Tonight marks the first time we face Paul Goldschmidt, and I have so many conflicting feelings here. Over the past five years or so, until the end of 2018, it has been an absolute joy to watch him in a Diamondbacks’ uniform, even as we knew his exit from the team was almost inevitable. It came in December and... I came to terms with it. As a fan, I didn’t like it, but I understood the necessity of it. And if that had been all, I’d have had nothing but goodwill for Goldschmidt. Business is business. However, his signing an extension with the Cardinals, covering the five years after this one for $130 million, kinda changed the way I feel about it. That felt much more like a “betrayal”.

Complicating matters is the performances of the various players involved. Goldschmidt has been merely average, a far cry from the perennial All-Star and regular MVP candidate. This was the first season since 2012 he wasn’t part of the Midsummer Classic. Five D-backs’ regulars have a better OPS than Goldy’s .769; and he’s considerably closer to Nick Ahmed’s .740 than any of them. Meanwhile, Carson Kelly - one of those five regulars - looks like our catcher of the future and Luke Weaver was excellent before hitting the IL. I thought this deal might eventually end up favoring the D-backs. Just not at the All-Star break in the first season, and that’s even ignoring the prospect and draft pick we also obtained.

It’s kinda like your supermodel girlfriend breaking up with you after a long relationship, because she says she wants to pursue a career in astrophysics. Only to be seen on American Idol instead. Oh, and her younger twin sisters turn out to be deeply into you. Yeah. It’s like that. All a little embarrassing, yet you can’t exactly decline the bounties which fortune has bestowed on you. Tonight, both teams have their 1B batting fourth. It’ll be interesting if Christian Walker - who has largely replaced Goldschmidt, and is another one of those regulars with a better OPS - singles or walks. I’d love to be a fly on the wall (or Dave McKay) for the conversation between the two which follows...
