an error on what might have been a double play ball, loading the bases with no one out. A double play scored a run, but Bradley got Asche to fly out to end the inning, stranding one runner. Through six, the Diamondbacks held a 2-1 lead.

Bradley was pulled in the seventh for Rickie Weeks, Jr., to pinch hit. While Weeks struck out, a leadoff single by Brandon Drury and a walk by Phil Gosselin set things up for the Diamondbacks to get a two out run for the second consecutive inning. Michael Bourn’s single plated Drury to make it 3-1.

That meant that the Diamondbacks, who sported a 24-2 record when leading at the start of the seventh inning, held a two-run advantage with Clippard, Hudson, and Ziegler all ready to go. That didn’t mean it was smooth. Clippard fell behind on the first three hitters he faced, but got two of them out, walking the third. He then struck out Cesar Hernandez to end the seventh. Hudson set down the Phillies in order. Ziegler also set the D-backs down in order, including two strike outs, but not for the save. A pair of triples, including one by Phil Gosselin who went 2-for-4 playing in front of his father on Father’s Day, made it 5-1 entering the bottom of the ninth.

Good Archie Bradley showed up, and if the Arizona offense was less home-run happy this Father's Day, it was still enough to take a third straight win in Philadelphia

Archie Bradley was thoroughly dominant in the early going, giving up just an infield single through the first four innings. He did seem to flag a little there after, putting two on in the fifth, and having to work through a real jam in the sixth. A walk, a single and a Nick Ahmed error loaded the bases with no outs, but Bradley did a good job of minimizing the damage. While a run scored on a double-play, that was all, and Archie exited after six inning of one-run ball (and that, unearned), on three hits and two walks, with five strikeouts. The A-bullpen of Tyler Clippard, Daniel Hudson and Brad Ziegler then took things the rest of the way.

Bradley also got the D-backs on the board, his sacrifice fly opening the scoring in the third. A Jake Lamb double into the left-center gap drove in our second run, and Michael Bourn picked up an RBI with a seventh inning single. Local boy Phil Gosselin scurried home on a wild pitch to add another insurance run and Lamb had an RBI triple to score Goldy once more, both in the ninth. Gosselin got a pair of hits and a walk, and there was also a two-hit game for Brandon Drury. Paul Goldschmidt walked and extended his hitting streak to 13 games, the longest active run in the majors. Don't look now, but the D-backs are only 1.5 back of the Rockies for third ... Little steps!

preston.salisbury will be along shortly with the full recap.

After twp good starts following his return from Reno, Archie Bradley seems to have slid back into mediocrity in his last couple.

The first couple of times Archie Bradley took the mound after he was recalled, it was like watching a new pitcher. Against the Padres and Cubs, he allowed four earned runs over 13.1 innings, but most impressive was the K:BB ratio of 19:4. Considering he had walked more than he had struck out prior to that, it was a clear and obvious improvement. However, in the last two starts, Bradley has struggled with control, waling seven in 11.1 innings. The whiffs have still been there (14 in total), but that rate of free passes is not good - especially when you also allow five home-runs, as Bradley did. That's why in June, Bradley is 0-3 with a 5.19 ERA - and that. with a .235 BABIP.

It's a question of consistency for Bradley, who took a no-hitter into the fifth inning last time out, against the Dodgers, only to unravel and melt down quickly there. But it is worth remembering that Bradley is still aged only 23. I think there's a tendency, particularly in recent times where fans are so much more aware of upcoming prospects, to expect more from them immediately on arrival. We've seen that elsewhere, with the Aaron Blair and, perhaps most obviously, Julio Urias. If you're a well-regarded prospect with good minor-league numbers, you are now expected to be able to retire major-league hitters. But there's a reason they are different.

So, we probably need to be patient with Bradley: appreciate the good starts, and tolerate the bad ones. Hopefully, the former will gradually become more consistent and frequent, while the latter will become rare. But it's worth bearing in mind that the greatest pitcher Arizona ever developed, Brandon Webb, hadn't even made his major-league debut at the age Bradley is now. He's not going anywhere, at least immediately. Shelby Miller will return to the rotation, but he'll replace Zack Godley, and it looks like Bradley will keep his spot at least until Rubby De La Rosa returns, and that's still some time off. I suspect the weak-hitting Phillies may get chewed up by Archie.
