Forget “Rookie of the Year”, “Game of the Year”, “Performance of the Year” and all those other categories that are way more important than the category we will discuss in this article: the Best Smile on the 2023 Diamondbacks.
The Japanese masters have known the power of the smile for centuries, hence this strong haiku:
Have a smile a day
Or many more to fill the day
To keep the doctor away
- Ancient haiku from unknown origin, although most often credited to Dibaksya Europsu
There was a fiery debate on here about who had the best smile on the 2023 Diamondbacks team. Despite the 100+ comments on this topic and Justin27 trying desperately to moderate and delete the double votes, when the smoke was gone, the blood cleaned up and the body parts taken away, it turned out that there was no clear winner, so we have decided to let the people vote.
Wow, that is a terrific smile! No wonder Dominic Canzone is one of the favourites to walk away with the 2023 SnakePit Award of having the best smile on this team. It is a smile that is ridiculously difficult to imitate: Canzone displays the upper part of his teeth, while the lower part is pretty much covered. The upper lips are curved in a lying accolade while the twinkling eyes give his white teeth even more brightness. When I tried to copy the smile at home I was told that I looked like a psycho, so it shows just how good Canzone’s smile is.
Unfortunately, we will not enjoy this smile any longer, for Canzone was sent to the Mariners in the Paul Sewald-deal. Let us enjoy one last time his best smile: the one he had when he achieved his first career hit.
Owww!!! When you think you have a clear winner...boom! Dominic Fletcher steps up to cause some debate. Dominic Fletcher has the smile everyone would like to have. It is an easy go-to smile and looks like he can showcase it at any given moment at any given time of the day and it comes with a huge variety: it is a smile that can be done with the teeth closed or with the denture left a bit open, with both upper and bottom teeth at sight or with only the upper part of the teeth visible. And the best part is...: we will enjoy it next season as well.
Hellooooohoooo! Ketel was back in 2024...and how? Remember the Ketel Marte from a few years back? He had no fun and no fun was no play and no game! Ketel has struggled for a couple of seasons and wasn’t the stud we thought he was who had signed a team friendly deal some years ago. But then 2024 came and our second baseman returned to his old self: hitting, slugging, running, chewing, spitting, but above all...smiling! Even the huge ball in his cheeks couldn’t prevent his smile from coming out time after time and when it came out...it made our eyes twinkle.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
The best thing about Lourdes Gurriel Jr’s smile is that we get to enjoy it for another year. The Cuban is also a perfect example on how much better a smile looks when you have hair or, even better, purple hair. But to show you the strength of Lourdes’ smile, I give you a pic of one with his helmet on. Yeah, didn’t that strike you?!
Lourdes has a smile that is so natural, you wonder if he ever doesn’t smile. Probably not, which makes it even more logical that you want a guy like him on your team: everyone loves to have a positive vibe around you.
The kids are well represented in the nominations, because Alek Thomas is the third one of the younger ones in this batch. Alek Thomas is a joy, not only because of his great smile when he makes an awesome play or hits a homerun, but also because he really never looks angry when he is at the plate. I am sure he is the sunshine in his parents’ home, or at least was. Wherever you see Alek Thomas, you see a smile!
Now it is up to you to decide who deserves the most coveted award on the AZSnakePit. Remember: there is no such thing as a wrong answer!
Who should take home the award for Best Smile on the Diamondbacks team?
