Regular Season

Before the season, Marte restructured his contract.

Those club options are no more, because Arizona ripped them up to sign Marte’s new contract. He’ll receive the $8.4 million he was due this year and then another $76 million from ’23 to ’27. But since the Diamondbacks were certain to pick up those options, we can think of this deal as a three-year extension worth $52 million starting after the last option year.

Marte represented the Dominican Rebuplic in the years World Baseball Classic. He only played in 2 out of the 4 games for the DR. Those were the last 2 games for the DR, too, so I wonder if he didn’t arrive on time (or something?) He went 2-8, with a double. The DR did not advance past the round robin stage.

In Marte’s first 26 games to begin the season, he hit 7 doubles, 2 triples and 3 home runs to go with 8 RBI. He struck out 16 times, to 4 walks and slashed .253/.299/.455 OPS .754. He did have a 7 game hitting streak in the month, including getting 5 out of his 10 hits against the Dodgers.

His month of May was better, seeing him slash .305/.370/.495 OPS .865. He hit 5 home runs and 14 RBI to go along with 11 walks and 20 strikeouts. He had an 8 game hitting streak in the middle of the month, mostly singles, but then put together another 11 game hitting streak to end the month.

In June, he really caught fire slashing .315/.443/.598/ OPS 1.040. he had 7 home runs and 22 RBI and 18 strikeouts to 20 walks. He had three 3 hit games. He struggled in the 7 games leading up to the All Star Game. At the break, he had 15 home runs and 44 RBI and was slashing .286/.363/.494 OPS .857.

From the beginning of the second half through the end of August he slashed .244/.333/.438 OPS .771 with 6 home runs and 24 RBI. He did not have any major hitting streaks. His only 3 hit game, came in a 5-2 loss to Seattle on July 28th. Marte actually faced future teammate Paul Sewald in that game, flying out to LF. He did not have to wait very long to become teammates. During the 9 game Dback losing streak to start August, Marte was also just 5-32 and was only on base 7 times.

For the month of September he hit 4 home runs and drove in 14 in 24 games. He slashed .299/.386/.540 OPS 926. In the Snakepit game of the year (9/16 versus Cubs), he went 0-5 with 2 strikeouts and a walk.

Below is a graph and an article from the SI, Inside the Diamondbacks. Curiously, Jack did not write this. :P

Marte finished the regular season second in batting average (.276), total base hits (157), on-base percentage (.358), and OPS (.843), all behind rookie superstar outfielder Corbin Carroll. He was third in slugging (.485), behind Carroll and first baseman Christian Walker, and tied for second in team RBI (82)—once again behind Walker—with outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

In the NLDS against the Dodgers, he went 5-14 (.357) with another homer run. That was part of the 4 home runs off Lance Lynn in the 3rd inning of game 3. Side note, Marte did homer off Kershaw in the 2017 NLDS.

In the NLCS against Philadelphia, Marte earned NLCS MVP honors. He went 12-31 (.387/.406/.581/ OPS .987) in the seven games. He did not have a home run, but had 4 doubles a triple and 3 RBI. He also had a walkoff hit in game 3.

Against the Texas Rangers in the World Series, he went 5-20, with 2 doubles and 4 RBI.

Trivia: Who has the longest post season hitting streak? Jeter? Rickey? Manny being Manny? Nope. It began in the Wild Card game in 2017, when Marte went 3-5 (two of which were triples) against the Rockies and ended in game 5 of the recently concluded World Series. His post season totals are: 21 games played, 96 plate appearances, 7 doubles, 3 triples and 4 home runs. He has 13 RBI and 3 steals and has slashed .344/.385/.589 OPS .974

A very good article from Fan Graphs about Marte’s streak, including plate discipline, other long postseason streaks, and more.
