Pina Power is back! After a great first season with the Diamondbacks leading to his only All-Star appearance, Ken Rosenthal reports the team has agreed to contract terms with free agent Lourdes Gurriel Jr on a three-year deal worth 42 million, with a fourth-year option and a second-year opt-out.

Lourdes was originally acquired by the D-backs in the Daulton Varsho-Gabriel Moreno deal last off-season and was immediately slotted in as the everyday left fielder. After a hand injury caused Gurriel to struggle with power through most of 2022, an offseason surgery seemed to correct that issue in 2023 as he had a career-high 23 homers, with 15 of those coming in the first half leading him to his first-ever All-Star appearance in Seattle.

He was a very streaky hitter for the D-backs, at times being the only source of offense and at other times struggling to do much of anything on offense in June and July. All throughout that time, however, Lourdes was something between league-average and excellent on defense, depending on which defensive metric you prefer. All told, he finished 2023 with a 108 wRC+ (.261/.309/.463) and an averaged fWAR/bWAR of 2.5.

The deal is an interesting one and should set the market for some second-tier outfielders. On the surface, a 3 year/$42 million deal seems like market value for an everyday starter, but with a 2nd-year opt-out as well as a 4th-year team option, the team could backload the deal a bit to allow another free-agent signing as well as give Lourdes incentive to accept the early termination opt-out. Either way, it’s a wonderful sign the team continues to spend after a World Series appearance, and what better way than with a known commodity and a well-regarded teammate. The vibes are good.
