Arizona Diamondbacks May confidence poll

April results

Probably the most significant number here, is less the level of the confidence, than the number of people who could be bothered to vote. The 63 who took part was an all-time low, less than a quarter of the 253 who voted in the previous confidence poll, at the beginning of February. That makes sense. Indeed traffic across all of the SB Nation baseball sites was down 75% on the same period last year, so this drop would be in line with that. We’ve all got other things to do and, speaking for myself, baseball has largely not been on the radar at all.

For the first time in a while. we see a sharp uptick on 1’s: it hasn’t even been above 3% since last August. We leave the question, quite deliberately, open-ended, and it’s up to you to decide what “How confident are you about the Diamondbacks?” means. However, I don’t think I ever expected to be asking that question in the context of a global pandemic which has closed down all the major professional sports leagues in the United States.

Elsewhere most of the numbers did remain relatively static. Overall, there was a drop of about seven-tenths of a point, compared to the last poll from the far distant era of the pre-pandemic world (at the beginning of February, as we skipped March). Confidence at the start of April came in at an average of 6.48. Despite the lack of baseball, we’re going to keep on having these damn things. I think I am probably slightly more optimistic of there being some baseball played this year than I was a couple of weeks ago. What format and how that’ll shape up remains to be seen. But it’s hard to say if I feel more or less optimistic about the Diamondbacks. As mentioned, I don’t really feel very much “about the Diamondbacks” in any way at this point. They feel more of a theoretical construct than a real thing! But here’s the poll, so have at it.
