How well did you remember the 2021 Diamondbacks?

If the Sporcles were anything to go by, the team will soon largely be forgotten. Especially the pitching.

Position players

54 people bravely stepped up to try and remember all 28 position players to don Sedona Red this year. The average score was about two-thirds, with 41% able to name twenty or more. A quarter of the players were correctly named by over 90% of participants, and it’s more or less the everyday players you would expect. Ketel Marte led the way, being missed just twice, with David Peralta and Carson Kelly just behind. Josh Rojas came more or less out of nowhere to join the pack, and a special mention to Daulton Varsho, who clearly made something of an impression in his first full season. Just missing out was Kole Calhoun - getting 89% recognition when you only appeared in 31% of the games is not bad.

A little surprised to see Eduardo Escobar sitting slightly lower: I guess his mid-season departure gave him more time than most to fade from memory. At the other end, I was also quite surprised that none of the position players came in below 25%. The lowest ranked was Jake Hager, who only played nine times. Admittedly, that was four more than Seth Beer, and that doesn’t appear to have affected his figure. At 77%, Beer obviously has good name recognition for some reason... But the bottom half-dozen all appeared in fewer than 25 games. Josh Reddick’s 40.7% was the lowest figure for anyone who played more often, and Tim Locastro also suffered from his early exit.

Pitchers

Who? Yeah, it was like that. This was a harder one, and only 39 people took up the challenge, with an average score of 44%. Yes, the majority of pitchers to have taken the mound for Arizona in 2021 are already forgotten, less than one month after the end of the season. While no position players scored less than 25%, almost an entire pitching roster - 11 different men - did so. Admittedly, one of those is probably my fault. I forgot to remove the funny ó from the name of Yoan López. This meant that you had to figure out how to type in López, and Lopez was not good enough. I want to give a shout-out to the two people who still managed to get him.

There was a generally strong correlation between workload and recognition. with the top three in innings, being Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly and Madison Bumgarner, who all achieved recognition over 90%. But that wasn’t always the case. Jake Faris threw more than either Tyler Clippard or Joakim Soria, but struggled to a 21.6% score, while they sat in the upper fifties. I am also quite impressed that as many as 43% of you were eventually able to figure out the spelling of ‘Bukauskas’. But as well as Lopez, only two of you were also able to remember Anthony Swarzak and Brandyn Sittinger, without any special characters. Or the need to remember it’s “Brandyn”...
