The Arizona Diamondbacks selected 30 additional players in Rounds 11-40 of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft, as announced by D-backs Director, Scouting Deric Ladnier.

The D-backs selected 32 of their 40 selections from the collegiate ranks. This year’s draft class is comprised of: 6 catchers, 8 infielders, 6 outfielders, 15 right-handed pitchers and 5 left-handed pitchers.

Coastal Carolina infielder Connor Owings, brother of D-backs' INF/OF Chris Owings, was selected with the second-annual "Cory Hahn 34th Pick." Owings, who was named a Louisville Slugger Second-Team All-American and the Big South Conference Player of the Year, entered play today hitting .373 (81-for-217) with 16 doubles, 2 triples, 15 homers and 51 RBI in 63 games as a senior for the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina is currently playing Louisiana State University in the NCAA Super Regionals, and is seeking its first College World Series berth in program history. The selection takes place each year and is named after Hahn, who currently works in the D-backs' scouting department. Hahn wore No. 34 for ASU and was selected with the 34th pick in the 2013 draft.

In addition, Arizona selected 4 players from Canada, the most of any team in baseball: C Andy Yerzy (second round), RHP Taylor Curtis (fourth), RHP Jacob Polancic (11th) and C Luke Van Rycheghem (23rd). Entering this year's draft, the D-backs had selected 7 players from Canada in team history.

Other D-backs selections of note from rounds 11-40:

C Gavin Stupienski (12th round, 359th overall) hit .347 (83-for-239) with 14 doubles, 14 homers, 61 RBI and 59 runs scored in 60 games during his junior season at University of North Carolina Wilmington. He was named to the midseason watch list for the Johnny Bench Award.

INF Manny Jefferson (13th round, 389th overall) was a 3-year starting shortstop at Pepperdine University, where he hit .277 (56-for-202) with 12 homers and 38 RBI as a junior in 2016. He was teammates with J.P Crawford, Baseball America's No. 6 prospect, at Lakewood (Calif.) High School.

LHP Colin Poche (14th Round, 419th overall) was a Louisville Slugger Second-Team All American as a junior at Dallas Baptist University last season after he went 9-1 with a 2.38 ERA (26 ER in 98.1 IP) in 16 starts. He was a fifth-round selection by the Orioles in the 2012 Draft.

RHP Connor Grey (20th Round, 599th overall) set a St. Bonaventure University record and ranked second in the Atlantic-10 Conference with 95 strikeouts.

INF Cameron Cannon (21st round, 629th overall) hit .353 (30-for-85) with 6 home runs and 21 RBI in 26 games for Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale, Ariz.

RHP Kevin Ginkel (22nd round, 659th overall) entered today 4-1 with a 2.82 ERA (17 ER in 54.1 IP) for the University of Arizona. He took a perfect game into the seventh inning at Arizona State on April 26.

OF Myles Babitt (25th round, 749th overall) is the son of former Major League infielder and former D-backs scout Mack "Shooty" Babitt, who now serves as a Major League scout for the Mets and as an analyst on the pre- and postgame shows for the A's broadcast on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

The Diamondbacks didn’t have a first round pick due to signing Zack Greinke in the offseason, but they did make some solid, if not spectacular, picks in the draft. After last year’s draft was mostly filled with high-floor players that are almost sure MLB players, they opted for a bit more upside in this year’s draft. Barring any Day 3 surprises, we have a pretty good idea on who the organization values in the draft.

Best Pick: Anfernee Grier, OF, Auburn (CB-A/39th overall): Grier flashes above average tools across the board, most notably his speed on the field and on the basepaths. Grier had a monster junior campaign, hitting .366 with a .210 ISO, stole 19/24 bases, and played excellent CF defense for the Tigers. Grier has faced plenty of talented pitchers in the SEC, with Florida and Texas A&M getting their entire pitching staff drafted in the top 5 rounds. Grier posted solid numbers in conference play, finishing as a 1st Team All-SEC in addition to being a 1st Team All-American outfielder. As a prospect, I have to think he is the top position player in the organization and could finish the year in Class A Kane County with a potentially aggressive assignment such as Visalia in 2017. I have his MLB ETA as late 2018.

Best Value: Jon Duplantier, RHP, Rice (3rd/89 overall): Duplantier is a pitcher who has similar upside to Archie Bradley, although they were able to land him in the 3rd round this year. He has health and command issues, which is what dropped him from a surefire 1st round pick to a mid 3rd round pick this year. There are always concerns about workload when it comes to pitchers coming out of Rice University and Duplantier missed the entire 2015 season with shoulder problems. Duplantier features a low 90s fastball that tops out at 96 MPH with a lot of life on it and his delivery makes it difficult for hitters to pick up. He also flashes a plus curveball and has been working on a change-up recently. If he can stay healthy, he’s almost a surefire #2 starter in an MLB rotation.

Riskiest Pick: Andrew Yerzy, C, York Mills College Institute (2nd/54th overall): The Diamondbacks may have reached for Yerzy in the 2nd round as a below-slot guy when you take a look at the rest of their draft. Yerzy offers a strong left-handed bat, but there are legitimate questions about his ability to stick behind the plate although it’s unlikely to predict who will be on the big league club 5-6 years into the future. If Yerzy is unable to stick behind the plate, he profiles as a 1B/LF type where his value comes exclusively from his bat. As a catcher, he needs a lot of time developing defensively but the upside is left-handed power in the middle of the lineup in an important position. Best case scenario he turns into a player like Miguel Montero. Yerzy is only 17 years old, so there’s also the age factor with his development. Yerzy is a Notre Dame commit, but being a 2nd round pick likely has him going pro instead.

Most Curious Pick: Joey Rose, 3B, Tom’s River HS (5th/149th overall): Rose was a late-riser in the draft due to a spectacular senior season in HS where he hit .437 with 11 HR and 38 RBI. Rose played SS in high school, but the Diamondbacks are likely moving him to 3B where his power plays more. Rose is a Oklahoma State commit, although I think the Diamondbacks will have enough money to sign him away. Of their Top 10 picks, the other 9 are unlikely to be above slot guys and a couple of them are well below slot guys. There isn't a scouting report available, but Baseball America did list him as the 10th best prospect in the draft out of New Jersey.

Three-quarters of all draft picks will take place today. That, however, does not mean that three-quarters of major-league players will come from this portion...

Here's a list of the best players - those with a career value of one win or greater - taken by the Diamondbacks over the course of their draft history (since 1996), who came from outside the first ten rounds:

1996: 36th round, Junior Spivey (career bWAR 8.2)

1998: 29th round, Mike Koplove (3.5)

1999: 18th round, Lyle Overbay (16.9)

2000: 17th round, Doug Slaten (1.7)

2001: 11th round, Dan Uggla (17.6)

2004: 16th round, Mark Reynolds (6.7)

2007: 15th round, Josh Collmenter (7.6)

2007, 26th round, Tommy Layne (1.7)

2008, 27th round, Ryan Cook (3,2)

2010, 19th round, Adam Eaton (12.7)

We haven't had one since Eaton, though of course, those players have perhaps not had enough time to develop fully. If we draw the cutoff there, that's a total of 450 players drafted in rounds 11-40 by the Diamondbacks, ten of whom have gone on to be useful major-leaguers (for a loose definition of "useful"). Using that percentage, we have roughly a 50-50 chance (49.04%, to be precise) of finding someone like that out of today's selections. There's a 51% chance we get nobody at all, and a 14.3% chance we end up with more than one. Remind me to check back in 2022 and see what happened!

Not sure what kind of traction we might get from this, or if anyone is even going to be paying attention, but there may be a pick or two of interest down the pipe. At least there is no delay here, with picks following each other immediately. The draft just got under way, at 9am Arizona time, and as yesterday, is live on MLB.com.

Here's a look at the eight players selected by the Diamondbacks on Day 2 of the 2016 MLB draft.

3rd round: RHP Jon Duplantier, Rice

Bit of a surprise Duplantier was still around: John Sickels reckoned, "He shouldn't last past the second round and could still go late in the first or in the compensation round." Looks like potential health issues may have scared off earlier suitors, as he missed all of 2015 with a sore shoulder. He didn't need surgery, and recently said he believes the time away helped improve his mechanics. "He tweaked his delivery and incorporated different exercises tailored to his pitching motion. [Rice coach Wayne[ Graham said that Duplantier’s delivery was at times a bit exaggerated — "flinging it" he called it — and contributed to the shoulder problems. When he tightened his motion, he actually improved both velocity and consistency."

According to Sickels, "His fastball has picked up since high school and now runs 91-96 MPH, with movement. He also has a plus curveball and a change-up that can be solid-average with a little more development. His athleticism, makeup and mound presence are those of a major league starter; the main weakness in his skill set is command, which can be inconsistent. His stuff has been so good that college hitters struggle to square him up, but some control tightening will be needed at higher levels." If he can stay healthy, sounds like there is plenty of upside there - but that is certainly not an insignificant "if".

4th round: RHP Curtis Taylor, University of British Columbia

Are the D-backs going to relocate to Vancouver? That's two of our first four picks coming from North of the border, Taylor following C Andrew Yerzy. Curtis is a solid guy, listed at 6'6" tall, and anywhere up to 225 lbs in weight. CBS Sports were uncertain whether he can stick as a starter, thinking he needs a better change-up for that to happen, but said of Taylor, "He has a big fastball from a low three-quarters arm slot, which helps give his heater some late run. His slider needs some refinement, but given his fastball and size, if he can turn that slide piece into a plus offering, his ceiling would continue to creep up." Here's the moment when his selection was announced, as Curtis watched with his family.

5th round: 3B Joey Rose, Toms River North

Rose moved up the draft rankings thanks to an impressive 2016 campaign: he batted .437 and hit a school-record eleven home-runs for Toms River, with a monstrous .615 on-base percentage and 1.015 SLG. He has committed to play baseball at Oklahoma State, but Rose's reaction on Twitter [he's @The_Rose_Petals] made it seem more likely that he's going to turn professional, saying "Blessed to have been picked by @Dbacks! West Coast here I come." He also said, "I want to go out there and play as soon as I can. I know it’s a process, so I’m just going to stay ready. I’m just going to enjoy the time with my family and talk it over with them and my adviser." Here's Rose in action:

6th round: LHP Mack Lemieux, Palm Beach CC

Lemieux was a 14th-round pick last year for the Washington Nationals, but did not sign. Beyond that, not got too much more on him (yes, we're drifting outside the area where prospects tend to have received much in the way of public scouting) - he was 3-3 with a 2.79 ERA for Palm Beach this year, with 63 strikeouts over 67.2 innings of work. Here's some video of Lemieux in action.

This is not exactly a baseball powerhouse, with Watson being far and away the earliest player drafted from it, by quite some way - the other three were no earlier than the 29th round. He went 10-2 with 176 strikeouts for the Drovers, and helped take the college to the NAIA College World Series for the first time. They lost both games there, but Watson struck out 15 over eight innings of one-run ball in his start (a 2-1 loss), though also walked seven.

8th round: C Ryan January, San Jacinto College North

January played catcher and outfielder, batting .339 over 59 games, with ten home-runs for an under-the-radar school which has given the baseball world Roger Clemens, Brandon Belt and Andy Pettitte. Assistant coach Jimmy Durham said in March, "He’s just an amazing athlete and he’s got a lot of baseball in front of him to be played. Size wise (6'3", 200 lbs), he’s a prototypical guy for the next level," and has been impressed by January's defensive strides. Baseball Prospectus's Adam McInturff called him, "Projectable-framed, tall left-handed hitter w/ long, fast swing and good raw power."

9th round: RHP Tommy Eveld, U South Florida

Currently the closer for the South Florida Bulls, but he was a relative late-comer to baseball, partly through mostly having been a football player, partly due to tearing his ACL twice on that field. It's a weird but interesting story, which has seen Eveld blossom: "His fastball can hit the upper 90s. His slider has evolved into his bread-and-butter pitch. He can even dust off a decent changeup." At least his arm should have plenty of bullets left, basically not having thrown from 2010 to 2015.

10th round: OF Stephen Smith, Texas Tech

Smith reached the Little League World Series in 2007 as a 12-year-old with the Western All-Stars. They beat the last AZ team to qualify, Chandler, and finished third, Smith being starting pitcher when they lost to eventual champions Warner Robins. He also made it to the College World Series in his freshman year with Texas Tech and might go back there; they face East Carolina in a Super Regional play-off this weekend. Smith has hit .325 so far, with 10 HR and an OPS of .973.

The Diamondbacks go with a HS 3B in Joey Rose with their 5th round pick. Rose is a player who hate late-rise who can flat out hit. He is committed to play at Oklahoma State University, so he may be a more difficult player to sign although the last two picks suggest that they can give him above slot type money. He played shortstop in high school, but projects to play at 3B at the pro level.

The Diamondbacks continue their run on college pitchers on the 3rd day, this time taking Curtis Taylor. Taylor pitched from both the bullpen and rotation at the University of British Columbia, although he will get a chance to start at the pro level. Taylor is 6'6" 225, so he's mostly filled out. His fastball sits low 90s, tops out at 95 and features a slider and splitter. He throws from a low arm slot (below 3/4) and his slider and splitter are solid if he can stay on top of the ball.

Taylor is the 2nd player the Diamondbacks have drafted out of Canada this year, taking Andy Yerzy last night in the 2nd round.

The Diamondbacks start the 2nd day of the draft with a college pitcher in Jon Duplantier. Duplantier is 6’4" 225, so he’s already filled out his frame on the mound. His fastball sits low 90s with good arm-side run and tops out at 96 MPH. He missed the 2015 college season due to a shoulder injury that fortunately didn’t require surgery. His stuff is easily good enough to play in an MLB rotation, but the biggest concerns are health and command in the long term.

For the 2016 season, Duplantier has a 3.24 ERA in 111 innings with a 147/48 strikeout to walk ratio. If he can stay healthy and improve his fastball command, the Diamondbacks may have a steal in the 3rd round.

Who will follow Yerzy into th

After the excitement* (note: "excitement" may require pick in the top thirty) of the first day, things should settle down on Day Two, as we go through rounds 2-10. Coverage today is entirely on the MLB Network, so you can follow along there. As yet, the Diamondbacks have stuck to position players, taking an outfielder and a (hopeful) catcher in rounds one and two, so we'll see if that trend continues. High-school pitchers are reportedly the "undisputed strength" of this draft, and the very young age of the catcher we picked makes me wonder if we will perhaps be looking to build for some way in the future.
