Diamondbacks 2, Braves 1: Beercap at Last!

First beercap after a month of dieting, first beercap during a World Cup week and first beercap (I’m pretty sure) against the Braves.

On that note, will this weekend mark the first time Croatia wins the Cup? Will anyone on the blog besides me care?

Beer 1: Blood of Julius by Ironfire

Gonna switch things up a bit here and drift away from bullet points. Rambling may occur, but that’ll only add to the fun right?

Well, here we are, halfway through the season and still not knowing how good or how mediocre this vintage of Dbacks is. Is it May Dback, or April/June Dback? Consistency would sure be nice right about now.

That first half of the 1st seems to highlight my fears instead of banishing then. 1-2-3 our bats go down, but at least I’m comforted by the thought that Miller will not be pitching for us this night. Praise be upon Goldy.

Godley gets out of the first, but not without a little blood. 0-1 Braves. My eyes are fairly keen after lasik, so I’m confident in saying he’s feeling his way toward locating his curve. Seems like the hits he gave up that inning were all balls that didn’t quite break. All other pitches had movement up the Yin Yang. Maybe he’ll round out as the game goes by?

Souza!!!!! See?! Shoewizard was right, he’s destined to contribute as he gets a lead off double in the 2nd. ............Nope. Nevermind. Him getting picked off at second has erased that good will. Land and Descalso close out what should have been a hope filled inning after that debacle. I’ll need another beer soon.

Lead off double in the Braves half and Swanson is up. Sure would like to undo that trade. Yea his at bat gets scored as an out, but I still feel like we lost out.....

More bass running mishaps, as Ahmed gets run down followed by Godley laying down an awful bunt. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Beer 2: Questionable Advise by Council Brewing Co.

On my drive home I really only missed Godley calming down a bit and the Dbacks offense making silly miskates. So basically I missed nothing at all. It’s almost like I just poured this beer early in the game versus in the top of the 5th. If only that were so.

Sanchez just retired his 7th straight Dback there in the 5th, goes back to my earlier comment on which Dbacks team will show up down the stretch of this season. So far this game it seems like the offensively inept version of May and (so-far) July.

Godley still has that filthy filthy curve, which helps him along this filthy filthy game. A bit of silver lining in the frustrating game to be sure.

Avila has once again done something to help me forget just how bad he was, as his lead off hit in tuns leads to a tie game as Jay bats him in the 6th. 1-1 and we’re not out of this game just yet.

Godley once again keeps pace with his opposite Sanchez. He’s not being a world beater, but 6 innings in he’s being good enough to keep things within striking distance for the Snakes.

Rain’s coming down here in the 7th and I’m 90% certain we’re gonna see ourselves a delay to this game. Kinda good I guess, as it allows me a chance to reload my beer and eat dinner, but honestly I’d rather not have this turn in to a long night. Good thing I’m stocked up on fine ale :)

Beer 3: 18th Hour IPA by Crooked Tooth Brewing Co.

Another runs scores despite the rain! 2-1 and Avila is up again, seeking to further his quest for redemption. The grounds crew interupts with quest with one of the more thorough mound-fixing-operations I’ve witnessed. A whole legion of grounds keepers rushes the mound, quicker than any foul tempered player, and quickly manicure that mound to Winkler’s liking. Blessedly this manicure of dirt leads to an Avila walk, but cursedly this leads to nothing more in the inning leaving two stranded. The lead is ours though, so all is well.

Yoshi nearly soured my excellent Cornish Pasty meal with that lead-off walk, but he maintains his excellent resume right after that. Seriously though, he continues to be an excellent pickup from overseas. WAY better than a certain Tomas person. Just saying. 2-1 Dbacks going into the top of the 8th.

The Beard abides, and the 8th endures. Still would love some more insurance runs, and even with a bullpen as shiny and chrome as ours you’ll still be wanting more runs.

Save #23 and Boxberger helps us close out the first game of the series. This was a game hills and valleys to say the least, but luckily the Dbacks did just enough to pull out a W against a very good Atlanta team. Added bonus from the last our coming again a Dback former top prospect in Swanson. WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2-1

A relatively light thread, likely because there wasn’t very much to chat about in the middle innings. Present were: AzDbackfanInDc, DBacksEurope, DORRITO, DeadManG, GuruB, Jack Sommers, Jackwriter, Jim McLennan, Makakilo, Michael McDermott, Rockkstarr12, asteroid, coldblueAZ, edbigghead, hotclaws, onedotfive, since_98 and smartplays. shoewiz... Sorry, Jack (that’s going to take some getting used to!) had the only Sedona Red comment:

So, we could be back in first place by the end of the night, if the Angels can beat the Dodgers (that one is still in the third). Failing that, it’s back to not-so-sunny SunTrust Park tomorrow, when the other ZG, Zack Greinke, takes the mound for the D-backs. That will be a 1:10 pm first pitch!
