Eric Logenhagen from Fangraphs has published his first mock draft for the 2020 year. This mock only composes of the first round (1-29).
Here’s how it turned out for the Arizona Diamondbacks:
18. Nick Bitsko, RHP, Central Bucks East HS (PA)
There isn’t much of an explanation for why Logenhagen made the pick. Bitsko was one of two high school pitchers that made my ten players to watch for at the 18th pick. His stuff profiles for a ceiling of a #2 starter, relying on a plus fastball and curveball combination as his bread and butter while also showing a feel for a change-up. Bitsko has a clean and very repeatable delivery that features an overhead wind-up, which portends to projecting above-average command in the future.
Bitsko is somewhat risky gamble for teams, given that he’s reclassified to 2020, no 2020 game action, and trying to sign him out of a commitment from the University of Virginia. If he goes in the Top 20, I’d speculate his odds of going pro to be better than 95%. The overall profile is worth the risk, as even at his listed 6’4” 220 size there is room to add more weight and a tick or two to the fastball. Bitsko also fits the profile of pitchers that Mike Hazen has targeted, high spin rate 4SFB/CB combo for swings and misses and ground balls. The organization will have to do their homework on this guy in terms of projecting him for the future and seeing if they can sign him.
