Diamondbacks 7, Padres 0: Tyler Gilbert no-hitter beercap

Just a no-hitter. No big. :)

MLB: San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Hello all!

Missed you guys last week due to a certain Snakepitter’s bachelor party. I of course survived, but need a break from beer.
So today I’ll be chilling with my wife on the porch up in northern Arizona; bourbon and cigar in hand.

So with that in mind, let’s go.

1st Inning: “This is the way.”

Yup, it’s a Dbacks Star Wars weekend and that means it’s Christian Sky-Walker night; funny since he’s not starting. But starting for the first since 2017 (in the majors) is Tyler Gilbert….as if we needed more proof of how interesting our pitching staff has been this season.

Gilbert tosses a walk to start things off but luckily for him Frazier grounds in to a double play and then Tyler strikes out Machado to close out the 1st.

The Dbacks bats start things off in the bottom of the 1st with a bang; back to back doubles by VanMeter and Marte. Thus we got a early 1-0 lead and hopefully more to come!

Pavin does Pavin things (getting hits) putting snakes on the corners, but Cabrera loses his cool arguing strikes with blue and he’s promptly ejected after striking out.
Lucky for us Peralta picked up the slack as he singles Marte home and moves Pavin to third. 2-0 Dbacks

Drew Ellis! Crushes his first HR to deep left and we now have 5-0 game. Woot!!!!!!!

2nd Inning: “Never tell me the odds!”

Pretty sure Gilbert didn’t think he’d have this kind of lead (or and lead) going in to the 2nd, but I’m sure he’s thrilled.

Gilbert is also likely thrilled to coast through the Padres again in the 2nd: 1-2-3 go the Padres.

In the bottom of the 2nd the Dback fail to do much of anything, but after a five run 1st I can’t really complain.

3rd Inning: “I find your lack of faith disturbing.”

After the 1st I thought we’d be watching a barn burner type game, but Tyler Gilbert’s pitching has disabused me of that notion.
Thats right folks; Gilbert cruised through the Padres once more in the 3rd.

No Dbats seen in the 3rd, which thoroughly instills in my mind that this game might go far quicker than I thought.

4th Inning: “Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen it.”

Yet ANOTHER scoreless inning for Gilbert. Certainly is refreshing to hear the fans cheer versus jeer. I can live with this kind of baseball. Still 5-0 Dbacks

Varsho leads off our side of the 4th with a double, and Ahmed gets himself a broken bat single to move Varsho to third with no outs. The thus far dominant Gilbert then comes up with Dbats on the corners with no outs and helps our cause with a solid bunt to move Ahmed to 2nd.

Now with VanMeter walk we have the bases juiced for Marte, who regrettably grounds in to a double play……sigh. Still, we’re up 5-0 so I’ll let such a missed chance pass…for now .

5th Inning: “I thought they smelled bad on the outside.”

Wow. Gilbert keeps dealing and closes out the 5th himself as Hosmer lines out right to him. Just wow.

Pavin with another hit to lead off the Dbats 5th and Rojas quickly gets him home with a triple in to center. 6-0 Dbacks. That ends up being our only run, but once again, how can I complain?

6th Inning: “Put Capt Solo in the cargo hold”

Ok, wow, we’re now at 6 no hit innings for the rookie Gilbert. Did not expect this at all. Still 6-0 Dbacks going in to the bottom of the 6th.

Musgrove’s night is over for the Padres and it now falls to Strahm to keep things……interesting? Something like that.

An Ahmed double followed by a VanMeter single put that Padre hope to bed and we leave the 6th with a 7-0 lead. God I love this game.

7th Inning: “You may dispense with the pleasantries commander, I’m here to put you back on schedule.”

Gilbert is cruising, straight up cruising, and he’s making it look easy folks. Still throwing a no no through 7 innings. Masterful. Where was this type of pitching the last few months?????

No dice for us in 7th, but with Gilbert on fire what does that matter.

8th Inning “Now witness the power of this fully armed and operational battle station!”

Gilbert is God. Full stop. 8 no hit innings. Mother of God. [And three outs on THREE pitches]

No runs for us in the 8th…whatever.

9th Inning: “Unlimited….POWWWWEEERRRRR!!!”

Folks. We got a no no. A NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!

Drink hearty my Snakepitters. We’ve earned it.

Bells and whistles, by Jim

Just as the terrible season which was 2004, was lifted up by Randy Johnson’s perfect game, so the trauma which was 2021 will always be remembered as the year Tyler Gilbert threw a no-hitter. While they have become somewhat commonplace this year, Gilbert is only the fourth pitcher to do so in his first major league start. It has been almost 70 years since anyone accomplished that: the last was Bobo Holloman of the St. Louis Browns on May 6, 1953. Let’s hope Gilbert lasts a bit longer than Holloman, who only threw 65.1 innings in his entire major-league career! This was also the first no-hitter thrown by a Diamondback at Chase Field, which is amazing considering some of the great pitchers to have made their home here.

A meaningless game in August turned into one of the all-time highlights of franchise history, and the following people were in the Gameday Thread to see it. Augdogs, AzDbackfanInDc, GuruB, HeathKBar, Jack Sommers, Jim McLennan, Keegan Thompson, Makakilo, Michael McDermott, NikT77, Oldenschoole, Snacks&Dbacks, Snake_Bitten, Totally Not Blind Squirrel, but still I apologize, VW Beetle, edbigghead, gzimmerm, kilnborn, makattack71 and since_98. Comment of the night to Jack:

We’ll be following up with post-game audio shortly, but I want to get this up. The Diamondbacks will go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon. I think Ninja Turtles may be our new spirit animal.
