Diamondbacks Minor League Recap 5/12/21: Who hid the bats?

New, 8 comments

The Diamondbacks Minor League affiliates combined for an 0-2 record. Reno and Hillsboro were off for the day, while Visalia and Amarillo’s offenses were shut down in close losses.

Best Pitcher: Amarillo (AA) RHP Ryan Weiss - 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K
Best Hitter: Visalia (Low A) SS Sheng-Ping Chen - 1 for 3, BB, HR (1), RBI, R, 1 K

AA: Amarillo Sod Poodles 0, Wichita Wind Surge (MIN) 1

Ryan Weiss struck out 7 and walked 1 in 6 no-hit innings for Amarillo, but unfortunately it didn’t matter because the position players contributed very little at the plate. A Dominic Fletcher double and Geraldo Perdomo single were the only hits for the team to go alongside 3 walks. The pitching was good, as Matt Gage fired 2 scoreless innings to keep the game tied at no score through 8. Unfortunately Ryder Jones made a fielding error with a runner at first that put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs and a sacrifice fly would score the walk-off run.

CF Alek Thomas: 0 for 3, BB, 2 K
SS Geraldo Perdomo: 1 for 4, 1 K, CS
LF Jake McCarthy: 0 for 2, BB, HBP, SB
RF Dominic Fletcher: 1 for 4, 2B, 1 K

Low A: Visalia Rawhide 3, Fresno Grizzlies (COL) 5

Blake Walston made his second start of the year and was fantastic for Visalia. Walston allowed 6 hits, 0 walks, and struck out 7 in 6 innings of 2-run ball. Unfortunately, the lack of offensive and reliever support would hang with with a tough luck loss. Visalia’s offense did not get going until the 7th when Sheng-Ping Chen cranked out his first homer of the year to make it 2-1. The bullpen wasn’t good behind him, as they allowed 2 runs to score in the 7th and another in the 8th to put the game out of reach for the offense, who plated 2 runs courtesy of an Andy Yerzy double in the 8th to make it a 1-run game again.

LHP Blake Walston: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 7 K, L (0-1)
CF Wilderd Patiño: 0 for 4, BB, 2 K, R
