PYW’s 2021: Week 23

What new awards will they be handing out this offseason? Let’s take a look!

Last week, I asked you to come up with a new postseason award for MlB to hand out, and you didn’t disappoint! Several really good suggestions, and one really, really dark one that I’m still trying not to laugh at. #IYKYK Anyway, only one red comment this week, so a clear decision on who is at the top of the podium this week. Congrats FatElvis04!

Wasted Money Award Given annually to the player who most underperforms on the field given their salary (4 recs)

Right behind him, with a very similar thought process, we find gzimmerm!

The Iron Glove The clanking, polar opposite of the Gold Glove. I’m thinking of a certain infielder currently sitting in CF (3 recs)

I hate the fact that, while I’m pretty sure who their talking about, I don’t actually know for sure. Is it Marte? Is it Smith? Is it someone else I’m forgetting that was moved out there? I really don’t know for sure...

On a somewhat serious note, I do think an end of season Razzies-type set of awards would be a fun way to keep baseball in the public mind in the off season. Both those awards could be used in some form. You could have the Most Humiliating At Bat Against Shohei Ohtani, both for pitchers and hitters, most painfull HBP, craziest TOOTBLAN, things like that. A combination awards show-slash-Comedy Central roast. It would be perfect for the social media world we live in, I think.

Okay, back to what we were doing. Rounding out our podium this week we have a tie for third place between TucsonTim and AzRattler!

AzRattler - The Firestarter award for those who cannot shut down innings 2 recs
TucsonTim - The Heimlich Award obviously for the biggest choke 2 recs

Very similar, but yet just slightly different. Rattler’s is clearly for relief pitchers, but TucsonTim’s could be for just about anyone on the team!

With his first place finish this week, FatElivs moves into a tie with kilnborn for the second half finalist position, and only three recs behind Jack for the overall lead. Just behind both of them, however, lurk NikT and gzimmerm a small handful of points behind. Also, both AzRattler and TucsonTim join the leaderboard for the first time in the second half. Congrats!

Back in 2019, Zach Buchanan wrote about how Seth Beer was an Olympic-level swimmer before he chose to pursue baseball full time. I missed it when the article first came out, but saw it on Twitter after he made his debut on Thursday. This week, I want you to tell me what other sport one of the Diamondbacks would excel at and why (Seth Beer and swimming excluded for obvious, lack of comedy reasons). Go!
