On the plus side, things didn’t get much worse in the July numbers. However, it’s also true to say that, coming from a figure to begin June of just 1.76, there wasn’t a great deal of room for them to GET worse. However, with the team having gone 3-24 in the month of June, it was clear that things were staggeringly rough for Arizona fandom. Here are the numbers taken at the start of July.
- 77% - 1 (not confident in the slightest)
- 10% - 2
- 5% - 3
- 4% - 4
- 0% - 5
- 1% - 6
- 0% - 7
- 0% - 8
- 3% - 9 (very, very, VERY confident)
That’s 87% at a two or lower, and 96% at four or below. As for those foolish optimists who voted nine... I’ll have what they’re having. The result was a further decline - in June, 65% voted “1” - with the average sliding from 1.76 down to 1.59. However, that still is not quite the lowest figure of all-time. That still belongs to the poll taken in August 2016, which also saw 77% of respondents turning the dial all the way down to a one. Curiously, that poll had the same number of “9” votes as well. I guess that’s consistent! But the average then was 1.47, so fandom has not quite plumbed those same depths...
Below, you can see the breakdown for the past 12 polls’ results, followed by the line graph showing the trends over this and previous seasons.
Is the worst over? For the Diamondbacks managed to turn things at least somewhat around in July, posting a respectable 11-13 record across the All-Star break. They also managed to sign their #1 pick in the draft, by many accounts scoring a coup when Jordan Lawlar fell to them with the sixth overall pick. However, games like yesterday afternoon’s act as a harsh dose of reality and show there is still a huge gulf between the Diamondbacks and teams with playoff aspirations.
The poll is below, feel free to explain your choice in the comments, especially if it has changed from the July poll.
