The consecutive scoreless inning streak for the Arizona Diamondbacks finally came to an end at 25 innings tonight. Steven Souza Jr. was slotted in the leadoff position in the lineup for the first time all season, and he got the job done all night both at the plate and with his glove. Souza was responsible for 2 of the Diamondbacks 3 runs this evening. It was his solo home run in the top of the 3rd inning that broke the seal for Arizona. The D’backs tacked on 2 more runs in the 4th. Ketel Marte doubled to begin the frame and then was driven in on a single up the middle of the infield from Nick Ahmed. Souza knocked his second extra base hit of the game with a line double to left field to bring in Ahmed. At that point with 3 runs scored in the game, Arizona had scored as many runs as the San Francisco Giants in the series.
Fortunately, that was all the run support needed for Zack Godley tonight. Assisted by a grouping of stellar defensive plays from Souza and Ahmed, Godley was able to pitch to 2 outs in the 8th inning before being lifted from the game. His start was still slightly rough around the edges, he hit 3 batters in the game with pitches, but he allowed only 2 hits and 1 base on balls on 6 strikeouts. After Godley recorded those first 2 outs in the 8th, he surrendered a single to Gorkys Hernandez and the walk to Hunter Pence. Archie Bradley came on in relief and allowed one inherited runner to score, but stopped the damage there.
The 3-1 victory ended a 2 game losing streak just in time for a pivotal 4 game series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles beginning tomorrow. Full account of the tonight’s event to follow.
