Some roster shuffling, with starting pitchers Taylor Clarke and Jon Duplantier both coming off the disabled list today. However, they have gone in different directions, with Clarke joining the roster in preparation for tonight’s start, while Duplantier was optioned down to Reno. More on that second move later. To make room for Clarke, Domingo Leyba was optioned back to Triple-A, the team no longer being able to take advantage of the extra roster spot provided by a four-man rotation. Leyba performed well enough in his first taste of the majors, going 3-for-9 with a walk. He’s still looking for his first start though. Wonder if any other D-back has ever started his career with 10 straight appearances off the bench?

I suppose I should have realized when Turambar asked for a recap swap, that there was method to his madness. Because it turns out I’m cursed with another Clarke start. Or maybe, he’s cursed with another Jim recap? Either way, the last two starts of his I’ve covered have... not gone well. The first was the infamous Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now recap, and the second, while starting better, finished in a Greg Holland blown save against the Dodgers. You’ll understand I’m wanting something rather more pleasant to write about. It’s also my third recap this week, having previously done Sunday and Tuesday’s games: this is the rubber contest, since I went 1-1 in those.

Torey Lovullo’s media briefing

  • Jon Duplantier was activated from the IL and then optioned to Reno. He threw 35 pitches yesterday. Torey was non committal on his future role. He said he would need to get to 5 IP/65 or more pitches before being considered a possibility for rotation. But he also said within the next 4-5 days if they had a need for Dup in a relief role, he would be called up, and that’s been communicated to him. [Audio 0:45-1:30, and then again at 2:10-3:30]
  • Alex Young has finally been named as the Sunday starter. There was some conversation about the hesitancy to name him sooner. Torey said there was no hesitancy on HIS part.
  • Adam Jones comments from 6:20. Interesting to hear, and Torey had a big smile as he was saying them.
  • Really interesting comment about Clarke fighting through his struggles from 9:30 on. In particular, an anecdote about Clarke not wanting to come out game, and the interaction between TL and Clarke in that moment. Good stuff.
