Regular readers will know that my response to any attempt at a football discussion here is typically to point the offender firmly in the direction of our Cardinals’ sibling, Revenge of the Birds. But I am prepared, just this once, to allow it, since a) there is a Diamondbacks connection, and b) it’s for charity. I’ve previously talked about the #AllWin campaign in which Luke Weaver and Nick Ahmed were involved. Their newest endeavor is Big League Impact Fantasy, which gives baseball lovers the opportunity to compete head-to-head with Major League players in fantasy football, while benefiting some awesome charitable causes.
The weekly salary cap league powered by fantasy platform RealTime Sports will benefit Compassion International and Pittsburgh Kids Foundation. “Nick and I are excited to engage fans in a little friendly competition this fall,” Weaver says. “It’s awesome to be able to use our platform this way, to use the power of sport this way, while also raising money and creating change for something much bigger than ourselves.” Big League Impact was launched in 2013, out of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright’s love for fantasy football and charity. Its vision — led directly by the players who support it — has grown considerably, but its mission remains the same: to fight poverty through the platform of sports.
“Fantasy football is something I look forward to every year,” Wainwright says. “This is the event that started it all for Big League Impact and it’s awesome to watch it grow and to know that we’re able to help more and more people in need every season.” Participants will compete for a grand prize trip for two to Spring Training, plus chances to win all kinds of exciting and exclusive prizes all season long. Registration in the Arizona league also includes an invitation to a VIP pregame reception with Ahmed and Weaver on Tuesday, Sept. 7, followed by a watch party in an all-inclusive suite while the Diamondbacks take on the Texas Rangers.
