Arizona starters seem to have trouble staying healthy in Colorado. A day after Jon Duplantier was forced to make an early exit due to a tight hamstring, Zac Gallen joined him, leaving early due to stiffness/tightness in the back. Although, in Gallen’s case, exiting early due to minor discomfort might have been a blessing. Through 3 2⁄3 innings, the young up-and-coming star pitcher for the Diamondbacks gave up six runs, all of them earned. If he threw over the plate, the ball was pounded. If he didn’t the Rockies’ hitters showed enough patience to wait for their pitch.
Despite receiving a terrible start from Gallen, the game was in Colorado - against the woeful Rockies. This meant that when Gallen left the game early, the Snakes were only down by three. They got back one of those three in the fourth inning, making a game of things. That was at least, until James Sherfy and Steve Cishek soiled the bed. The two relievers combined to allow seven runs in only 1 1⁄3 innings. Those seven runs were the difference in the game. Eventually, Will Smith came in to finish off the game and send Arizona to the airport.
Final Score: AZ 6 - COL 13
The player of the game was old Arizona nemesis, Charlie Blackmon. Colorado’s right fielder was 3-for-3, including a home run. He drove in five runs and scored one.
The Diamondbacks are off tomorrow. On Friday, they will begin the final series before the break in Chicago, where they will take on the invigorated White Sox. This may even provide a chance for Cishek to face Starling Marte in a match-up of players swapped for each other.
Arizona will start Luke Weaver against Reynaldo Lopez.
