Today's Lineups

Tim Locastro - LF Mookie Betts - RF
Ketel Marte - 2B Corey Seager - SS
Christian Walker - 1B A.J. Pollock - DH
Eduardo Escobar - 3B Max Muncy - 1B
Kole Calhoun - RF Chris Taylor - CF

Andy Young - DH Enrique Hernandez - LF
Daulton Varsho - CF Edwin Rios - 3B
Carson Kelly - C Gavin Lux - 2B
Alex Young - LHP Julio Urias - LHP

It’s amazing to realize how quickly the team’s roster has been overhauled. Less than three years ago, here is the team’s 25-man squad which was announced for the wild-card game against the Rockies, along with where they are now.

Right-handed pitchers (7)

  • Zack Greinke (Astros)
  • Archie Bradley (Reds)
  • Zack Godley (Boston)
  • David Hernandez (Indians)
  • J.J. Hoover (free agent)
  • Fernando Rodney (Astros)
  • Braden Shipley (Royals)

Left-handed pitchers (3)

  • Andrew Chafin (Cubs)
  • Patrick Corbin (Nationals)
  • Jorge De La Rosa (free agent)

Catchers (3)

  • Chris Iannetta (retired)
  • Chris Herrmann (Giants)
  • Jeff Mathis (Rangers)

Infielders (7)

  • Paul Goldschmidt (Cardinals)
  • Brandon Drury (Blue Jays)
  • Ketel Marte (D-backs)
  • Jake Lamb (D-backs)
  • Daniel Descalso (Cubs)
  • Kristopher Negron (retired)
  • Adam Rosales (retired)

Outfielders (5)

  • J.D. Martinez (Red Sox)
  • A.J. Pollock (Dodgers)
  • David Peralta (D-backs)
  • Gregor Blanco (retired)
  • Rey Fuentes (free agent)

Quite the startling overturn, with only three of those men still anywhere in the organization. There are quite a few names there I would not have remembered or expected to be on the roster: Hoover, Fuentes and Negron are likely the players most likely to be missed on a future Sporcle quiz about it. Lamb’s days with the team are clearly numbered - many would say he should also have been on his way out the door, so it’ll just like the Freight Train and K-Marte with memories of D-backs postseason play. Hey, at least, thanks to the trade of Starling Marte, we don’t have to specify which Marte I’m talking about for the rest of the season. So, small comfort in that...

Pre-game audio from Nick Ahmed

During his 3 PM sit down with the media, Nick Ahmed expressed some strong opinions about the letter that Mike Hazen sent to Season Ticket Holders. Nick was asked about this specific passage: “We started this season with every expectation of making the playoffs so today is certainly disappointing. But we are well positioned to improve even further during the offseason and put a team on the field in 2021 that competes hard every day and makes you proud.” Let’s just say he was not pleased. Give it a listen:

Pre-game audio from Torey Lovullo

Asked about it during the pre-game presser, Torey said that he hadn’t seen Mike’s comments or had a chance to hear or speak with Nick about it. But he attested that Mike Hazen is always focused on winning baseball games. This is going to be a story for 24 hours though. Torey also spoke at length about the difficulty of saying goodbye to guys he’s known for a long time

  • Closer by committee: They will employ a closer by committee until somebody steps up. No designated closer at this point, and he’ll play the match-ups.
  • Caleb Smith in on the COVID IL and still getting built back up and needs to clear protocol before they can address when he will join the MLB club and what his role will be.
  • Madison Bumgarner is close. Will throw a bullpen on Wednesday. While he wouldn’t commit, it sounds like MB will be pitching this weekend
  • Daulton Varsho and Ketel Marte will start off rotating in Centerfield. Ketel already sat down with Torey and told him whatever it takes to help win he’s on board with. No issues for him returning to last year’s role of shuttling between CF and 2B
  • Taylor Widener was starting to move into more high leverage situations so losing him to injury complicates things for him somewhat. He believes it will be short stint on the IL.
