Roster moves

The Arizona Diamondbacks set their 2021 Opening Day roster with a series of transactions.

  • Recalled RHP Riley Smith from Triple-A Reno.
  • Placed RHP Zac Gallen on the 10-day injured list (right forearm hairline stress fracture of radial head) retroactive to March 29.
  • Placed OF Kole Calhoun on the 10-day injured list (right knee medial meniscus tear) retroactive to March 29.

Smith made six appearances for the D-backs in long relief last year, working 18.1 innings and allowing only three earned runs, for an ERA of 1.47. Spring was less kind to him as he game up five earned runs on nine hits over seven innings of work. But he did have nine strikeouts without walking a batter.

Opening Day Roster

  • Right-handed Pitchers (10) – Taylor Clarke (45), Stefan Crichton (58), Chris Devenski (32), Kevin Ginkel (37), Merrill Kelly (29), Yoan López (50), Riley Smith (46), Joakim Soria (48), Luke Weaver (24) and Taylor Widener (57).
  • Left-handed Pitchers (3) – Madison Bumgarner (40), Caleb Smith (31) and Alex Young (49).
  • Catchers (2) – Carson Kelly (18) and Stephen Vogt (21).
  • Position Players (11) – Nick Ahmed (13), Asdrúbal Cabrera (14), Eduardo Escobar (5), Tim Locastro (16), Wyatt Mathisen (27), Ketel Marte (4), David Peralta (6), Josh Rojas (10), Pavin Smith (26), Josh VanMeter (19) and Christian Walker (53).
  • Injured List (3) – Kole Calhoun (56), Tyler Clippard (36) and Zac Gallen (23).
  • Taxi Squad (5) – RHP Jeremy Beasley (59), LHP Joe Mantiply (35), RHP Matt Peacock (47), C Bryan Holaday (28), INF/OF Andrew Young (15).

Opening Day line-up

  1. Josh Rojas, SS
  2. Ketel Marte, CF
  3. Christian Walker, 1B
  4. David Peralta, LF
  5. Asdrubal Cabrera, 3B
  6. Eduardo Escobar, 2B
  7. Pavin Smith, RF
  8. Stephen Vogt, C
  9. Madison Bumgarner, P

No Nick Ahmed, but the team did not make a roster move with regard to him, which suggests they believe it will only be a couple of days before he is available again. Interesting to note Escobar playing second, with Cabrera at the hot corner. Also, Vogt gets the Opening Day start over Carson Kelly. That may simply be based on who MadBum wants to throw to; we’ll ask Torey about that later.
