Let’s get ready to rumble !

Colorado Rockies v. Arizona Diamondbacks

D-BACKS ANNOUNCE 2020 OPENING DAY 30-MAN ROSTER AND TAXI SQUAD

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks set their 2020 Opening Day 30-man roster and 3-player taxi squad:

Right-handed Pitchers (11)Archie Bradley, Taylor Clarke, Stefan Crichton, Zac Gallen, Kevin Ginkel, Junior Guerra, Merrill Kelly, Yoan López, Hector Rondón, Luke Weaver and Taylor Widener;

Left-handed Pitchers (4)Madison Bumgarner, Andrew Chafin, Robbie Ray and Alex Young;

Catchers (2) – Carson Kelly and Stephen Vogt;

Infielders (8)Nick Ahmed, Kevin Cron, Eduardo Escobar, Jake Lamb, Ketel Marte, Josh Rojas, Ildemaro Vargas and Christian Walker;

Outfielders (5)Kole Calhoun, Jon Jay, Tim Locastro, Starling Marte and David Peralta;

Taxi Squad (3)John Hicks (C), Joe Mantiply (LHP) and Wyatt Mathisen (INF)

Notable: Despite getting knocked around by the Dodgers in the exhibition games in LA, the two Taylor’s, Clarke & Widener have made the opening day roster. That means that Joe Mantiply will be relegated to the Taxi Squad and there will be only two left handers in the bullpen in Andrew Chafin and Alex Young. No other surprises on the pitching staff

As expected, Daulton Varsho will be held back. He’ll at least have to wait a week or two before he gets a chance at the roster, thus delaying his service time clock and ensuring the Diamondbacks will control him for 6 seasons beyond 2020.

No surprises in the infield or outfield. Christian Walker and Kevin Cron have both been deemed healthy enough to be on the roster to open the season. We’ll have to see if either has a setback, or is perhaps relegated to DH and PH duties for the first few games.

In addition to Mantiply, the Taxi Squad who will travel with the team on the road must include a catcher, and that is John Hicks. Wyatt Mathisen is a versatile player who has played mostly 3b but has also seen time at 2b and 1b. He was drafted as a catcher and player that position for the Pirates organization in 2013, so could also conceivably be an emergency catcher if needed.

The Diamondbacks will open their season tomorrow in San Diego at 6:10 P.M. Arizona Time
